Eastern Market Legislation
Neighbors, FYI for those interested in pending Eastern Market legislation. CM Wells is hosting a public meeting tomorrow evening from 6 to 8PM in the North Hall to discuss the bill. ANC6B will be hosting or co-hosting a listening session in the next two to three weeks. I'll let you know when it's scheduled. Best, Brian ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Allen, Charles (COUNCIL) <CAllen@...> Date: Tue, Oct 4, 2011 at 9:46 AM Subject: Eastern Market Legislation To: Brian Pate <patebc@...>, Ivan Frishberg <ivanfrishberg@...>, Ivan Frishberg <ivan@...>, "Pate, Brian [USA]" <pate_brian@...> Cc: "O'Brien, Linda (COUNCIL)" <LObrien@...> Gentlemen, Tommy introduced the Eastern Market legislation a few moments ago at the legislative meeting this morning. I¡¯ve attached a copy for you (as well as a summary). We¡¯ve also placed a summary and copy of the bill on our website so that people can download if they¡¯d like. Here¡¯s that link: http://www.tommywells.org/2011/10/tommy-introduce-1.php. The bill was referred to the Committee of the Whole, rather than the Committee on Government Operations as we had earlier discussed. The reason the Chair gave was that the COW has oversight of the Department of General Services (which is absorbing the Department of Real Estate Services; which manages Eastern Market currently). Update on Theft from Autos
3
Neighbors, At tonight's PSA 106 meeting, Lt. Fowler gave a good update on the rash of Theft From Auto events in the west Lincoln Park area (Independence Ave to East Cap between 8th and 11th St). MPD statistics show an unusually high number of Thefts from Auto in the past 30 days, but that these incidents may be shifting into PSA 107 (East of 13th St). Between 6 September and 5 October, there were 31 Thefts from Auto in PSA 106, which is significantly higher than normal. In the past 7 days, there were 3 Thefts from Auto in PSA 106. During the same 7 day period, PSA 107 reported 13 Thefts from Auto. It's too early to tell if this represents a permanent shift, but it tracks with information MPD has gathered that the primary person of interest resided in PSA 106, but may have recently left the PSA 106 area. Lt. Fowler reports that MPD is monitoring the person of interest. To deter and prevent further thefts, we'll be taking the following actions: * MPD encourages residents to keep their cars "clean", which means nothing visible on the inside. MPD is placing pink chits on cars with visible items inside to encourage owners to remove or hide their belongings. These are not tickets. Think of them as friendly reminders. * I'll be sending a note to the Department of Urban Forestry asking them to trim the trees along the 100 and 200 blocks of 11th St in order to improve the lighting. MPD will send a supporting e-mail. * There are two 311 trouble tickets in process with DDOT to fix the broken street lamp on the 100 block of 11th St. I'll be entering a 3rd and sending e-mails to city reps asking them to expedite the repair of this light. * Lt Fowler will be providing a description and/or picture of the primary person of interest, which I'll distribute upon receipt. * We'll schedule a series of additional walks over the next month, which MPD will support. Lastly, the officers of PSA 106 have offered to conduct "ride-alongs" with interested residents. I think it would be great if a few of us took them up on the offer. If nothing else, it improves our communication and coordination with MPD and increases our understanding of how these dedicated public servants patrol and perceive the neighborhood. Please let me know if you have and questions, concerns or ideas. Best, Brian

