Brian Pate
Neighbors,
See below RE the sentencing for David Vines, one of two chronic offenders responsible for at least one of the many thefts from auto committed in our neighborhood last September and October. ? Assistant US Attorney Bednar is seeking community impact statements to help him build the case that Vines adversely impacts the community. ?I intend to write a statement, and am looking for 2-3 others to prepare statements as well. ?If you are interested, please contact AUSA Bednar directly, and please CC me. ?A neighbor with significant experience is willing to help us craft effective statements, and, I'd also like to keep an archive of statements for future use. I don't want to come across as vindictive or lacking compassion, but Vines is an incorrigible criminal. ?He has over two-dozen misdemeanors and felonies on the books, and a 100% recidivism rate. ?He is a shining example of the failure of the city's judiciary to effectively deal with the system's worst offenders. ?We bear the financial and psychological burden of that failure. ? (USADC) [mailto:Thomas.Bednar@...] ? Lieutenant Thornton:? I am the prosecutor assigned to David Vines¡¯ many cases involving theft from auto in 1D.? I wanted to let you know that he pled guilty today in his latest case, to one count of Felony Second Degree Theft, with the repeat-offender provision.? He faces a mandatory-minimum of one year in jail.? He will be sentenced in this case and in a felony contempt case on February 24.? I will plan to make a presentation to the sentencing judge outlining the impact Vines has had in the community over the years.? If you or any of your officers would like to share any information about this defendant or his community impact, I encourage you to do so, so that I can educate this judge on how severe a nuisance Vines has been.? I can be reached at 252.7877 or this email address.? Best, Tom Bednar ? Thomas A. Bednar Assistant United States Attorney District of Columbia 555 Fourth Street NW Washington, D.C. 20530 ? ? ?
