Walkers needed

Brian Pate

Neighbors,

I'm still looking for a few volunteers to walk tonight from 12-2AM. ?We'll be strolling the area between 8th and 11th St with East Cap as our focal point. ?Contact me at this address if you are interested and I'll give you the link up point. ?Coffee and cider will be provided!

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Unfortunatelly that is too late for me, however I am out walking dogs around 5:20 am weekdays along with another neighbor.? That should be helpful since some of the breakins occur around that time.

I am at the intersection of 11th and Independence.? My wife's car has been broken into twice over the last couple months.? Nothing in it except car seats for the kids and a Thomas the Train sticker book.? The second time was this morning at about 3:30 am (the first one was around 4:00 am a couple months ago).? The person tried again to pry off the frame around the rear passenger side window and ultimatly broke the glass setting off the alarm.? So looks like another $1K repair job.? While I was out talking to the police this morning, I notice that my neighbor's rear passenger window had also been smashed.? That same car AND his other Prius had been brooken into about two weeks ago (same window) some time between 6:00 and 6:30 am (between when I returned from walking dogs and left for work).? There was a third car also broken into that day.? Not sure why the 1100 block of Independence is a favorite.? Perhaps the sidewalk alley right behind our house that goes into Gessford Court or the alley accoss from us provide easy getaways.

So, the police know who is doing this and he has been locked up few times already.? His name is Nate Adams (need to verify, my mind was not operating at 100% at 3:30).? She said that police follow him around when they see him and arrest him when he does something.? He has been caught inside cars.? The officer also prevented a potential mugging by him.? As to why he keeps getting released, I am not sure.? I was going to see if I could check arrest records for Nate/Nathan/Nathaniel Adams.? The officer said there is a plain clothes walking the neighborhood at night and that I could write the commander to request more.? There has got to be more we can do.? He gets arrested, released, and then breaks into more cars.? I suspect in a month I will be going back to the shop to replace the window again.

?Hi Neighbors,

This is a great opportunity for me to send a rather belated message.? My apologies I didn't follow up the day after the walk.

Brian and a number of other neighbors walked around the neighborhood (in the rain, nonetheless!) last Saturday evening as planned.? We were lucky to have the company of one of the officers who patrols our area.? He spoke with us prior to heading out and pointed out a few things we can all be more conscious of.

Lighting, while there is a light out on 11th (we wrote it down and Brian is going to bring it to the attention of the proper authorities) we still noticed that there are quite a few dark areas around 11th street.? It was discussed that perhaps as a deterrent, we all might consider leaving our front and back lights on in the hopes that would increase viability and discourage these thefts.?

We also noticed a number of tree boxes that have large bushes growing in them.? The officer indicated? these can provide some cover for thieves to get in and out of our cars quickly and easily.? If you live near one, and have some time this weekend, consider trimming it back.? We're certainly not asking you cut down your bushes, but cleaning them up a bit might help?

Aside from that, we had a quiet walk.? There was also discussion about making walking a more regular event, as Brian said, increasing our presence will deter theirs.? Please let us know if you would be interested in joining us regularly to walk around so we can organize accordingly.

Best,
Meg

Danny,

I'm sorry to hear about your latest break-in. ?It's baffling why the perpetrator(s) are targeting this area. ?

If it is indeed this Nate Adams character, then one thing we can do is write community impact statements the next time he is arrested. ? Judges use the impact statements to help guide their sentencing decisions. ?

Another thing we can do is establish a digital Be On The Lookout (BOLO) list. ?I'll see if I can get photos of Nate Adams and the other chronic, repeat offender, Mr. Dent, and post them on these distribution lists. ?At least then we can all keep a watchful eye out for them.

The monthly PSA 106 meeting is tonight, 7PM, at Tyler elementary. ?Lt. Fowler should be present and would benefit from hearing about these incidents first hand.

Another reason for the darkness on 11th Street, SE?may be that?some of the?trees in sidewalk tree boxes are so big that branches may be limiting the effect of the street lights. I am not advocating cutting?our beautiful?trees down, but perhaps a light trim?to some of them, (like the tree in front of 206/208 11th street) might provide a bit more light on the street and sidewalks. I have contacted our council person, Tommy Wells, but haven't heard back from his office yet. Anyone have any idea how we could get?the trees trimmed on our block?

Trimming trees is not quick but I know the process for making the request as well as our ward 6 arborist who is great and you can call. I will get you that info. Antonia
