attiny usb controler without the diodes

cesco12342000

The usb-firmware for the softrocks attiny controller is from here:

Reading the pages i did see there are two options for "level conversion"
of the usb signals. One is what Tony uses with the zehner diodes, the
other one is to do no level conversion at all but run the attiny at 3.6V
instead of 5V. The attiny45 is a 20mhz chip running 16.5mhz, so there
should be enough headroom for this even if it's "outside the spec".

Running the attiny at 3.6V can be done inserting two diodes in the VCC
line. Every diode will have 0.7v drop, together 1.4V. On the IIC side
there sholud be no problem since the si570 is running at 3.3V anyway.

Has someone already tried this ?
obdev.at claims "less distorted signals" with the 3.6V method.

Re: Differences between the Xtall+Lite v8.3 and Xtall+Lite v9.0

Chris, I also have the V8.3 and I have upgraded it with the USB-I2C card for control of the VFO. I have tried to follow the development of the new V9.0 and these are my mental notes.

The V9.0 has that capability built on to the main board and as I understand it now the 6 and 2 meter Band Pass Boards have been Beta tested and should soon be in production or already are. I don't know if these can be used with the V8.3 but I don't see why not. There is also now the 'big' BPF board which contains all of the filters for all of the band segments. That replaces the individual BPF boards used with the V8.3 and an option has just been developed which we expect to become available for solid state band switching for that board. I don't think that the new 'big' BPF can be mounted directly to the V8.3 and I don't think anyone has tried to wire it separately. I invite those involved to correct or add to any of this as you see fit.

In a nut shell you would be going for VHF capability and a lot of convenience with the V9.0 but other than that there is no difference in coverage. I believe the VHF and LB boards are being offered at extra cost as well.

Taking a closer look at the costs:

±á³¾³¾³¾¡..
Homebrew
1. Softrock v6.3 $50.00
2. Motherboard v3.5 $52.50
3. +12V -> +24V Switching PSU $20.00
4. PA-100 SDR AMP $58.00
5. UBW $24.95
6. Switched LPF $69.00
7. RxTx Relay Driver/SWR protection $10.00
8. LPF relay driver $10.00
9. SDS RF relays - no bounce, 6 ms on/off time $10.00
10. The Aluminium casing $10.00
Total $314.45
In comparison,

Appliance (+homebrew)
Flex Radio 1500 $499.00
PA-100 SDR AMP $58.00

Adding the Switched LPF and the 12-24V supply required to be
comparable (needed for the PA-100 SDR AMP to output 20W and meet with
FCC requirements for harmonics):

Switched LPF $69.00
12-24V PSU $20.00

Total $646.00

Hi all,

Building your own all band 20W transceiver is certainly not an
undertaking for the beginner, whether conventional or SDR. There is
certainly a place for the SR Lite kits for people to get their feet
wet, so to speak.

My own journey started with the crystal controlled SR v6.2, and then
the SR v8.3 with Si570 control. By that time I was ready to embark on
an automatically switched all bander based on the SR v6.3.

The total cost of my setup of about US$350 is quite fair value for the
capability (btw, the computation of the comparative cost of the
SDR1500 omitted the $69 switched LPF). The happiness, pride and self
confidence gained is, of course, invaluable.

With more experienced gained from the present Beta run, and the open
source nature of the designs, it is my hope that someone, somewhere
will be able to offer the same capabilities at a lower cost to the SDR
enthusiast community in future.

Well group, after all my BIG talk the internal sound card in my
notebook had a stereo line-in port, I'm not so sure now. On the V9.0
there are equal signals equal distance on both sides of the center freq
peak. The peak is larger on the V9.0 than on the V6.2 Lite RX... or
seems to be anyway.

