Ward 6 Coronavirus Update, 3-14-2020 2
In case you don¡¯t get Charles Allen¡¯s updates. See below. Plus consider using this group list for any block specific needs or updates in the coming weeks. Stay well! Antonia -- As promised, I'm reaching back out with the latest information as the District takes steps to mitigate the spread and impact of coronavirus on our community. The actions and announcements over the last few days likely have many of us on edge and feeling anxious. During the coming week, our neighborhoods and city will feel different for each of us. Many of the decisions made have been hard to make and will require significant changes and sacrifices to your plans, family budget, and daily life. But each one of them is grounded in science and public health, and they are aimed not just at slowing the spread of COVID-19 but in saving lives. We will get through this -- don¡¯t let fear of the unknown overwhelm you. I¡¯ve already seen neighbors coming together, not through fear or panic, but with an urgent commitment to look after the family member, neighbor, or stranger who is more vulnerable than themself. We will need that spirit in the days and weeks to come, but I¡¯m proud of what I¡¯ve already seen on display. I won¡¯t pretend to have all of the answers yet either, but I am committed to providing leadership and information as we face this challenge together. That being said, apologies in advance for the length of this email... DCPS Announces Closures Beginning Monday, March 16 thru March 31 This is a big update I know many parents have been anxiously waiting to hear about. DCPS will be closed for students from March 16 through March 31. Here's how those days breakdown: DCPS will keep Monday, March 16 as a professional development day. Spring Break will move up from April to take place March 17-23. March 24-31 students will participate in distance learning. I know many Ward 6 families also have DC Public Charter School students. Each school will be making their own decisions, but the Mayor has urged every LEA to follow DCPS's schedule for simplicity. The DC Public Charter School Board is maintaining a running list of closures here. During the closure period, there will be daily meals for students served at multiple schools, including three in Ward 6. Jefferson Middle School (801 7th St., SW) Eastern High School (1700 East Capitol Street, NE) Walker-Jones Education Campus (1125 New Jersey Avenue, NW) Full list: https://dcps.dc.gov/coronavirus **These meals are available for ALL students, regardless of what school they attend. There is no need to present a student ID.** Finally, passing on this offer from Comcast that is offering two months free for the Internet Essentials service for low-income families, seniors, and veterans. Learn more here. Updates on Coronavirus Testing and Response Since my last note, a lot has changed as more and more organizations and government agencies have taken steps to either close or significantly reduce gatherings of people in order to slow the spread and flatten the curve. As it has been covered extensively in the news, the US is far behind in the availability of full test kits and processing, challenges that are beyond the control of the District or any other states largely, though the private market is quickly stepping in with testing. This means we have a lagging indicator of just how widespread the coronavirus is. In the coming days we will see the picture get more clear as more and more private labs get online and testing results speed up - as you see confirmed cases grow, know this is why we've taken so many steps to minimize spread through social distancing. The website https://coronavirus.dc.gov/page/coronavirus-data will continue to be the central site to follow for data updates. If you want to share information in your organization, community, or otherwise, the resources tab is helpful and has downloadabl

Have you completed the Eastern Market survey?
Hi Neighbors, If you care about the future of Eastern Market, please take a short survey that is part of developing Eastern Market¡¯s Strategic Plan. In September 2019, The District government contracted with architrave, p.c. , a Capitol Hill firm, to perform a study of the Market and to make recommendations for the way forward. This survey is part of their fact gathering phase for their study in order to gauge the present and future use of the Market. Survey closes on Feb 14: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/eastern-market-survey To learn more about their Eastern Market Strategic Plan, visit www.easternmarketplan.org, and sign up for notices about public meetings. https://easternmarket-dc.org/ Thanks, Maureen

christmas tree collection info 2
In case you weren't aware, DC collection of Christmas trees for composting isn't happening automatically this year (no idea why). You have to call 311 to schedule the pick up. I did it just now and it only takes a minute, so I'd encourage folks to do this so your tree doesn't just end up in the landfill. Call 311, then press 5, then press 2. The person who answers will take your name and address and tell you when the pick up will be in front of your home. Antonia Leaf and Holiday Tree Collection Leaf and Holiday Tree Collection Leaf and holiday tree collection season starts November 5, 2018. Find your home¡¯s collection dates. NEW! HOLIDAY TREE AND GREENERY COLLECTION: Holiday Trees and Greenery will be collected December 27 ¨C January 31. Residents in DPW-serviced households are asked to call 311 to make an appointment to schedule their tree and greenery collection for composting between December 27 - January 10. Trees and Greenery should be placed in front of residents¡¯ homes or taken to the drop off locations where they will be composted and made available to residents at no charge. Please remove all ornaments and lights and do not place trees and greenery in bags. If residents do not wish to participate in composting their holiday trees and greenery they can also be placed where your trash is normally collected. They will be picked up along with your trash as space in our trucks permits.

Heat pump 2
Dear neighbors, I'm in my third year of paying what I think is truly exorbitant amounts of money to heat about 1800 sq. ft. with a 12-year-old package unit electric heat pump (on my roof!). (The house, alas, does not have gas.) A recent part replacement has resulted in not much difference; according to Pepco, we're still using about 70% more electricity than "comparable homes"--and that's to keep the house at about only 67 degrees. Four different HVAC companies and five technicians have given me three opinions, mostly some sort of shoulder shrug. I'm trying to know whether the problem is OUR heat pump (and our uninsulated, drafty old house) or whether the problem is just "heat pump." So I'm wondering whether anyone else has a heat pump and whether it's really expensive to run in the winter. I know heat pumps are not ideal when it's colder than about, say, 40 degrees outside, and I know it's more expensive when it flips into "auxiliary heat," which it does on and off when it's colder than about 40 degrees outside. I'm debating whether to replace with a newer system, and/or supplement with mini-split units in the the two coldest rooms. Thanks for listening. Any enlightenment would be appreciated. Feel free to email me directly. Jessie on 11th St.

Want house-sitters over New Years?
Hi all We are having several friends in to celebrate New Years. While we can house some, there are more bodies coming than we have room for. If you're planning on being out of town around New Years Eve, and are interested in having someone look after your house, please let us know. All our guests are non-smokers, none would be bringing pets. The earliest folks would arrive on 12/30 and the last are leaving 1/1 or perhaps 1/2. Thanks. -Dan Kolker and Cara Spencer 224 10th

Yahoo block group shutting down soon
Hello neighbors, As many of you probably know yahoo is shutting down its yahoo group function in December (14?). I started this group around when Ian was born to stay connected with our block and alley neighbors. It¡¯s definitely been useful over the years and I¡¯ve appreciated having it. But it is barely used now and certainly for us less relevant for kid related things. So I¡¯m going to call it quits and not attempt to transfer it to a new listserve group platform. If anyone does have any interest in seeing the 200 11th st SE block group continue let me know and I can make you the manager before it¡¯s too late. I know that others have been transitioning their yahoo groups to other group platforms successfully. It¡¯s been a good run. Signing off. Antonia 219 11th street