Free Trees Available to Pepco Customers
Dear Neighbors -- In the event you haven't learned of a pilot tree planting program called Energy-Saving Trees, I want to provide some information about it. Of the one thousand free trees made available through this joint program of Pepco and the Arbor Day Foundation to DC Pepco customers, approximately 875 trees are still available. Through November 12, 2011 (while supplies last), Pepco customers may reserve up to two free trees to plant this fall on their property at www.arborday.org/pepco. You may contact Zach Eden of the Arbor Day Foundation with any questions: zeden@..., 1-855-234-3801, or 1-888-448-7337. I've pasted Pepco's news release on the program below. Susan Eads Role 238 10th Street, SE _______________________________________________________________________ Pilot Program to Provide 3,000 Free Trees to Customers WASHINGTON ¨C Pepco, in cooperation with the Arbor Day Foundation, is providing 3,000 free trees to Pepco customers in the Washington, D.C., area. The cooperative effort launches the Arbor Day Foundation¡¯s pilot energy efficiency program called Energy-Saving Trees aimed at helping conserve energy through strategic tree planting. The trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with 1,000 trees reserved for District of Columbia customers, 1,000 trees for Montgomery County, Md., customers, and 1,000 trees for Prince George¡¯s County, Md., customers. Pepco customers can reserve up to two free trees at www.arborday.org/pepco from September 26 to November 12, 2011. The free-tree distribution is being handled through the Arbor Day Foundation. In return for the free trees, customers agree to plant them in a recommended location on their property and care for them. The planting location will be recommended based on its potential to create shade as the tree grows in height to reduce energy consumption. To ensure that customers are planting the right trees in the most strategic location, the Energy-Saving Trees program uses an online tool. Customers can map their houses, select a tree with energy-saving potential, learn the best energy-saving and safe locations to plant, and receive an estimate of the annual savings that may result when the tree grows. When a Pepco customer reserves trees, the two- to four-foot trees will be delivered directly to the customer for planting in the location identified online at the best time for planting this fall. Along with the estimated future energy savings, the online tool also provides estimates of other community benefits that trees provide, including air quality improvements, storm-water reduction, and carbon sequestration. ¡°Pepco is honored to cooperate with the Arbor Day Foundation to provide 3,000 free trees to our customers,¡± says Thomas Graham, President, Pepco Region. ¡°As a company that consistently has been recognized as a Tree Line USA utility by the Arbor Day Foundation for our quality tree care, annual worker training in quality tree care practices and our tree planting and public education program, we welcome the opportunity to provide power-line friendly trees that not only beautify our environment, but also provide the potential for our customers to save energy and money.¡± Customers are reminded to call 811 before they dig to avoid hitting underground utilities. About Energy-Saving Trees: Energy-Saving Trees is a new energy-efficiency program from the Arbor Day Foundation that expands their effort to work with utility companies across the nation. Currently the Arbor Day Foundation¡¯s Tree Line USA program recognizes 146 public and private utility companies that demonstrate practices that protect and enhance America¡¯s urban forests. Energy-Saving Trees provides utilities and communities with a turn-key energy-efficiency program using strategic tree planting around homes and buildings. Interested in a free cat?
Hi everyone, a friend went hiking in West Virginia and found a sweet little kitten. She couldn't leave it behind, because we all know, the poor little thing needs a mom. Her husband is allergic to cats so they can't keep it. We also have a cat already and no room for another. Feel free to contact Claudia at 202 547-8747 if you want the cat if not pass the word. Thank you! Elizabeth.

coats/snowsuits for Turkey
Hi all. My Turkish friend is traveling to Turkey on Friday and asked me if we have any old infant/toddler/small child snowsuits or coats that she can give to earthquake victims. Apparently there are enough adult clothes, but small children (who traditionally aren't taken outside much in the winter) are in need. If anyone has anything, please let me know. I'm gathering stuff up tomorrow/early Wednesday. Thanks, Katy katycarvt at gmail

Halloween Alley Party, Sunday Oct 30th!
5
Hi Everyone! So hope you all still remember that we are planning our first annual Alley Halloween party for next Sunday, October 30th. My thought was to start at 4pm since it gets dark earlier now. I figure it will go to about 6:30. I was fearful this would conflict with Hilloween but luckily that will be happening on Monday. So, here are my thoughts please others feel free to pitch in ideas too. Also, anyone able to show up a bit early to decorate and set up would be much appreciated as well. 1) This will be a potluck like our first alley party. Bring a dish and drinks for yourself and your kids. We will put out coolers. If you have a table you can bring out to put food on please do. We can put the food tables together pushed off to one side so folks can walk around and the kids can play. Also Maureen offered to have marshmallow roasting over their chimera. That would be fun. 2) I have some Halloween decorations I will put up and if others have decorations to spare please come a bit early and we can put them up to make it all more festive. 3) Kid activites: Definitely lets have the kids dress up in their costumes and we can plan to have a small parade around the block near the end, say ~6pm. Also I was thinking it would be fun to have several game stations. A friend of ours did this at a b-day party and it worked quite well. Say 4 games stations (dunking apples in a shallow pan, spider dart game (I have), throw 3 balls through a hoop, other ideas? The kids then mark off a card when they have completed a game successfully and when they have finished all stations they get a prize. I have a big bag of kid prizes that I can use for that. So, not too time intensive, simple and something fun for them to do. But I am totally open to other ideas. 4) Someone had suggested pumpkin carving, which sounds great, but I had this vision of lots of sharp knifes around small children and don't think that will actually work so well. But if there are any other ideas around pumpkins send them around. We can use our garage as a storage/organizing space. I will set up a database on our group website for folks to put in what dish and drinks they plan to bring and anything else. This can help us keep track so there isn't too much duplication. This will be lots of fun! Let's all collectively cross our fingers that we get decent weather. Hope lots of folks can make it and feel free to invite your neighbors too. cheers, Antonia

Update on Halloween, Pumpkins and Kids
So, it looks like we would be safe (email and db cross-ref, rounding up for a couple of extras) with 30 pumpkins? I seem to recall some on 11th Street with grandchildren, who came to the last gathering. Are they in the database? Does anyone on the West side of 11th want to hazard a guess on how many extras....? Thanks, Catherine

Tony the mail man petition?
13
Howdy neighbors - Dont' know if you all love and rely on Tony the mail man like I do, but you may have noticed he was assigned a different route. Saw him today and he's helping out on his new route... but isn't permanently assigned to 11th ST. Tony said someone had a petition going got get him back on our block. If so, I'd love to sign it and get help. If not, I'd love to start a movement to get him back. If anyone knows how to keep the best mail carrier we've had, please let me know! Tony rules!
