Free Trees Available to Pepco Customers
Dear Neighbors -- In the event you haven't learned of a pilot tree planting program called Energy-Saving Trees, I want to provide some information about it.? Of the one thousand free trees made available through this joint program of Pepco and the Arbor Day Foundation to DC Pepco customers, approximately 875 trees are still available.? Through November 12, 2011 (while supplies last), Pepco customers may reserve up to two free trees to plant this fall on their property at www.arborday.org/pepco.
You may contact Zach Eden of the Arbor Day Foundation with any questions:? zeden@..., 1-855-234-3801, or 1-888-448-7337.? I've pasted Pepco's news release on the program below.
Susan Eads Role 238 10th Street, SE
_______________________________________________________________________
Pilot Program to Provide 3,000 Free Trees to Customers
WASHINGTON ¨C Pepco, in cooperation with the Arbor Day Foundation, is providing 3,000 free trees to Pepco customers in the Washington, D.C., area. The cooperative effort launches the Arbor Day Foundation¡¯s pilot energy efficiency program called Energy-Saving Trees aimed at helping conserve energy through strategic tree planting.
The trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with 1,000 trees reserved for District of Columbia customers, 1,000 trees for Montgomery County, Md., customers, and 1,000 trees for Prince George¡¯s County, Md., customers.
Pepco customers can reserve up to two free trees at www.arborday.org/pepco from September 26 to November 12, 2011. The free-tree distribution is being handled through the Arbor Day Foundation. In return for the free trees, customers agree to plant them in a recommended location on their property and care for them. The planting location will be recommended based on its potential to create shade as the tree grows in height to reduce energy consumption.
To ensure that customers are planting the right trees in the most strategic location, the Energy-Saving Trees program uses an online tool. Customers can map their houses, select a tree with energy-saving potential, learn the best energy-saving and safe locations to plant, and receive an estimate of the annual savings that may result when the tree grows. When a Pepco customer reserves trees, the two- to four-foot trees will be delivered directly to the customer for planting in the location identified online at the best time for planting this fall.
Along with the estimated future energy savings, the online tool also provides estimates of other community benefits that trees provide, including air quality improvements, storm-water reduction, and carbon sequestration.
¡°Pepco is honored to cooperate with the Arbor Day Foundation to provide 3,000 free trees to our customers,¡± says Thomas Graham, President, Pepco Region. ¡°As a company that consistently has been recognized as a Tree Line USA utility by the Arbor Day Foundation for our quality tree care, annual worker training in quality tree care practices and our tree planting and public education program, we welcome the opportunity to provide power-line friendly trees that not only beautify our environment, but also provide the potential for our customers to save energy and money.¡±
Customers are reminded to call 811 before they dig to avoid hitting underground utilities.
About Energy-Saving Trees: Energy-Saving Trees is a new energy-efficiency program from the Arbor Day Foundation that expands their effort to work with utility companies across the nation. Currently the Arbor Day Foundation¡¯s Tree Line USA program recognizes 146 public and private utility companies that demonstrate practices that protect and enhance America¡¯s urban forests. Energy-Saving Trees provides utilities and communities with a turn-key energy-efficiency program using strategic tree planting around homes and buildings. Learn more about Energy-Saving Trees at arborday.org/energysavingtrees.
About The Arbor Day Foundation:
The Arbor Day Foundation is a million-member nonprofit conservation and education organization with a mission of inspiring people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. More information about the Foundation and its conservation programs can be found at www.arborday.org

Neighbors,
At tonight's PSA 106 meeting, Lt. Fowler gave a good update on the rash of Theft From Auto events in the west Lincoln Park area (Independence Ave to East Cap between 8th and 11th St).
MPD statistics show an unusually high number of Thefts from Auto in the past 30 days, but that these incidents may be shifting into PSA 107 (East of 13th St). ?Between 6 September and 5 October, there were 31 Thefts from Auto in PSA 106, which is significantly higher than normal. ?In the past 7 days, there were 3 Thefts from Auto in PSA 106. ?During the same 7 day period, PSA 107 reported 13 Thefts from Auto. ? It's too early to tell if this represents a permanent shift, but it tracks with information MPD has gathered that the primary person of interest resided in PSA 106, but may have recently left the PSA 106 area. ?
Lt. Fowler reports that MPD is monitoring the person of interest.
To deter and prevent further thefts, we'll be taking the following actions:
?? ? * MPD encourages residents to keep their cars "clean", which means nothing visible on the inside. ?MPD is placing pink chits on cars with visible items inside to encourage owners to remove or hide their belongings. ?These are not tickets. ?Think of them as friendly reminders.
?? ? * I'll be sending a note to the Department of Urban Forestry asking them to trim the trees along the 100 and 200 blocks of 11th St in order to improve the lighting. ?MPD will send a supporting e-mail. ?
?? ? * There are two 311 trouble tickets in process with DDOT to fix the broken street lamp on the 100 block of 11th St. ?I'll be entering a 3rd and sending e-mails to city reps asking them to expedite the repair of this light.
?? ? * Lt Fowler will be providing a description and/or picture of the primary person of interest, which I'll distribute upon receipt. ?? ? * We'll schedule a series of additional walks over the next month, which MPD will support.
Lastly, ?the officers of PSA 106 have offered to conduct "ride-alongs" with interested residents. ?I think it would be great if a few of us took them up on the offer. ?If nothing else, it improves our communication and coordination with MPD and increases our understanding of how these dedicated public servants patrol and perceive the neighborhood. ?
Please let me know if you have and questions, concerns or ideas.