I spend the last couple hours playing with both radios and they BOTH
have the signal on both sides of the center peak. I have been lisening
to several AM BC stations on 40 meters and 9 mhz both. sounds pretty
good. 40 meters just is not open much at my qth - even on the 756Pro.
I did manage to pick up a couple of CW signals and the V9.0 seems to be
ok on those signals - other than having the same signal on both sides
of the center freq.

I WILL be testing on the desktop over the weekend - BUT not all all
sure that card is stereo input either. "IF" the SB PCI card gets here
Friday maybe I can stick it in for testing.

Thanks to all for comments - and a special thanks to Fred for that

That is what I thought. Most mic inputs on computers are mono and
they provide bias on the third connection.
I have an Aspire One too. Neat machine. I broke the wifi switch, I

is off to Acer for repair. Let's see how that goes.

Re: Image Rejection

Jack

I use a PCI Soundblaster, and as another poster has noted, I need to
ofset one channel by one sample ("Delay right by one sample" in KGKSDR).

However I have tried using PowerSDR and can not get rid of the image
however hard I try!!!

I can not get the image rejection calibration to work (PowerSDR-IF
Stage V0.92)

I have searched for some manual for this software, but I can not find
anything to help!

Have you tried with other software?

I have success with KGKSDR, Rocky and SDRadio, all operating with no
image (But not with PowerSDR!!!).

A friend (K9WEK) built an Xtal version that he had working at his QTH

I am getting exactly the same mirror image with this as I did the Lite
and no diddling of image rejection changes anything.

I am running XP with a USB Soundblaster, Power SDR for USB Softrock
and all the same settings as he is using.

The output of the card shows proper quadrature and the RX meter shows
proper levels on R and L Channels.

Any ideas?

Hi Gents,

I recently bought a Samsung NC10 which is very similar. I saw a hack somewhere for switching the audio inputs. I'll try and find it again.

Incidentally, Rocky takes approx. 33% CPU power on the NC270 Atom based netbooks. A killer portable softrock system if the hi-res audio can be sorted out!

Thanks Alan
I rewound the secondary windings on T100 with no change to the SDR
except that I did hear/see one weak cw signal on 30M. 20 was still
silent. A different sound card produced the same results with just
fewer noise spikes and ground loop mounds visible. The SDR still
works fine on 80 and 40.

Re: Acer Aspire One

My thanks to all who have participated in this post, it is a subject that has been occupying my mind over recent months.

Here in Austrtalia the Acer was due to be shipped with a 6 cell battery as standard from October and I have been holding off waiting for that. I haven't seen any advertised as such yet though. Similarly, I have been waiting for Acer to do something about implementing the on-board SIM card slot that sits beneath the battery but no mention of it's addition to this netbook's features as yet either.

Anyone tried the ASUS version that's being sold...not sure what the model
designation is. It's under $400 here.
There are a lot of competitors in that space now: the Asus Eee 901 and 1000, the MSI Wind, the Dell Inspiron Mini, the HP Mini 1000, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10, and probably some others I missed. Their specs are all very similar: 1.6GHz Atom, usually 1GB RAM (although many of the systems can be expanded to 2GB by the user, netbooks with Windows XP can't be shipped with more than 1GB; it's a license limitation of the ULCPC edition of Windows XP Home), some size of hard disk, and Windows XP Home. There are also netbooks with Linux and with flash storage instead of hard disks; I haven't yet seen one with Linux and a hard disk, though you could install Linux on the ones that come with Windows XP easily enough if you want to. I suspect that every one of them has the same audio limitations; only a mono mic input, just like most other notebook computers.

Aside from that, my personal favorite is the MSI Wind: it has the larger 10" display (instead of 8.9"), a non-glare display rather than glossy (personal taste; glossy gives more vibrant colors but more trouble dealing with lighting), a slightly wider keyboard than many (including the Acer). And the higher-end model has 802.11n networking, Bluetooth, and a 6 cell battery, all for $430 at Micro Center.

Has anybody verified that the Atom CPU has enough horsepower to run SDR applications?
