Info on upcoming neighborhood walk and update on latest incident at 3rd and NC Ave SE
All, Just want to provide you with information from my colleague, Ivan Frishberg, and CDR Hickson on another violent robbery last night. If you're interested in doing something proactive in response, please join me and several others for a neighborhood walk this Saturday night, from 9PM to 11PM. Acting on an idea from a neighbor, our theme for the walk will be, "Do your bit, keep it lit!" We'll be putting flyers on dark homes, encouraging them to turn on their porch lights. The walk will be coordinated with MPD. Rally at the corner of 13th & Independence. Stay safe, Brian ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ivan Frishberg (ANC) <ivanfrishberganc@...> Date: Tue, Sep 4, 2012 at 11:03 PM Subject: Fwd: incident at 3rd and NC Ave SE To: "Ivan Frishberg (ANC)" <ivanfrishberganc@...> Neighbors, Last night there was yet another assault in our neighborhood. Commander Hickson has a note below with the details. If there is anything we can do to assist MPD in solving some of these cases it would be extremely important. We are very fortunate that this case last night did not result in the same kind of injuries as in the TC Maslin case but it would have been quite possible based on the description of the assault I received. While we cannot and should not change the way we live in our own neighborhood, we have to be especially smart right now in avoiding riskier situations and following the prevention tips of MPD (see links in last email). Let's also be extra vigilant and observant in the weeks ahead as MPD works to solve these cases. Thanks. Ivan ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Hickson, Daniel (MPD) <daniel.hickson@...> Date: Tue, Sep 4, 2012 at 6:31 PM Subject: RE: incident at 3rd and NC Ave SE To: Ivan Frishberg ANC <ivanfrishberganc@...> At about 2:30 AM a resident was approached in the 300 block of North Carolina Ave SE by two suspects who displayed a handgun, assaulted and robbed him. The description provided by the victim was for two black males, both described as 20 years old, 5'4", 150 pounds wearing a white sleeveless shirt. Obviously, due to the time and location of the assault, investigators are exploring any connection to the Maslin case; however, as of the moment a direct correlation has not been established. If I do learn of anything further, and I am able to release the information, I will certainly pass it to you and the community. While I am disappointed with the robbery this morning, we have had a significant impact with our deployments to the area recently. We will keep after the issue and I will keep you advised the best I can, feel free to contact me anytime. Resolution supporting closure of the 300 block of 7th St during Hine construction
2
Neighbors, Attached please find a draft resolution ANC6B will consider this month (first at tomorrow night Planning and Zoning meeting, then at its full meeting on September 11th). The resolution supports closing the 300 block of 7th St on the weekends during Hine construction in order to preserve market capacity. This is a complicated issue, with many stakeholders, interests and leverage points; and an abundance of rhetoric and propaganda. My focus has been and will continue to be supporting the long-term, institutional sustainability of Eastern Market. This resolution is a small, but important component of that effort. More to follow in the coming days. Regards, Brian

FW: Community event - diaper drive
Neighbors, See below about a chance to help out the DC Diaper Bank and earn some discounts at three great local businesses this Saturday at Eastern Market. This is also an opportunity to highlight that Eastern Market reserves vending space for community philanthropic concerns--worth remembering the next time you are seeking support for a specific cause! Regards, Brian Second Annual Capitol Hill Diaper Drive September 8-22, 2012 The Second Annual Capitol Hill Diaper Drive to benefit the DC Diaper Bank starts Saturday, September 8. How do diapers make a difference? When a family cannot afford enough diapers, a baby may wear one diaper all day long, putting the child at risk of infection. Research has shown that the stress caused when a child wears a dirty diaper all day is a contributing factor to child abuse. The DC Diaper Bank collects diapers to provide to families in need in our community. Your donation will help babies and families in a simple, but essential, way. You can donate new or open packages of diapers. Please label open packs with the size and number of diapers. *The Diaper Bank is always in need of larger sizes (4 and up) and Pull Ups. The Diaper Bank also accepts formula, diaper wipes, and diaper cream. All those items must be unopened. The Diaper Bank will have a booth at Eastern Market on September 8 and 15 as part of the diaper drive. If you're interested in volunteering to staff the booth, please contact LBinDC@... Diapers can be dropped off, from September 8 to 22, at Metro Mutts (508 H St NE), the Playseum (545 8th St SE) or ShawaFel (1322 H St NE). Each of our fabulous sponsors is offering a reward for donating *a package of diapers*. ShawaFel, a terrific Lebanese restaurant, will give10% off a meal purchase. The Playseum, a wonderful children's activity center, will give a bubble bath-making activity including a bottle of bubble bath to take home ($3 value). Metro Mutts, a unique pet boutique, will give a 15% discount (excluding food and frontline) on a purchase. To learn more about the DC Diaper Bank, please go to www.dcdiaperbank.org. For more information about our generous sponsors, visit Metro Mutts (www.metromuttsdc.com), Playseum (http://www.playseum.com/), and ShawaFel (http://shawafeldc.com/).

Rats in Gessford Court Alleyway
2
Hello neighbors, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my wife and I spotted rats running around the Gessford Court alley this weekend. I'm calling the city today to see about the city's rat abatement program, and will report back what I learn. In the meantime, I strongly urge everyone to ensure they are NOT leaving food items out in their back patios, watch pets closely to ensure they are not eating rat droppings, and please clean up any weeds or grass around your backyard entryway so the rats have fewer places to hide. Please also make sure garbage is secure - I'm not sure what to do about this situation so please feel free to chime in if anyone has other suggestions. Mike 214 11th St SE

Update: Rats in Alley
2
We have filed a complaint with 311 and contacted the Department of Health Rodent Control unit per Brian Pate's recommendation. We also had Connor's Pest Control (Great guys, very helpful - highly recommend) come out to do a free consultation of our property to make sure we didn't have any nests or rat activity on our property. The gentleman who came for the consultation confirmed we don't have nests on our property and aren't doing anything that is adding to the problem. However, he noted some holes in the ground near our fence perimeter, which tell him the rats are burrowing underneath fences and traversing through people's backyards, as well as through the alley. He suggested other people in the neighborhood should call 311 and file a complaint to get the city out to bate traps in the alley and manage the problem. Additionally, he warned the rats are likely attracted to fruits or vegetables people may be growing in their backyards - so I only want people to be aware that they should be very careful if they grow and eat items from their gardens. He also suggested folks make sure they keep wood piles 18 inches off the ground and away from their houses, clean up unnecessary debris in their backyards and in the alley, and keep garbage and compost containers tightly secured. If you notice any holes around the perimeter of your fence, you should take the time to fill them in with mulch or dirt and tamp them down securely to close out the channel. I am sure everyone is as concerned about this problem as we are, so I encourage you to call 311 and file a request/ complaint with their rodent abatement program. You can also contact the Department of Health Rodent Unit as Mr. Pate recommended and speak with Doreen Broomfield at(202) 442-4754. Thanks in advance to everyone in the neighborhood for pitching in and helping to nip this problem in the bud! Mike

Subaru Forester
Hello folks. This is Paxton (222 11th street) and I was wondering if anyone in the group could help us out. Sara and I will be taking a trip to Australia this fall and we will be renting a car. The car rental will probably end up being a Subaru Forester. Normally it wouldn't be an issue but because I will be doing some of the driving I wanted to check out the leg room prior to getting over there. I have long legs and there aren't a lot of vehicles that are comfortable for me and not huge SUV's. Does anyone have a Subaru Forester I can just sit in to get a feel for it? My shanks thank you in advance. -- Paxton Wade Styles

H Street Festival today (9/15)
I'm sure most everyone is aware but in case not H sreet festival is today. Also, the NE library is having a big book sale before they close for their big renovation. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: elizabeth nelson To: Maury Sent: Saturday, September 15, 2012 7:58 AM Subject: [maury_elementary] H Street Festival today (9/15) This is short notice, I know, but if you're looking for a kid-friendly and cheap bit of fun close by, check out the H Street Festival. It will be set up today on the 800-1300 blocks of H St. from noon-6 p.m. There will be "art cars" (painted/decorated in beautiful or clever ways), the Baltimore Rock Opera - hard to describe but very entertaining and featuring the sort of costumes young folks would particularly enjoy, Smokey the Bear, children's craft activities (incl. the Capitol Hill Restorations Society booth which I will be manning just west of the 12th St. intersection), plenty of "swag", 4 stages with continuous live entertainment. There will be several food trucks and also porta-potties. If you drive, expect to park several blocks away. Walk or bike if you can. There will be places to chain you bikes but the closest ones may be taken. If you see a convenient lamppost a block of so away, I'd take advantage of it. While I'm thinking of it, Barracks Row Day is next Saturday 11 am - 5pm - similar scene but on a much smaller scale, though in years past, they've had a very nice petting zoo. --Elizabeth aka "Aunt Lizzie" _

AND a MOON BOUNCE! Re: HUGE Maury yard sale coming up! - Sept 29th
The Maury's Yard Sale, to be held TWO WEEKS from today on SAT., SEPT 29 from 9-2 is going to be featuring a moon bounce. We'll be holding the sale on the blacktop at Maury this year instead of the usual triangle park on North Carolina. If it rains, we'll move the sale (and the moonbounce!) inside. Plus there is the Maury playground for the kids to play in while you shop :). And a free parking lot so you can buy loads of great bargains with no worries of transporting it all home. Finally if you have stuff in decent shape that isn't too big you can leave it on my porch and i can transport it over there. Antonia 219 11th st SE.

