16 December Security Walk and Burglary Prevention Tips from MPD

Brian Pate

Neighbors,

We'll be conducting a pre-holiday walk on Friday, 16 December, from 9PM to 11PM. ?Please contact me or Meg Krause (mkrause@...) if you're interested in walking.

I am also passing along Burglary Prevention tips recently posted on the MPD-1 list serve.

Regards,

Brian

Burglary Prevention Tips

* Keep all doors and windows closed and securely fastened. An open window or door is an open invitation for burglars. Thieves are also quick to spot weak locks that may be easily forced open. Doors should have deadbolt locks with a one inch throw and reinforced strike plate with three inch screws. All windows should have window locks.

* Secure sliding glass doors. Place a metal rod or piece of plywood in the track and install vertical bolts. These will help prevent burglars from forcing the door open or lifting it off the track.

* Always lock the door to an attached garage. Don't rely on your automatic garage door opener for security.

* Create the illusion that you are home by using timers on lights, radios and TV's. Making your residence appear occupied, even when no one is home, will deter criminals.

* Keep the perimeter of your home well lighted. Installing low voltage outdoor lighting is a cost-effective way to discourage intruders, as well as highlight a house. These should be supplements by bright motion-sensitive lighting.

* Never leave clues that you are away on a trip. Have a trusted neighbor collect mail and newspapers while you are away so delivered items do not accumulate. You can also ask a neighbor to park in your driveway or parking place to make it appear that you are present.

* Keep some shades and blinds up and curtains open to maintain a normal, everyday appearance in your residence.

* Never leave a message on your telephone answering machine telling people that you are away from home. A message that you will return at a certain time leaves your home vulnerable in the interim.

* Keep shrubbery trimmed away from entrances and walkways. While large, ornate hedges may be beautiful, they also provide a hiding place for burglars who need only a minute to break in through a window or door.

Our number 1 tip is to always lock your doors and windows. I'm sure that some think that it is silly to remind folks to lock their doors, but you may be surprised how many unlocked homes are burglarized. During the holiday season we also need to be aware of advertising to potential thieves what items you may have received as gifts. Be mindful of how you dispose of boxes for computers, televisions and video game systems.
The First District also has officers who have experience in conducting home security surveys. If you would like an officer to conduct a survey and assessment of your home, contact your PSA lieutenant.

Capitol Hill East Task Force Meeting Agenda

Brian Pate

Neighbors,

Forwarding this notice as I know several of you are interested in Hill East issues. ? Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the geographic distinction, considering that when I walk across the street, I'm technically in "Hill East"!

This meeting will focus on potential uses for the Eastern Branch Boys and Girls Club. ?My sense is that there is some credible movement on rejuvenating the space, which is exciting.

Regards,

Brian

A few more logistics.? The storage space is unheated and we will be inside and outside.? Please dress appropriately.? You probably want to bring gloves and a hat.? Emily, will you have any additional space in your car?? Sara has a few items to donate but I have a house full of donations already so our car will likely be full.? If not, Sara, you can leave them at our house and we'll drive them over some other time.? Please reply all since I may not be able to check back in until tomorrow.?
Catherine, see below for address.? If any of you want to caravan over, please meet in front of our house at 8:45am and if you can think of it, please txt me to let? me know - 703-864-9014.
?
Also, if any of you can think of people to help us, that would be very helpful.? We really need a crew of atleast 10 to 15?but so far I'm coming up empty handed.
Thank you all!!!!

Hi Folks,
We had a great weekend on the Hill with many donations made (especially on Sunday) and this week, we are holding a drive at Yu Ying and have received a ton of items!? This is all great news.? Now we need help sorting through all of our donations prior to the next drive on the 3rd and 4th in Alexandria.? I had initially thought I could plan for this at our house, but given the number of goods collected, I think it's best to have a sorting team / party (yes, there will be doughnuts and coffee if that will entice you out to our lovely storage unit) over the weekend.? We have rented a space in Cheverly MD which is about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the Hill.? Our space is a drive up space and opens out to a large (and seemingly empty) parking lot.? Although not necessarily a child friendly event, I could envision kdis hanging out in the parking lot and playing with some of our donated toys as we sort through boxes and bags of donations.? There is very little traffic at this location.?
?
You all have expressed an interest in volunteering (in some cases a second time) and so I'd like to propose either meeting on Saturday or Sunday for +/- 4 hours.? I'm free both days up until about 3:30 or 4pm, and if I can get 4 (or more) of you to help me on one of those days, I think we can knock out a good chunk of work.
?
Thanks in advance,
Lisa

Dear neighbors and friends,

?

Some of you may already know that my family and I will be moving to Paris by mid December for 2-3 years. We own a beautiful siamese/tortashell 12 year old cat, and we are looking to find a suitable home for her.?

?

Cocoa has been part of our family for 6 years, and is very affectionate around children and adults. She likes nothing better than to cuddle up next to you on the couch and on the whole is a very loving pet. We have started the ball rolling to have her fly with us and if we do not find a good home for her we will off course be taking her with us, but we are concerned that the travel and transition to a much smaller home in Paris will have an impact on her.

Please let me know if there is any interest - I am happy to email photos if need be.

SMD 05 Infrastructure Issues and Projects Punch List

Brian Pate

Neighbors,

I'm happy to report that last Thursday the city repaired several sidewalk issues on the west side of the 100 block of Kentucky Ave. ?I've linked to a??of additional issues and projects in the Single Member District (SMD).

After surveying many of these issues with representatives from the Department of Transportation (DDOT), Department of Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) and the Mayor's office, many are now "on their radar". However, we'll need to collectively apply pressure and collaborate with the city to craft answers to a number of the longer term issues, such as permanent alley resurfacing. I also need the help of neighbors--I need folks to take ownership of these issues and assist with driving solutions.

As always, let me know of any other issues of concern, and don't hesitate to provide feedback on the issues I'm tracking. ?

Regards,

Brian