Perhaps the sidewalk alley right behind our house that goes into Gessford Court or the alley accoss from us provide easy getaways.
So, the police know who is doing this and he has been locked up few times already.? His name is Nate Adams (need to verify, my mind was not operating at 100% at 3:30).? She said that police follow him around when they see him and arrest him when he does something.? He has been caught inside cars.? The officer also prevented a potential mugging by him.? As to why he keeps getting released, I am not sure.? I was going to see if I could check arrest records for Nate/Nathan/Nathaniel Adams.? The officer said there is a plain clothes walking the neighborhood at night and that I could write the commander to request more.? There has got to be more we can do.? He gets arrested, released, and then breaks into more cars.? I suspect in a month I will be going back to the shop to replace the window again.

Another reason for the darkness on 11th Street, SE?may be that?some of the?trees in sidewalk tree boxes are so big that branches may be limiting the effect of the street lights. I am not advocating cutting?our beautiful?trees down, but perhaps a light trim?to some of them, (like the tree in front of 206/208 11th street) might provide a bit more light on the street and sidewalks. I have contacted our council person, Tommy Wells, but haven't heard back from his office yet. Anyone have any idea how we could get?the trees trimmed on our block?

Hi Brian,
Unfortunatelly that is too late for me, however I am out walking dogs around 5:20 am weekdays along with another neighbor.? That should be helpful since some of the breakins occur around that time.
I am at the intersection of 11th and Independence.? My wife's car has been broken into twice over the last couple months.? Nothing in it except car seats for the kids and a Thomas the Train sticker book.? The second time was this morning at about 3:30 am (the first one was around 4:00 am a couple months ago).? The person tried again to pry off the frame around the rear passenger side window and ultimatly broke the glass setting off the alarm.? So looks like another $1K repair job.? ?Hi Neighbors,
This is a great opportunity for me to send a rather belated message.? My apologies I didn't follow up the day after the walk.
Brian and a number of other neighbors walked around the neighborhood (in the rain, nonetheless!) last Saturday evening as planned.? We were lucky to have the company of one of the officers who patrols our area.? He spoke with us prior to heading out and pointed
out a few things we can all be more conscious of.
Lighting, while there is a light out on 11th (we wrote it down and Brian is going to bring it to the attention of the proper authorities) we still noticed that there are quite a few dark areas around 11th street.? It was discussed that perhaps as a deterrent,
we all might consider leaving our front and back lights on in the hopes that would increase viability and discourage these thefts.?
We also noticed a number of tree boxes that have large bushes growing in them.? The officer indicated? these can provide some cover for thieves to get in and out of our cars quickly and easily.? If you live near one, and have some time this weekend, consider
trimming it back.? We're certainly not asking you cut down your bushes, but cleaning them up a bit might help?
Aside from that, we had a quiet walk.? There was also discussion about making walking a more regular event, as Brian said, increasing our presence will deter theirs.? Please let us know if you would be interested in joining us regularly to walk around so we
can organize accordingly.
Best,
Meg

Eastern Market Legislation
Neighbors,
FYI for those interested in pending Eastern Market legislation. ?CM Wells is hosting a public meeting tomorrow evening from 6 to 8PM in the North Hall to discuss the bill. ?ANC6B will be hosting or co-hosting a listening session in the next two to three weeks. ?I'll let you know when it's scheduled.

Gentlemen,
?
Tommy introduced the Eastern Market legislation a few
moments ago at the legislative meeting this morning. I¡¯ve attached a copy
for you (as well as a summary).
?
We¡¯ve also placed a summary and copy of the bill on
our website so that people can download if they¡¯d like. Here¡¯s that
link: .
?
The bill was referred to the Committee of the Whole, rather
than the Committee on Government Operations as we had earlier discussed. The
reason the Chair gave was that the COW has oversight of the Department of
General Services (which is absorbing the Department of Real Estate Services;
which manages Eastern Market currently).
?
Thanks,
Charles
