Why not Google Community

Does push you emails?

I do prefer the way that the google community functions. Much better organized than yahoo and I can very simply chose which discussion I want to monitor to ignore. Yet, I can simply search as well.?

It's easy to read on any device and you can also imbed pictures to tell a better story.?

Where do they get their funding ? ?How do we know a year from now, they go through the same thing and someone else buys them.?

They all do that. Don't kid yourself.?

The internet was never designed to be secure. ?If the data passes through the US it is collected and analyzed. ?It's called Prism to name one project.?

No one does anything for free. Even must be selling the meta data or they couldn't afford to operate.?

Their data is not encrypted from prying eyes, including google or the NSA.?

Yes they do.

For some reason, Google Groups has been less desirable for some groups I'm on. I am on a couple Google groups and they're OK. I don't know if they have the same files, photos, etc. features.

Any internet base for groups is probably subject to being gone some day, even Google. I've had several e-mail addresses in the past that were terminated when the hosting groups disappeared.

As an additional note, it's been some months now since Yahoo changed hands and nothing has happened yet.

No one does anything for free. Even groups.io <> must be selling the meta data or they couldn't afford to operate.

Mike,

Strangely enough they are free.
They say "A modern platform for online communities. Powerful management tools. Mobile ready. Free and paid plans. No ads, no tracking."

But he does not say how it is funded....

It's the same guy that started what became Yahoo Groups, so I assume he invested his money wisely and has been supporting out of his own pocket, so to speak. Those that have chosen paying groups are helping to support it as well.

Alan

I don't buy it.? Who is paying for their hardware, server time, power, cooling, etc?

If Mark Fletcher is doing it out of the good of his heart, the question is why?? If it is truly free, then he is funding it until he can sell it to the next highest bidder.? That is way this works and lots of history on that.

Hey claims that the business is self funding, but he won't answer where the money comes from.? That was asked in November 2016 and he has not replied. ?

The do collect and share your meta data:

Non-Identifiable Data:?When you interact with Groups.io through the Services, we receive and store certain personally non-identifiable information. Such information, which is collected passively using various technologies, cannot presently be used to specifically identify you. Groups.io may store such information itself or such information may be included in databases owned and maintained by Groups.io affiliates, agents or service providers. The Services may use such information and pool it with other information to track, for example, the total number of visitors to our Site, the number of visitors to each page of our Site, and the domain names of our visitors' Internet service providers. It is important to note that no Personal Data is available or used in this process.

Business Transfers

As we develop our business, we might sell or buy businesses or assets. In the event of a corporate sale, merger, reorganization, dissolution or similar event, Personal Data may be part of the transferred assets.

Related Companies

We may also share your Personal Data with our Related Companies for purposes consistent with this Privacy Policy.

Groups.io may also in its sole discretion and at any time discontinue providing the Service, or any part thereof, with or without notice.

These guys are no different then any of the other 'free' services.? They make money by dealing with content that you supply them, even if it is MetaData.? And, don't kind yourself, even MetaData contains enough information to actually figure out who you are.? This has been proven in court in the US a few times.

Personally, I'm not really fussed and I likely won't move unless I have a requirement to be there.? I will ?just likely search the forum and see if there is an answer for my problem or not, as it isn't my group.? However, if you believe that Google is the big bad person in this, they are all in bed together in their own way.? Content is king as they say. ?:)

If you have time, read some of the Snowden documents.? If you don't, watch the movie on Netflix. ?

If you own a computer and it is actually connected to the internet, you are always being tracked.? If you are seriously concerned about that, get off the net (as in no connection).? Don't own any phone and pay cash for everything.

BTW, if you have ever been on a site and a popup comes up and says I see you are looking at this 'widget', can I help?? Well, there are tools used by the Amazon's of the world that actually 'watch' you navigate the store.? How long you stayed on a page, and every click you made within their store.? I've seen it in action.? Scary, isn't it.? I saw a sales presentation on it from another job I was in.

Hi Mike,

I suppose people could draw some conclusions merely from your presence on this list..whether or not the conclusions are correct. You must have enough income to buy theproducts associated with this list but maybe that is an incorrect conclusion. Perhaps I am just dreaming of the day I can buy a SoftRock :)

I have some things I do not wish to share with others and those live on a computer(s) that do not see the internet and the internet does not see them. Your suggestions has a lot of merit. I am reinforcing it now. Keep your private things private..not on the net.

