It appears that programming the ATtiny through an Arduino is a common thing.
I did something like this some time ago with an STM32 microcontroller. I don't remember how exactly, other than one can download additions to the arduino IDE in windows. I may not get time to try it in the next month or two. I ordered some ATtinys from China, but delivery time is very long.

Yes that is a good idea, the quanties are quite limited on attiny85 chips at the moment. I have found a source and can list them separately. As soon as I prove out my programmer, I'll add the ic only to the website.
