The fact that a locally defined object had the correct distance would seem to imply that there was a data error in your received packet from VK5RR. There's no guarantee the packet had the same bit errors at the I-gate that ported it to the APRS-IS
backbone, as opposed to at your RF station.
Did you look at that Object in the Radio View, or in the Station/Object List??

For what it¡¯s worth, I created an object in the same vicinity as VK5RR and the calculated distance to that object was correct. I¡¯m not sure if that tells us anything about the apparent error that occurred when VK5RR's position was captured on 30M.?
I haven¡¯t heard him in a few days, but I¡¯ll let you know when I do. There were no other VK stations heard that night.
