At the direction of the EPA, the members of LDWG are cleaning up this contamination to improve the waterway’s ecosystem and protect people who use the waterway. The Lower Duwamish Waterway cleanup involves seasonal construction for the next decade. After three seasons of cleanup in the upper reach, cleanup construction will continue downstream towards the south end of Harbor Island, first in the middle reach and then in the lower reach. The Lower Duwamish Waterway Group is a collaboration between Boeing, the City of Seattle, and King County that is committed to advancing the cleanup of the Lower Duwamish under EPA oversight. Comment on our proposal to adopt federal numeric limits on toxic substances in water (human health criteria) Ecology is proposing to clarify the water pollution limits used in clean water programs in our state by transferring the existing federal limits for Washington into state rule. This action would not change the existing criteria already in effect. The human health criteria protect people, particularly those who eat fish and shellfish and drink untreated water, from experiencing long-term health effects from pollution in rivers, lakes and marine water in Washington. We want to learn from community members about environmental justice considerations from this rule. Because this action would adopt federal regulations without any changes, we’ve started with a formal proposal and public comment period. We are particularly interested in hearing from: Community members who are directly affected by this topic Individuals who are especially vulnerable to pollution risks in the water Those who consume fish or drink untreated water from local sources People who are not usually involved with Ecology’s work You can provide feedback on human health criteria in several ways: Join our environmental justice listening session: Oct. 23, 2024, at 3 p.m. Submit online comments: Our comment period is open from 12 a.m. on Sept. 17 until 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2024. Schedule a meeting: We can also attend a meeting your group is hosting to receive feedback and respond to your questions about this rule.
