Whoops, hit the reply button early. My power supply issues aside, it was actually quite easy to get the SMD components soldered to the board. Thanks to this kit, I no longer fear flat pack components. My prototype seemed to work well, but when I attempted to move it into the (admittedly small) case of the CS-40 I started to run into issues. The 5V regulator would turn on and off randomly, I suspect because of some stray capacitance from the wires. The display wouldn't turn on, there were transmit issues, and as my vacation approached I knew that it would be a while until I could get back into it. I just wanted to say thanks for the advice, and leave you with these pictures of the project at it's last stage:
