Dear Maury Family,
Happy first day of school! I'm following up on my request from earlier this summer regarding Halloween with an update on the proposal. For those who missed it, I've been working to pilot a closure of East Capitol to (moving) vehicles from 5-9 pm on Halloween to allow for a safer trick-or-treating experience for all.
The Commissioners responsible for the 800 to 1000 blocks of East Capitol Street are seeking leadership from the residents of these blocks to take this effort forward. If you are a resident of one of these blocks (or know someone who is) and are interested in pursuing a closed street pilot for Halloween, can you please reach out to your Commissioner?
If you are not a resident of those blocks and have comments about the proposal please feel reach out to the Commissioners (details below) and let them know what you think (it is helpful to identify which block you live in). Please send your emails in advance of the ANC meetings (which take place the first and second weeks of September). Feel free to copy me if you wish: AmberANC6A at?? School hasn¡¯t even begun but some of us are already thinking about Halloween...
In response to resident requests for increased safety, our ANC is considering a proposal to pilot the closure of a portion of East Capitol to cars on Halloween. Currently we are in very preliminary discussions with MPD and DDOT but are considering closing East Capitol from 8th to 11th streets to moving vehicles (already parked cars would remain in place) from 5 pm to 9 pm. This would hopefully increase pedestrian safety and ease congestion on the very crowded sidewalks by allowing some foot (and stroller) traffic to use the street.
?To get this going we are hoping to identify a ¡°block lead¡± for each block who can work with their Commissioners to talk to neighbors and request ANC support to move this forward.
?If you are a resident of the following blocks and would be willing to help (or just have comments on the idea) please contact your Commissioner:
