Yard Sale -- Columbus Day Weekend

Susan Eads Role

You¡¯re Invited to Participate in the
200 Block of 9th, 10th, & 11th Streets SE YARD SALE
Saturday, October 8, & Sunday, October 9

We¡¯re planning to hold a Yard Sale this fall in the two alleys that run between and parallel to the 200 blocks of 9th and 10th Streets SE, and 10th and 11th Streets SE.? We¡¯ll do it over Columbus Day Weekend, Saturday, October 8, and Sunday, October 9, from 9 am to 3 pm each day.? Everyone on all sides of the two alleys is invited to participate.? Also, neighbors not adjoining the alleys are welcome to partner with a neighbor on the alleys to join the sale.

In previous years, we¡¯ve found block yard sales to be a lot of fun, plus you get rid of some clutter. This year, we¡¯re hoping that involving two alleys will draw even more customers.? We¡¯ll put up fliers and posters around the neighborhood and advertise in the Post and other media.? Everyone will bring the items they want to sell out to their garage, parking pad, or backyard during the Yard Sale, and between customers we¡¯ll all get to visit.? Usually, the weather is great by then, and the fliers, posters, and ads generate lots of customer traffic.? We¡¯ll hold the Yard Sale both days, but you can participate as little or as much as you¡¯d like. The more the merrier!

We have a core group planning the Yard Sale, but we need your help to make it successful.? We need volunteers to walk around the neighborhood to put up fliers the weekend before the sale -- October 1 and 2 -- and then take them down after the sale.? We will provide the fliers and tell you where to post them.? We need help making the larger posters to attract customers.? We also need a $10 donation from participants to help pay for advertising and supplies.? Many hands will make the work lighter.? If you plan to participate and can help, please tell us by Thursday, September 22.? You can fill out the form below or send us an e-mail.? We need the contact information to make it easier to communicate any last-minute instructions.

We¡¯re looking forward to hearing from you and hope to see you at the Yard Sale!

DPW TO COLLECT TREE DEBRIS FROM TREEBOX AUG. 29-SEPT. 2 ONLY
For this week only, DPW will collect bundled branches from the space in front of residences.

(Washington, DC)? The DC Department of Public Works announced today how the Department will assist residents who are cleaning up after Hurricane Irene.

?1.? If hiring a tree specialist or landscaping company to cut up fallen trees and limbs, please have your contractor remove all the debris, limbs and branches.
?2.? From Aug. 29-Sept. 2 only, the Department of Public Works will remove from the treebox space(s) in front of residents¡¯ homes, branches that are cut into 4' lengths and tied into bundles no more than 2' in diameter.? After Sept. 2, these items can be placed where the resident¡¯s trash is collected.
?3.? Please place debris, bagged or loose, in the treebox space, not the gutter or street so the gutters can remain clear and crews can run mechanical sweepers along the curb lanes and gutters.? MAYOR VINCENT C. GRAY DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

District, Regional and Federal Agencies Prepare for Impacts of Hurricane Irene

???????????????????????????????

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) ¨C Mayor Vincent C. Gray has declared a State of Emergency in the District of Columbia and is urging residents to take the necessary precautions to prepare for the effects of Hurricane Irene.

?

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, flash floods, coastal and estuary flooding, high winds and the threat of tornadoes to the area. The city is getting ready for the impending storm and placing agencies on alert.

?

¡°While we cannot predict with certainty the path of the hurricane, residents must be ready,¡± said Mayor Gray. ¡°That means residents need to have a plan that they can activate. If they do not have a plan, they can go to to learn what is needed. These storms can cause power outages that may last through several days. Residents should have an adequate supply of medications, infant formula, water, fresh batteries and other essentials.¡±

?

The District¡¯s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will begin operating around the clock at 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 27. Interagency personnel will gather at the EOC, at the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency¡¯s headquarters on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE, to monitor conditions and coordinate the District government¡¯s response to the storm.

?

To follow emergency alerts on a real-time basis via , input #DCIrene into the search field to see all the participating District agencies responses and alerts.

?

?

Sandbags Available 8/27 at Noon

?

The Department of Public Works is assisting residents with preparing their homes to withstand flooding by distributing five sandbags per household beginning at noon, Saturday, August 27, at RFK Stadium, Lot 7. DPW staff will be on hand to direct residents to the distribution point. Distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis, and will continue until the supply is exhausted. Residents will be asked to show D.C. identification.

Transportation

?

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) are working to ensure the safety of the traveling public from potential storm-related impacts.

?

WMATA is taking steps in advance to prevent service disruptions. Specifically:

?

¡¤???????? Crews have placed more than 2,000 sandbags around the escalators at Metrorail stations that have a history of flooding issues.

