Re: Why has our alley turned into a parking lot??

Antonia,

As you may know, we have been renovating our house since the summer.? We are in temporary housing around the corner on 12th St, SE, and have not been there on a regular basis to know who all of the construction vehicles belong to.? Our main contractor parks on the street with our visitor's parking pass. I understand when some of the subcontractors are doing work on our property, they park behind our carriage house.? I believe they are always respectful of the neighbors and they have even helped to hang the Children at Play signs in the alley (thanks to Martha for organizing that effort!).?

That said, I know exactly what you mean about the parking lot, there are so many projects happening at the same time.? The good news on our end is that we are wrapping up our project soon!??? ??

A Petition to Name Our Alley -- Becoming a Part of History!

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Our names are Haley and Corey, and we are the new owners of alley house 210-REAR. We moved in a couple months ago and have since learned quite a lot about being the owners of a historic alley home. The most amazing thing we learned, however, was that we (as a block) have the opportunity to name our alley! Because there are a couple independent homes (210-REAR and 211-REAR) whose primary access is through the alley, we are able to petition the city to give our alley a name.* Not only would this be an amazing chance to cement our alley in D.C. history but also offer some practical benefits such as traffic control signs, GPS-discoverable/USPS-deliverable mailing addresses for all the alley homes, and increased property values.

In pursuit of this opportunity, we reached out to our ANC Steve Holtzmann who kindly provided us a run-down of the actions we would have to take in order to gain his endorsement for this initiative:

Step 1: Assess people’s interest in naming the alley.

Step 2: Attempt to reach all property owners to notify them of this initiative.

Step 3: Put together a petition that is signed by a majority of property owners whose property abuts the alley. (There are 64 properties but 62 homeowners, so as of today, we would need 32 or more signatures.)

After these steps are taken, the petition would go through various stages of procedural voting and eventually reach the Mayor for a final sign-off.** There are a couple fine-print details that we’re still working out with Steve, but for the most part, that’s it -- in a couple months, a signature on a petition is the only requirement we will need from you.

However, to really forge ahead, we need your support. As we mentioned above, Step 1 is a general assessment of interest. Therefore, we’ve created a Facebook Group for this Name Our Alley initiative: . Please join the Facebook Group if you are yea for a name! Or, feel free to call or text me at 678-523-4050, email me at haley.huang.0329@..., or respond to this thread to express your interest, convey your concerns, ask any questions, or offer your expertise. And of course, please spread the word! Although we will be doing our best to reach out to as many people as we can through emails, letters, and social media, we can only do so much on our own. Once we've established that there is significant interest in this initiative, we will move on to Step 2.

We understand that we’re still in the middle of a pandemic and therefore haven’t had the chance to meet everyone face-to-face, but we still hope that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to name a historical D.C. alley resonates with you as much as it does with us!

Thank you all for your time.

Sincerely,

Haley & Corey

COVID-19 Vaccine Updates

January 16, 2021

COVID-19 Vaccine

This morning, there were technical issues with the vaccinate.dc.gov portal that affected those trying to make an appointment online as well as through the call center.

Those technical issues have now been resolved and the portal is now working.

We understand the frustration this caused for those who are trying to make an appointment, and we appreciate your patience as we work to get Washingtonians across all eight wards vaccinated.

Appointments are now available for District residents who are 65 years of age and older and/or health care workers and who live in Wards 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8. You can register for an appointment at vaccinate.dc.gov or by calling the District’s hotline at 855-363-0333, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 7pm and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm.

On Monday, January 18, at 9:00 a.m., an additional 1,436 appointments will become available to any DC resident who is 65 and older or any individual who works in a health care setting in DC.

If you previously attempted to get an appointment and you did not receive a notification with a confirmation code, date and location, you must re-register. Demand for the vaccine is high, and we anticipate longer than usual waits through the Call Center. Sent from my iPhone Get important updates on the 59th Presidential Inauguration from DC Government. Subject: Re Mayor Bowser's Monday presentation related to (1) the public security preparations for this week and (2) next steps on vaccine distribution

Neighbors,

Please find below links to Mayor Bowser's presentation yesterday followed by a summary of the key points along with some observations.?The written presentation is 18 pages long including .7 pages on the Vaccine and 7 pages on Public Safety preparations. The YouTube link, for those inclined, is about an hour, (13 minutes of presentation and the rest Q&A with local journalists).

?In addition to giving a situational update on COVID in DC, the Mayor provided some important information on the status and next steps in the vaccine process as well as some details regarding DC public security planning related to the vote certification by Congress on Wednesday.?

Re the anticipated first amendment demonstrations, an emergency operations center was set up Monday morning. As of Tuesday morning, DC National Guard have been deployed to assist police with crowd management and traffic control. The Mayor's presentation includes maps of Street closures, parking restrictions as well as a reiteration of DC laws regarding carrying of firearms and details of other preparations. She did note that DC had decided not to attempt to enforce mask requirements among demonstrators.?

Mayor Bowser has requested that all DC residents exercise caution and avoid downtown areas today and on Wednesday. There is obviously no certainty as to what is going to happen in the next few days.It may blow over. It may not.? There is also no guarantee that whatever does happen remains solely in the downtown area. Some residents have already reported some incidents occurring nearby in the last day or two. So, wherever you are,? "an abundance of caution" is the rule for the next few days.

