Are there any secrets to getting the dashboard layout to do what you'd like

 

I've played around with rearranging my dashboard and despite my best effort I can never get items to group the way I'd like. Are there any secrets to doing this? I've tried changing things in the Dashboard Layout and dragging elements around.