Quick Updates

Neighbors, A couple of quick notes: Zoning Commission Hearing on Hine On Monday the Zoning Commission (ZC) gave preliminary approval to the Hine development on a 4-0 vote. They did ask the developer to do several things before granting final approval, some significant: a) they told the developer to accommodate any large trucks in the planned loading bay b) the developer is required to shift trash pick up for the North building from the east side of the building to the west side of the building and c) the developer is required to recalculate the floor area ratio (FAR--essentially the ratio of the total square footage of the building to the total square footage of the lot upon which it resides) without including the area of the newly reopened C St. Items a and b are good for the community and I'm glad to see the changes. Item C is a wild card, and I'm interested to see what the new FAR will be. Frankly we should have caught this during negotiations with the developers, and I don't think they should have presented a FAR calculation without making it clear that the street was incorporated in the denominator of the equation. Should the FAR exceed the amount allowable under the requested zoning regime (C2-B), I don't think it will derail the project, but it will merit further deliberation. The ZC will render its final decision in early October. Expansion of Performance Parking The Commission voted 10-0 to expand the Performance Parking Pilot to the full area allowed under existing law. We made one significant modification to the plan, which I believe will both eliminate the "dinner party" problem and accommodate the needs of Eastern Market merchants and patrons. One side of each street will retain the existing RPP hours (Mon-Fri, 7:00AM to 8:30PM, 2-hour visitor parking). I appreciate all of the feedback I received and especially the efforts of those who hosted block meetings. The comments, constructive criticism and ideas shaped the final form of the plan. It will take several months to implement new signage in the pilot area and I will continue to work with residents to ensure the plan is implemented consistently and effectively. Moonlight Movie in Lincoln Park Council Member Wells is sponsoring the 2nd of two movie nights in Lincoln Park this Saturday night. "Madagascar" will begin at dusk. My son and I enjoyed the first movie night, and hope to see even more families and friends at this one. Thank you Frager's Just a quick thanks to Frager's for providing Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) and lamp timers at cost in support of last week's "Do Your Bit, Keep it Lit" walk. If you had your porch light off and earned a flyer on your door step, take it to Frager's to receive a steep, steep discount on a new porch light and lamp timer. Hopefully you'll use them to illuminate your front door (every small action helps keep our neighborhood safe, right?). Making our Community Safer Meeting #2 On Tue, 9/18, from 7-9pm at Brent Elementary School, safety expert Samantha Nolan will give a presentation on how to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of any crime. MPD will also be present to give an update on recent burglaries (they recently made a significant arrest). This should be a more interactive and focussed meeting than the recent one featuring CM Wells and Chief Lanier. Fewer TV cameras = more productive. As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Regards, Brian

This Saturday
Hey folks. Looks like there is a counter protest going on for this Aryian Nation crap that's goin' on this Saturday. I'll be there for sure to calmly express my discontent with their views. Sara made me promise not to be in jail when all the smoke clears so as long that doesn't happen I should be good. Anyway, here's the info http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2012/09/aryan-nation-march-this-saturday-at-lincoln-park-counter-protest-also-organized/ Warning: I just looked at their website and I'm pretty heated. Quick updates
Neighbors, A few quick items: O&CS TF Meeting on Vacant & Blighted Properties The ANC6B Outreach & Constituent Services TF will be meeting tomorrow at 7PM at the Hill Center to continue research efforts on vacant and blighted property best practices. Our special guest is Kim Graziani, a subject matter expert on vacant and blighted property policy with the Center for Community Progress. Kim was the Director of Neighborhood Capacity Building in Pittsburgh and helped the City of New Orleans craft it's regulations on vacant and blighted property policy while with Community Progress. She'll be sharing her insights on how other jurisdictions deal with vacant and blighted properties. The O&CS TF is most interested in crafting recommendations that improve the process of classifying vacant and blighted properties and dealing with properties that, once identified, languish on vacant and blighted rolls. Hill Center Open HouseThe Hill Center hosts it 2nd annual open house this Saturday from 10:30 to 2:00PM. There will be performances by Step Afrika and other groups, as well as activities for children and adults alike. If you haven't yet had an opportunity to visit this great neighborhood resource, this is an excellent opportunity to do so. Maslin Case Arrests As posted by others, MPD has made 3 arrests of suspects in the brutal beating of TC Maslin. We should track this case as it proceeds, and, should the suspects prove to be guilty, be prepared to energize preparation of Community Impact Statements to influence sentencing. Closure of NE Library for Renovation, Opening of Rosedale Library and extended hours at the SE Library As many of you know, the NE Library was recently closed for extensive renovations. Below is the response from Anne Phelps, the Council's Staff Director for the Committee on Libraries, Parks, Recreation and Planning: " DCPL has added Tuesday and Thursday mornings to the Southeast Library schedule.