Hi Mike,

I suppose people could draw some conclusions merely from your presence
on this list..whether or not the conclusions are correct. You must have
enough income to buy theproducts associated with this list but maybe
that is an incorrect conclusion. Perhaps I am just dreaming of the day I
can buy a SoftRock :)

I have some things I do not wish to share with others and those live on
a computer(s) that do not see the internet and the internet does not see
them. Your suggestions has a lot of merit. I am reinforcing it now. Keep
your private things private..not on the net.

Too bad I'm reading your email in gmail.

They also offer commercial accounts with more features.

They all do that. Don't kid yourself.

The internet was never designed to be secure. If the data passes
through the US it is collected and analyzed. It's called Prism to
name one project.

No one does anything for free. Even groups.io <> must
be selling the meta data or they couldn't afford to operate.

Their data is not encrypted from prying eyes, including google or the
NSA.

Does groups.io <> push you emails?

I do prefer the way that the google community functions. Much better
organized than yahoo and I can very simply chose which discussion I
want to monitor to ignore. Yet, I can simply search as well.

It's easy to read on any device and you can also imbed pictures to
tell a better story.

Where do they get their funding ? How do we know a year from now,
they go through the same thing and someone else buys them.

Bogus? Well a month back we had the discussion on the list and hardly
anyone participated either, actually way less than 92 responded in any
way so the survey had a lot more responses.

So in your opinion is a not bogus way to discuss this issue?

Bogus because you have to log into Yahoo to vote. Most of us dont do

16 votes or 16% to stay until something happens

12 votes or 13% to let the moderators decide

2 votes or 2% not interested in the subject

2 votes or 2% to delete the group.

Not a very decisive size group voted but I was expecting that as most
people just read the messages and are not active.

A total of 92 votes of the members that cared one way or the other.

One thing to keep in mind the move requires no action on the part
of the
members it's all done by groups .io, they would move the
memberaccount,
files, photos, and messages, all I have to do is send them an
email to
go ahead as everything is already setup.

In the meantime as a safety measure I bought some software and I
have a
complete local backup of the groups files, photos, and all
messages in
case of a nuclear meltdown at Verizon/AOL the new owners of Yahoo
groups. Right now there is no mechanism to use that backup to restore
the user data somewhere else but the software can generate a MySQL
database so software could be written to do a restore somewhere else,
that is why I spent some money to have a backup of the groups data.

So what do we do next?

A word of warning. The RSGB have an LF reflector called Blacksheep a few years ago it migrated to Yahoo. The very small LF community is now split between a cranky Blacksheep populated mostly by original diehards who actually build, experiment and operate and the talkers on yahoo?....... so nothing changed apart from splitting a very small community...... sorry to be a drag,

I can't say I'm a massive talker on this Yahoo! group beyond
occasionally popping up to say "Oi you left lysdr off the list of Linux
SDR apps" and "send me more patches for lysdr" :-D

There is little possibility of two communities as if we move the Yahoo
Group will be disabled and eventually deleted.

Am I the only one who thinks it is really, REALLY time to move on? I can't think of anything that could be said that hasn't already been said....eight or ten times.

Hi Bill,

You are not alone. I have been earning my boy scout merit badge for self control and restraint in the presence of some of the nonsense presented here. When push comes to shove I can build and use radios with or without this list no matter where it is hosted (or not). Anything we do has consequences and we can be scared to petrification - just doing nothing at all. That has even more consequences. I am not going to take my ball and bat and go home regardless of whatever is done about moving or not moving. If I had any responsibility for the list it would already be moved and the extra traffic would be complaints about the new location <evil grin>. But don't worry - I am just one of the list peasants :) On lists where I am a moderator I do not kick people out for expressing their concerns even if it takes the form whining and pouting.

Some of my Softrock messages come from the 'io' list already anyway. Those are all placed (automatically) in the same folder as the Yahoo messages. Ain't computers great!? I'll be seeing you here. I'll be seeing your there. I'll be seeing you anywhere.
