FW: Circulation of ANS-B19-219, the "Ward Redistricting Amendment Act of 2011"
Great news on redistricting! It looks like we are going to keep all of our people, Elliot-Hine and Eastern! I'm very proud of all of the effort people put in on behalf of our community and hope that we can translate this energy into continued economic, educational and civic progress and relationship building among our diverse population. Hopefully we'll also have some fun while doing it... Best, Brian P.S. -- Special thanks to Commissioners Brian Flahaven, Francis Campbell and Jared Critchfield. They worked tirelessly to mobilize people. And to Christine Mullins, Hazel Kraeder and many others who gave their time and energy to critique various aspects of the original plan. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Allen, Charles (COUNCIL) <CAllen@...> Date: Mon, Jun 6, 2011 at 3:18 PM Subject: FW: Circulation of ANS-B19-219, the "Ward Redistricting Amendment Act of 2011" To: "healy.adam@..." <healy.adam@...>, "ronneberg6a02@..." <ronneberg6a02@...>, "holmes6a3@..." <holmes6a3@...>, "alberti6a04@..." <alberti6a04@...>, "sharee.lawler@..." <sharee.lawler@...>, "AHysell@..." <AHysell@...>, "gmack01@..." <gmack01@...>, "lia.Veenendaal@..." <lia.Veenendaal@...>, "David6b01@..." <David6b01@...>, "ivanfrishberg@..." <ivanfrishberg@...>, "Norman6b03@..." <Norman6b03@...>, "Kirsten6b04@..." <Kirsten6b04@...>, "patebc@..." <patebc@...>, "critchfieldaj@..." <critchfieldaj@...>, "Carol6b07@..." <Carol6b07@...>, "neilglick@..." <neilglick@...>, "flahaven4Anc@..." <flahaven4Anc@...>, "Francis6b10@..." <Francis6b10@...>, "silverk1@..." <silverk1@...>, "mdixon402@..." <mdixon402@...>, "anne.phelps@..." <anne.phelps@...>, "richardsonmarvin@..." <richardsonmarvin@...>, "tom_hamilton@..." <tom_hamilton@...>, "billcrews@..." <billcrews@...>, "kwirt@..." <kwirt@...>, "kwilsey@..." <kwilsey@...>, "bobc4dcsw@..." <bobc4dcsw@...>, "cara.shockley@..." <cara.shockley@...>, "ron_mcbee@..." <ron_mcbee@...>, "alitsky@..." <alitsky@...>, "rlmoff@..." <rlmoff@...>, "misrhonda@..." <misrhonda@...>, "dggarber@..." <dggarber@...> Cc: "Mitchell, Naomi (COUNCIL)" <NMitchell@...>, "wellsthos@..." <wellsthos@...> Commissioners, Attached is the ¡°new¡± map for Ward 6 ¨C see ¡°Plan 6 (2).pdf¡±. Eastern Market Metro Community Association
Neighbors -- I recently learned of a community group you may want to consider joining, if you don't already belong: the Eastern Market Metro Community Association (EMMCA). There's no membership fee, and the group is active on matters affecting the community in the vicinity of the Eastern Market Metro Station, including the Hine School redevelopment project and the Hill Center. To learn more about the group, please go to http://emmcablog.org/about. To join, please select the "EMMCA Members" link, and include your street address to qualify for membership. The weekly e-mail update pasted below is an example of the information provided by the EMMCA. Thanks! Susan Eads Role 219 10th Street, SE _________________________________________________________________________ From: EMMCA@... <EMMCA@...> Subject: [EMMCA] Digest Number 311 To: EMMCA@... Date: Friday, July 8, 2011, 3:23 AM Hine - Hill Center - ANC Posted by: "Barbara Riehle" Barbara@... barbarariehle Fri Jul 8, 2011 12:13 am (PDT) Dear Neighbors Hine Last week, the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) approved Stanton-Eastbanc' s conceptual designs for two of the four buildings planned for the Hine site. (The tall office building at Pennsylvania and 7th Street and the residential building that stretches from D to C along 8th Street.) HPRB's approval was disappointing but not unexpected. What was unexpected was the number of folks the developer turned out to support the project. During months of public meetings on Hine, supporters of the project have been pretty quiet. That was not the case at the HPRB hearing last week. Later this month, both ANC6B and HPRB will review the remaining two buildings as well as the Plaza for the weekend Flea Market. Revised plans will be submitted to HPRB on July 18 (and hopefully available on the developer's website, hineschool.com) and an ANC Special Call meeting on the plans is expected the next week. A 3D scale model will be displayed, but I have no details on where it will be located. The conceptual design phase is the first step in what is expected to be a pretty long process. Personally, I had hoped greater improvements in the designs would be achieved during this early phase, but the critical negotiating begins this Fall during the Planned Unit Development (PUD) process. At that point, the stakes are high and serious community engagement and coordination will be key. Hill Center Nearby neighbors of the Hill Center filed a formal protest with the City's alcoholic beverage regulatory body, ABRA, Tuesday. The protest triggers a hearing on July 18. The Hill Center applied for the maximum the law allows for a liquor license in terms of operating hours, capacity, and live entertainment. Neither the Hill Center nor ANC6b saw fit to meet with nearby neighbors about the application. I can't help wondering why Commissioner Kirsten Oldenburg, who represents the Hill Center area, didn't facilitate such a meeting. Doing so would have saved the Hill Center, the neighbors, the ANC, and ABRA a lot of time and effort, not to mention sore feelings. ANC During last week's HPRB hearing on Hine, Dave Garrison (ANC6B01 Commissioner) offered testimony for himself and cohorts, Commissioners Norm Metzger and Kirsten Oldenburg, saying that enough attention had been paid to nearby neighbors and calling for retail from 7th to 8th along D Street. Garrison falsely claims this would be historically compatible, seeming to forget this has been the site of a school since Civil War times. Here's what they said, "Similarly, we urge that the Board support design decisions for the D Street and Pennsylvania Avenue buildings that emphasize the provision of street level retail for this entire block face from 7th to 8th Street. Such street level retail is entirely appropriate and historically- compatible for Capitol Hill, a community that once had literally hundreds of corner businesses throughout its residential blocks. In addition, retail along the D Street portion will help draw pedestrians from 8th Street south of the Metro plaza and better connect the new Hine devel