Regarding next steps on vaccine distribution to residents, the Mayor noted that?the first phase (phase 1A) of vaccination has focused on frontline healthcare workers as well as people living in congregate settings.. In response to questions, it was stressed that DC's policy has been to make vaccine doses available to residents as well as to people employed in DC as frontline essential workers, regardless of where their residence is. Given that the majority of those working in healthcare and other key areas are not DC residents, this decision, though superficially awkward, is hard to challenge. The policy also applies to the workers in the categories below. The next three categories of workers/residents and the "target dates" where those in these categories can begin the vaccination process were noted as follows:

Week of January 11: DC residents who are 65 years old and older?
Week of January 25: Specific categories of essential workers, including public safety workers, grocery store workers, workers in PreK-12 educational
settings and childcare settings
Week of February 1: DC residents with chronic medical conditions and other?essential workers

This is all great news. At the same time, it's important to stress here that we all need to have realistic expectations as to when each of us can expect to receive one of the vaccines. The dates listed above are solely dates when those falling into these categories will be eligible to register to receive a vaccine through the DC online portal.??? ?You're not going to be vaccinated on that day and it seems very unlikely that you will get a date for vaccination on that date. It only means that you will be permitted to register, answer some questions and provide contact information. You are not even likely to know what provider/location would give you the vaccine.?

Keep in mind that about 85,000 individuals were eligible for the vaccine in phase one A. Only a little over 20% have received the first of two doses of one of the two vaccines so far. There are over 300,000 people in the Jan 11, Jan 25 an Feb 1 groups listed above. It's going to take some time.

There are a lot of variables here. Some can be planned for. Some, not so much. Whether DC gets its supplies of vaccine doses as planned. Whether they come late. Whether they get less doses than anticipated at a certain time (or more). Whether other new vaccines become approved and available and what their schedule of doses and storage requirements are like. What, if any, impact the emergence of the UK COVID strain will have on vaccination strategies.? And the nuts and bolts of the delivery system and the capabilities/capacities of implementing partners giving the vaccines could, and (probably will) have glitches. The categories set by DC for prioritization could also shift/expand/contract based on any of this. Just think back to theCOVID testing capacities/criteria/strategies and how these shifted based on supply, demand, and other factors . The point is, it would be naive to think that this is not likely to be a road with bumps and detours along the way. But it is a road, and it is taking us somewhere.

Forgive me if I take the analogy a little bit further.? While we're all on this road we still need to wear our seat belts. We're all going to be wearing masks, social distancing, practicing good hygiene and being "careful" at least until next Fall and maybe for a good bit longer. The spread of the new strain may potentially make all of this even more important than it is already. And, even if some get the vaccines early on, while they may be protected from severe illness, there seems to be a possibility that they could still transmit the virus to others.

?I don't even know what to say about the other costs, in livelihood, lost opportunities, education and in basic survival that many have disproportionately faced and will continue to face. Except to say it's not going away and for lots of people, it's going to get worse and that we all need to find ways to take responsibility and share the load in any way we can.?

best,

?Steve

Steve Holtzman, 6B05

Postscript: For everyone who is not a health worker but still jumped into the "VaccinateDC" site and registered :? IIt bears noting here that in the past week, an indeterminate but probably large number of people in our city, regardless of whether they were eligible for phase 1A vaccine receipt, heard about the link, clicked on it and decided to fill out the registration questionnaire. The link was available in some online articles. Some of our local listservs had it posted. And it wasn't that difficult to just search and find it on the DC Health site. The site was explicit that it was only accepting registration from health workers right now. And the questionnaire was clearly designed initially only for that group. It didn't, for example, ask?questions about chronic medical conditions or occupation both of which are key factors in determining whether anyone is slated to get the vaccine in the next phases. ?But, the problem is that it still let anybody else access the registration, fill it out and submit it. I just checked. It still allows this. The fairly explicit request of the Mayor yesterday was that people who don't fit the current eligibility criteria should not register right now. It may be potentially slowing down the system. The questionnaire will be modified before the next phase so that it is structured appropriately for the next categories of those registering. For those who haven't registered but are still considering doing it regardless of guidance, the request is to please? be patient and wait.

?Still, it's understandable many of us did this. Personally, I wish the system had been set up to simply bump us all out if we answered "no" to the question of whether we were a health worker or not. It didn't. It doesn't.? The question is what the status of any of those registrations is right now. Are those registrations recorded and will just be supplemented with follow-up questions?or did they go into the ether? I posed the question to the Mayor's office yesterday in an email. (i.e., whether these registrations/completed questionnaires remain in the system or whether residents will need to edit or submit a new registration)? When I get a response back, I'll let you know.

Get on the DC vaccine list

In case you haven’t seen this. My take is they are working to identify those who?are most vulnerable. But it seems like you can generally?get on the vaccine list, even if far down in priority. Check it out.

?If you live in DC proper, you can now sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine. Signing up includes a short questionnaire that will help determine your access timeline.