¡¤???????? All drainage pumping stations are being checked in advance of the storm and will be monitored throughout the weekend.

¡¤???????? Plant maintenance staff is clearing drainage areas near stations and yards.

¡¤???????? Additional support personnel have been scheduled to be on duty throughout the weekend to respond to any situations that may arise.

¡¤???????? Chainsaws are being deployed in Metro motor vehicles for use in the event of downed trees.

?

¡°We¡¯re putting all of our resources in place to address any issues that arise out of the extreme weather conditions this weekend,¡± said Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles. ¡°We will be updating our customers through our website, Twitter, email alerts and the media.¡±

?

Metro will provide service information throughout the storm online at and via . Metrorail customers may also sign up for Metro alerts via e-mail by visiting or tune to broadcast traffic reports for service information.

?

Given the probability of severe winds and the potential for flooding DDOT¡¯s active construction, project worksites are being secured to prevent damage. DDOT has also directed permit holders working in public space to take measures to ensure their work zones are secured. All work in the right of way, with the exception of emergency repairs, will be suspended at the close of business today (Friday, August 26).

?

In addition:

?

¡¤???????? Drainage ways in flood-prone areas are being cleared and actively monitored to prevent flooding issues.??

¡¤???????? Generators are being deployed city-wide to provide backup power for traffic signals.?

¡¤???????? The Urban Forestry Administration is proactively pruning trees along some critical roadways.

¡¤???????? DDOT personnel and contractors will be on call throughout the weekend to clear downed trees and debris.

¡¤???????? DDOT is coordinating emergency evacuation preparedness efforts with HSEMA, U.S. DOT, VDOT and MDOT and will continue to track the weather conditions through the weekend.

?

DDOT will be providing critical traffic-related and emergency information on a real time basis via . Residents are strongly urged to avoid traveling during the storm if possible.? High winds could topple trees and pose a hazard to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

?

If weather conditions become unsafe, transit services may be impacted or suspended during the storm. For updates please use the following resources:

Metrorail and Metrobus: and

DC Circulator: and

Capital Bikeshare: , and

?

?

DC Water

?

DC Water facilities are equipped to withstand weather-related events, and water service interruptions are not anticipated during the hurricane. This includes during power outages. In an effort to minimize water damage, DC Water has checked and cleared storm drains in all areas at risk for flooding.

?

DC Water crews will be stationed throughout the District to monitor hurricane impacts and respond to emergencies. The 24-Hour Command Center will operate in a location with backup power and available for emergency response. The Washington Aqueduct, responsible for treating District drinking water, is working closely with DC Water to monitor water treatment plants and the distribution system.

?

DC Water encourages residents to prepare for Hurricane Irene:

?

¡¤???????? Collect cold tap water for storage ¨C one gallon per person (or pet) per day. Store water in a cool environment. Bottled water is unnecessary and most stores are sold out after so many people paid more than a $1 per gallon. Turn on the tap ¨C it¡¯s a penny per gallon.

¡¤???????? Consider freezing a few jugs, and place these in the fridge during a power outage to keep food cold.

¡¤???????? Minimize flooding risks ¨C clear gutters and downspouts.

¡¤???????? Store unscented liquid household chlorine bleach to disinfect water if service is interrupted and for general cleaning and sanitizing.

¡¤???????? Help DC Water after the storm - safely remove debris blocking storm drains or call 202- 612-3400 for major blockage.

?

Residents should report water emergencies and flooding to the 24-Hour Command Center at 202-612-3400.

For more information, visit or contact DC Water Customer Service at 202-354-3600 and the 24-Hour Command Center at 202-612-3400.

?

Citizens are asked to call 311 to report any downed trees or branches in the public space and to provide as much detail as possible.

?

?

Emergency Information Resources:

?

Emergency preparedness information is available at and at . Members of the public are also encouraged to sign up to receive updates on severe weather, traffic and incidents via email and/or text message from ALERT DC at . Residents can also monitor cable in the District for storm updates.

?

Detailed information about traffic evacuation routes and transportation tips for an emergency incident are available online at .

?

Residents should report water emergencies and flooding to the 24-Hour Command Center at 202-612-3400.

Subject: Thanks and follow up

Lt Fowler,

Thanks again for coming out last week and taking a stroll through the neighborhood. ?I know the neighbors you spoke with appreciated your interaction. ?Hopefully you left the walk with a better understanding of our specific issues and the feeling that you are working in a neighborhood that is very supportive of MPD, its officers and its mission. ?