You can find which ANC 6B District you are in here: http://anc6b.org/map.html. A friend is looking to rent a parking space, short term
Hi all- A friend of mine is likely moving to the neighborhood (8th and Independence) on a short-term basis. He will be here roughly mid-August through mid-October. He is just returning from an overseas stint with the state department. His car is registered out of state so he will be looking for somewhere to park it. Does anyone have, or know of, a place he would be able to rent to park for about 2 months? Thanks/ Dan Kolker 224 10th.

Carjacking alert
I'm forwarding the alert below that was posted on MOTH . This carjacking happened yesterday nearby. Below is the description of events. "Just want to remind you all to be extra vigilant out there. Today, at 4:30pm, i was physically assaulted and had my purse and car stolen by an unarmed (thankfully) assailant. It happened at the corner of 13th and North Carolina, NE. The good news is that some neighbors heard my screaming and phoned police. MPD did a brilliant job of pursuing the creep, apprehending him, and returning all of my things. The assailant apparently watched me exit my car and lock it. He just followed me, jumped me from behind, threw me to the ground and fought for my keys and purse. So please be super aware that you could be being watched as you exit your car. stay safe!"

random car parked in our driveway
Hi all. Our nanny emailed and said that there is a random car parked in our (under the porch) parking spot and it has been all day. She took photos of the car and the license, but I think at this point in the day, we might want to have it towed. By chance are any of you expecting visitors that may have accidentally parked in the wrong spot? Thanks, Katy 249 11th

SMD05 Irene Damage Assessment
Neighbors, I did a quick survey this morning and prepared the attached assessment to aid the city's clean up efforts. Please let me know if I've missed anything. My biggest concern right now is the VERY large branch dangling precariously from a tree at 9th and N. Carolina. Otherwise, it appears we were pretty fortunate. Best, Brian

DPW debris disposal instructions.
Passing this along from the Lincoln Park list serve. FYI, the latest from DPW re: storm debris: NEWS RELEASE NEWS RELEASE NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Linda Grant Monday, August 29, 2011 202.497.1080/cell DPW TO COLLECT TREE DEBRIS FROM TREEBOX AUG. 29-SEPT. 2 ONLY For this week only, DPW will collect bundled branches from the space in front of residences. (Washington, DC) The DC Department of Public Works announced today how the Department will assist residents who are cleaning up after Hurricane Irene. 1. If hiring a tree specialist or landscaping company to cut up fallen trees and limbs, please have your contractor remove all the debris, limbs and branches. 2. From Aug. 29-Sept. 2 only, the Department of Public Works will remove from the treebox space(s) in front of residents¡¯ homes, branches that are cut into 4' lengths and tied into bundles no more than 2' in diameter. After Sept. 2, these items can be placed where the resident¡¯s trash is collected. 3. Halloween alley party anyone?
8
I have been inspired by our alley pumpkin, which the squirrels seem to have taken a shine to as well recently. Halloween is on a Monday this year. So, I thought it would be fun to have a Halloween alley party on Sunday, October 30th, say starting ~4pm, with fun Halloween kid games and food and drink of course. Plus the kids can dress up in their costumes and we could have a little parade around the block. What think you all? antonia
