Re: Recommended Raspberry PI

Ok Ken,

We’re here to help. I am going to do a straightforward video to load the VITA49 and FlexRadio flows. This will pick up at the point after Node Red is installed. The WiKi will get you to that point.?

I hope to have that video done and uploaded to my YouTube channel tomorrow afternoon.?

Re: Clickable Azimuthal map flow for PSTRotatorAZ

Thanks to Tormod for showing us the SVG node and thanks to Dave, WO2X for showing us how to build maps. ?I have incorporated the SVG flow and map into my rotor control.

I have a few "requests" if Tormod, Dave or other can assist.

I am rotating a SteppIR yagi, with Forward, Bi-directional, and Reverse modes. ?Can/how may I add a third beam? ?

The Third beam would show up when in the "Bi-Directional" mode. ?(Beam 1 > Target, Beam 2 > Forward heading, and Beam 3 Reverse heading. ?I am using Node-Red to get the SteppIR mode info and input beam heading to the Forward and/or the Reverse Beams.

Also, can I change the map based other Node-Red parameters. ?I am thinking I want to have a US Map and a World Map, depending on the range to the Target Station.

I use a Pi 4 with 4 GB ram. Make sure to get a good 5 volt 2.5 amp supply. It uses USB-C for power connector. If you plan to use a relay hat board instead of external relay module make sure the case you choose will fit the hat board, or you can mount the Pi without a case, depends on your needs.?

For interfacing equipment with serial ports you can use USB to serial cables. Use cables with genuine FTDI chipset. Prolific chip cables are unreliable (PL2303). Two good sources for FTDI chipset cables in U.S. are Mouser and DigiKey. You might pay a little more but they are genuine FTDI cables. ?There are also USB to multi serial port and USB to relay modules available.?

Determine list of equipment you want to connect then you can determine your needs. Feel free to post back a list of equipment and the group can
Make suggestions on what works for them.?

I did sit in on a table in Airmeet with the guys from Remote Ham Radio. One of them asked why Node Red and why not an off the shelf solution like Green Heron?

My answer was broken into several parts. First, you need to buy Green Heron products to use their integrated software. That not only limits what you can use but can be costly if you already have equipment that has connectivity.?

Node Red allows us to have disparate “systems” talk to each other. Whether logging programs, rotor controllers, amps, tuners, radios, etc. We are not locked into a limited set of hardware and software. Some of the uses of Node Red for ham radio have been really cool.?

Hi Charlie

Mike and I were talking about the video today and I think Flex will be able to post it on their YouTube channel. Once it is posted we will send the link. The presentation is a good intro. I also have a detailed video on creating the simple 4 relay flow using the KeyeStudio 4 channel relay module. Today’s video covered it but the other video covers it in more detail.?

Thanks to those that joined in today’s video. I wish it could have been more interactive but that would cause it to run a lot longer.?

Alan pretty much answered your question. If all three SDA controllers are in close proximity to each other they can be connected to a single Pi using USB to RS-232 serial cables. I recommend getting genuine FTDI cables since the cables have a unique serial number in each cable’s chipset. You can have individual flows for each SteppIR, then have the controls on a single dashboard. A web browser at each operating position will allow access & control simultaneously, so if position 1 turns SteppIR #2 antenna, it is updated on the browser at all positions.

?

There are ways to do antenna interlocking so if you have antenna switches that allow an operator to choose an antenna it would lock out the other operators from accessing it.

If Ham Plus has accessibility from other software then Node Red can probably interface to it to show antenna status on the dashboard page along with the SteppIR controls.

Re: SteppIR SDA 100 serial data

Phil

What you describe could be done with three Raspberry Pis, each connected to a SteppIR SDA controller.

All three SteppIRs can be shown on one common Node-Red Dashboard.? The dashboards are accessible on any Web Browser, so displaying the common dashboard and controlling the SeppIRs?from four work stations is doable.

I have already done two SteppIRs?in Node-Red/FRStack, but three?would be a simple extension.

In the new?frstack2 folder?rename the FRStackWebApi.service file to FRStackWebApi2.service
Edit the?FRStackWebApi2.service file and set the following:
WorkingDirectory to /usr/local/frstack2
ExeStart urls port assignment from 5025 to 5026

This second instance will be at port 5026.

That should be it other than using the new service name when registering, unregistering and running the new service

Use two Raspberry Pis, one for each radio.

On one of the two Pis, I have modified the "connection" flow to control both instances of Raspberry Pis and display both on one dashboard.

Greetings. I know others here also have more than one Flex 6000 series at a single location. Currently, I’m controlling both radios from one Pi/NodeRed configuration. And FRStack is currently connected to just one of the radios.

My end game is to have FRStack for both radios. So, what’s possible and the path of least resistance / best reliability - a separate Pi/NodeRed/FRStack per Flex, or can two instances of FRStack run on the same Pi without confusion? The separate Pi approach seems straightforward, but requires two browser windows to see both at the same time, which really isn’t how the two radios are operated. They are usually operated by different folks with unrelated operations.

So I’m leaning towards a Pi per radio. Separate dashboards per station. Thoughts?