I just wanted to follow up on a few things we discussed:

??* I spoke with Council Member Well's Chief of Staff, Charles Allen, regarding the bait bike program. ?The money for the program will become available on 1 October, at the start of the new fiscal year. ?Charles described the budget line as essentially funds that will be transferred from DDOT to MPD in order to purchase the bikes and execute the program. ?As you heard on our walk, bike thefts are an endemic problem in our neighborhood, so I will be keeping a close eye on how this program is executed, and would like for the south Lincoln Park area to be a "first adopter" neighborhood. ?I appreciate your help in making this a reality.

?* I'll put out some information on the National Bike Registry. ?If MPD has any specific tips or best practices, please let me know.

?* I'll send Damian Harvey, DDOT, a note about the signage issue at the corner of 8th and Independence Ave, and the resulting illegal parking. ?I appreciate your help in routing the request to your contacts, and for letting your officers know that this is a spot that is primed for increased enforcement activities. ?

?* If you don't mind sending me the names of the officers in the PSA 106 Full Stride program, and their general areas of operation, I will get this information out on the list serves and e-mail distributions that I monitor. ?Several folks have asked me if MPD is still employing a beat officer strategy. ?I think the visibility of the program has diminished somewhat over time, as officers have turned over and the Department completed its initial outreach campaign. ?For me, one of the highlights of our walk was running into the woman in Gessford Ct who was quick to compliment and praise the patrol officer that she sees every day. ?Clearly this is an important program. ?I'd like to be sure that people in the neighborhood know that this is still a central element of MPD's policing strategy, and that they have the information they need to form a basic relationship with their respective patrol officers. ?

?* At some point in the not too distant future, I'd like to set up another attempt to meet with some additional folks in Gessford Court. ?I shared some of their unique concerns, but I'd like for them to have the opportunity to share it directly with you. ?I'll also encourage them to attend the next PSA 106 meeting.

?* To recap a few of the "trouble" spots we surveyed
?? ? - Frequent running of the stop sign at the corner of 8th and C St
?? ? - Buses and speeding along Independence Ave
?? ? - Illegal parking along Independence Ave from 6th St to 9th St
?? ? - Bike thefts and vandalism in our many alleys

?Thanks again, Eddie. ?Please let me know if there's anything I or the community can do to assist you and your officers in making our neighborhood a safe place to live. ?We are all appreciative of and indebted to the efforts of you and your officers, and are happy to help in any way possible.

Neighbors,
?
Lt. Fowler and I will be doing our "walk about" this Wednesday night. ?I'd like to resolicit for anyone who might be?interested in:? a) walking with us (part or all of the tour) b) doing a 2-minute meet and greet at your door or c) offering up issue areas and problem spots for us to visit.
?
As far as issue areas,?so far I plan on taking him to some of our court areas, e.g. Gessford Ct, through some of our alleys and by our major traffic areas (Lincoln Park, Independence Ave, 8th St between Independence and D St).?
?
Best,

Brian

Hi Lt. Fowler--hope this e-mail finds you well.

I wanted to follow up on our discussion about doing a walk through of the SMD. ?Would next Saturday work for you? ?An alternative would be a week from Monday in the early evening (6-8PM). ?Please let me know what works for you.

Thanks and appreciate all of your hard work on behalf of the community. ?Hopefully I'll have a chance to touch base with you Tuesday night at the MPD-1 National Night Out.

Best,

Brian

random car parked in our driveway

Katy P

Hi all.
?
Our nanny emailed and said that there is a random car parked in our (under the porch) parking spot and it has been all day. She took photos of the car and the license, but I think at this point in the day, we might want to have it towed.
?
By chance are any of you expecting visitors that may have accidentally parked in the wrong spot?
?
Thanks,

Carjacking alert

?
I'm forwarding the alert below?that was posted on?MOTH .?This carjacking happened?yesterday nearby. Below is the description of events.
"Just want to remind you all to be extra vigilant out there. Today, at 4:30pm, i
was physically assaulted and had my purse and car stolen by an unarmed
(thankfully) assailant. It happened at the corner of 13th and North Carolina, NE. The good news is that some
neighbors heard my screaming and phoned police. MPD
did a brilliant job of pursuing the creep, apprehending him, and returning all
of my things. The assailant apparently watched me exit my car and lock it. He just followed
me, jumped me from behind, threw me to the ground and fought for my keys and
purse. So please be super aware that you could be being watched as you exit your
car. stay safe!"

A friend is looking to rent a parking space, short term

Hi all-
A friend of mine is likely moving to the neighborhood (8th and Independence) on a short-term basis.? He will be here roughly mid-August through mid-October.? He is just returning from an overseas stint with the state department.? His car is registered out of state so he will be looking for somewhere to park it.
?
Does anyone have, or know of, a place he would be able to rent to park for about 2 months?
?
Thanks/
