Win7 Rocky saga ENDs
? Well I gave up on the Delta 44 ever running reliably at 96Khz for my SoftRock/K3 panadapter. I pressed my USB X-Fi Model SB1090 sound card into service and I am VERY pleased with the results. So much that I bought a second 1090 off ebay to use with the stand-alone 2meter panadapter. A few "hick-ups" when I run two - of the 1090s at the same time, but so far it just looks like I need to be being careful of the order in which the 2 Rockys are started. ? I modified the first 1090 (larger caps in two locations) but found that the signal levels were high enough in the panadaper use, that the mod was not needed. Just
hanging a Softrock receiver/transceiver on a 1090 for HF use, I suspect the levels would be such that the mod might be worth exploring. For HF work with the 6.2 or Ensemble .. I will use the D44 at 48Khz. ? Thanks for those that have attempted to assist me in the transition to Win7 with Rocky. (Still the best SDR program IMHO) 73? Bill? K0AWU ? |

Question on HardRock Driver asm
I am building the Rev B HardRock driver board.
In looking at the asm instructions I do not see where the L201 connections go on the board.
Do they go to the bottem 2 left holes?
My instructions do not allow opening of the bottem 2 photos in the Rev B asm instructions.
Could someone post a photo or a few of the completed Driver board??
?
Thanks,
Lee?

Re: Troubleshooting Lite II Combined receiver, need advice
Thank you, Alan. In this case it WAS possible, it seems. I reheated the joints around the oscillator transistors and when I rechecked the low voltages they had increased by a factor of 8, from a quarter volt to around two volts. Must have been a bad joint that looked good. I've built receivers, transceivers, a TNC, a packet modem, yada yada, and I thought I could tell a bad solder joint on appearance. Let that be a lesson to me!
I hooked up to Quisk on my Linux box and just caught the end of a CW QSO. That "73" sounded SO good! Next project: something for an antenna in place of my 2M mag mount.... I appreciate the suggestions--they steered me right. You're all in the best tradition of ham radio. Lee, WU0V |
Re: Troubleshooting Lite II Combined receiver, need advice
Thanks Mike. The voltages at the test points you listed are per specs, Q1 and Q2 are placed correctly although I'm going to reheat their connections when I get a chance. I no longer have an HF station to enable me to listen on 18.73 for the oscillator (lack of an HF station is what got me into SDR), so it looks like my next step is to find another ham and visit his station with my kit. I too had wondered about the LO, but as the DC voltages were all good I was puzzled. Could I have correct DC voltages and still no oscillation?

Re: Troubleshooting Lite II Combined receiver, need advice
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Lee,
I doubt U2 is bad, more likely no LO signal from the crystal oscillator. ? I would recheck the LO test voltages on R11, R15, R12, R17.? Also did you measure a LO freq on the output?? If no oscillator output the divider readings you measured will be low as you measured. Also check Q1 and Q2 for part type and position on board.? 73,? Mike Collins?? Re: Troubleshooting Lite II Combined receiver, need advice
For the initial 12v supply I'm using a repurposed computer power supply, so I think that part's ok as far as output level and being ripple free. The board's regulator doesn't heat up noticeably and it feeds something around 4.9 to 5v to the other stages. That voltage level is also present at all the other 5v feeds across the circuit. I forgot to say in the first message that U4's voltages are all on spec per the instructions. 'Tis a puzzlement, as Yul Brynner said.
Thank you for the quick reply, Ken! |

How is the supply voltage? Regulator hot?

I no longer have a scope (sold it when I decided to quit fixing antique radios) so about all I could test are the voltage and amperage readings as set out in the assembly instructions. All the current draws are on spec, the continuity checks through the bandpass coils are fine, and all the voltage readings are on the dot EXCEPT for pins 2, 6, 8, 9, and 12 of U2 (the Dividers, 74AC74 chip) and pins 2 & 14 of U3 (the mixers--pins 2 & 14 get their signals from U2 pins 8, 6 & 12 so it's notsurprising their readings echo the others). For the guilty pins, the expected voltage should be about 2.5 but is instead .25v. I haven't found a short to ground or a failed capacitor to explain the low readings. So: my working assumption is that U2 is defective. If so, I'll contact WB5RVZ and see if I can order a replacement. I thought it wise to ask here first, where the well of experience is deep. Maybe I'll get a refreshing idea. Thanks for reading! Lee, WU0V. |

Re: Ensemble II RX problem
EB4APL
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe Ensemble II HF Rx has 4 "superbands" implemented as 4 bandpass filters that are switched in and out the antenna signal path to the quadrature mixer.? The filters switching points are, by design:- Superband 0: 0 -? 4 MHz - Superband 1: 4 -? 8 MHz - Superband 2: 8 - 16 MHz - Superband 3:16 -? ¡Þ MHz They are switched automatically by the ATtiny? 85 microcontroller
. The switching points can be changed? but not recommended,
invoking the configuration utility clicking on ExtIO button,? ABPF
tab.? Be sure that the Enable Filter box is ticked, if not it
could give the symptoms that you have. Ignacio EB4APL On 04/04/2014 2:05, tng5737@... wrote: ? |
Elecraft K3 and CW Skimmer Questions
I have heard that using the Softrock RX Ensemble II will be an excellent interface between my Elecraft K3 and my Toshiba Laptop. Has anyone ever done this? I would like to benefit from CW Skimmer but don't know what all is involved. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated! Mark Griffin KB3Z

Re: Ensemble II RX problem
I checked the Init in CFGSR and it is set to 'Ensemble RX II LF/HF(HF)'??? I also set it for (LF) to see if that would make a diff but it did not.? I have reset if back to the (HF) setting.?? I am beginning to believe tha the board is defective!?? I have ordered a RTL2832 dongle which should arrive in a couple of days in order to have another check of the system.? If it works then I'll assume that the Ensemble bd is?bad. Thanks for the reply! |
Re: Ensemble II RX problem
That sounds like the LF model....
I am not 100% sure of this, but in the Config program/driver that is used to make this radio work there is an option to initialize it as HF or LF model, maybe that is the problem?? I don't have all the driver names/options tabs in front of me or I could go into more detail. |
V9 BPF mods for 472 KHz
I have a Lite+Xtall V9 with the HF BPF Option 1 (1.8~30MHz) and I would like to change the winding on the 1.8-4 MHz section to work down at 500 KHz for the new 630m band.? And maybe for 137 KHz 2200m band.
Will the current cores work down that low?? And if they would (I think they might) any suggestions on the windings count?? And would the caps need to be changed?? And if so to what values? Thanks. VK2DAG |
Re: I need a new laptop...is W7 going to be OK for SDR?
Some have had issues using Rocky with the "beyond-XP" versions of Windows. ?Main issues are when trying to use on-board sound cards. ?External (USB) sound cards seem to go OK with Rocky and Win7
