Recap of "walk about" with Lt Eddie Fowler, PSA 106 Lieutenant

Brian Pate

Neighbors,

Thanks to those of you who participated in the SMD "walk about" with Lt. Fowler last week. ?Below please find a recap of our conversations and observations along the walk. ?Of note, Lt. Fowler has provided the names and general patrol routes for the "Full Stride" officers in our area. ?These are essentially your "neighborhood beat officers"--good people to know!?

I'll schedule another walk about with Lt. Fowler in the Winter. ?In the mean time, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact him or me directly. ?

Best,

Brian

Lt Fowler,

Thanks again for coming out last week and taking a stroll through the neighborhood. ?I know the neighbors you spoke with appreciated your interaction. ?Hopefully you left the walk with a better understanding of our specific issues and the feeling that you are working in a neighborhood that is very supportive of MPD, its officers and its mission. ?

I just wanted to follow up on a few things we discussed:

??* I spoke with Council Member Well's Chief of Staff, Charles Allen, regarding the bait bike program. ?The money for the program will become available on 1 October, at the start of the new fiscal year. ?Charles described the budget line as essentially funds that will be transferred from DDOT to MPD in order to purchase the bikes and execute the program. ?As you heard on our walk, bike thefts are an endemic problem in our neighborhood, so I will be keeping a close eye on how this program is executed, and would like for the south Lincoln Park area to be a "first adopter" neighborhood. ?I appreciate your help in making this a reality.

?* I'll put out some information on the National Bike Registry. ?If MPD has any specific tips or best practices, please let me know.

?* I'll send Damian Harvey, DDOT, a note about the signage issue at the corner of 8th and Independence Ave, and the resulting illegal parking. ?I appreciate your help in routing the request to your contacts, and for letting your officers know that this is a spot that is primed for increased enforcement activities. ?

?* If you don't mind sending me the names of the officers in the PSA 106 Full Stride program, and their general areas of operation, I will get this information out on the list serves and e-mail distributions that I monitor. ?Several folks have asked me if MPD is still employing a beat officer strategy. ?I think the visibility of the program has diminished somewhat over time, as officers have turned over and the Department completed its initial outreach campaign. ?For me, one of the highlights of our walk was running into the woman in Gessford Ct who was quick to compliment and praise the patrol officer that she sees every day. ?Clearly this is an important program. ?I'd like to be sure that people in the neighborhood know that this is still a central element of MPD's policing strategy, and that they have the information they need to form a basic relationship with their respective patrol officers. ?

?* At some point in the not too distant future, I'd like to set up another attempt to meet with some additional folks in Gessford Court. ?I shared some of their unique concerns, but I'd like for them to have the opportunity to share it directly with you. ?I'll also encourage them to attend the next PSA 106 meeting.

?* To recap a few of the "trouble" spots we surveyed
?? ? - Frequent running of the stop sign at the corner of 8th and C St
?? ? - Buses and speeding along Independence Ave
?? ? - Illegal parking along Independence Ave from 6th St to 9th St
?? ? - Bike thefts and vandalism in our many alleys
?? ? - Speeding along the south side of Lincoln Park (largely solved by the recent installation of table top speed bumps and improved signage, but still a concern).

?* I was encouraged to hear that you feel that PSA 106 is adequately staffed. ?Please don't hesitate to leverage the community if, in your opinion, this ever changes. ?

?Thanks again, Eddie. ?Please let me know if there's anything I or the community can do to assist you and your officers in making our neighborhood a safe place to live. ?We are all appreciative of and indebted to the efforts of you and your officers, and are happy to help in any way possible.

All the best,

Brian ?
