Re: Abbreviated documentation for more simplistic tasks?

Oristo,
I think you misunderstood my intention in posting that link - it's merely a
good guide which could serve as an inspiration. It's not my suggested guide
for non-japanese speakers at least - I think the learning curve is a little
steep if you have to learn a new language first ;-)

Re: Abbreviated documentation for more simplistic tasks?

Mel,
I did not mean for it to replace your proposed guide - I think it's a great
idea to make something like the steps you proposed. My link to particularly
the Japanese guide was merely for inspiration, and the download link was
because it's the best link to put into a guide that might be long-lived :-)

Re: Abbreviated documentation for more simplistic tasks?

Mel Farrer, K6KBE

Oristo,

The group is a mix of simple users, bench technicians/engineers, and SW
artists. To address how to use this instrument is complex.

The initial user needs to address their application and user needs, the
manual and documents so far do not help. That is, have a branch in the
instructions for each user????

Don't you think that the first time user, of limited technical ability, is
overwhelmed with the complexity of the machine and needs to start with a
solid foundation using Saver? Rather than do a hunt and pick approach to
using the machine? The more technically endowed users don't need this kid
glove approach. But more do.

I am a retired engineer from the RF communications hard wire side of use.
If I can't pick an instrument up and read the user "short form get started"
and use it, it goes into the drawer for later consideration.

The instructions now are appalling. They do more to discourage use rather
and investigate the wonderful potential in this little box.

I have, with a lot of help, gotten to the point of being carefully
comfortable with its functions. That is, without using the manual at all.
It is more of a distraction than a help. The users I have contact with
have been much more help, thank you very much.

I will, for my own clarification, document my steps to go from one
application mode to another and save them in the files for recall. I would
hope others do the same and share it.

Re: NanoVNA-Saver 0.1.3

W5DXP,
thank you very much! If you have update checks enabled, the application
will crash if there is no internet connection. Whoops! :-) I'll fix that in
the next version, and your screenshot has already helped me find the error
I need to handle - but for now, you can disable checking for updates -
either when the application starts and asks you, or by editing the
NanoVNASaver.ini file, and changing "CheckForUpdates=Yes" to
"CheckForUpdates=No". Not that I would recommend disabling updates, but if
the PC doesn't have a permanent internet connection, it wouldn't find
anything anyway. ;-)

I hope this helps, otherwise, do reach out to me again!

I have update the firmware to edy555 0.2.3 , all look ok .
In next step I tried to use console command , which commands is supported ?
I tried to use the scan and sweep , but i wasn't able to change the number of points.
Any suggestion ?
Many thanks in advance

Ok, Now that I have my glass of wine, I suggest something like this for the newbie. It is not without flaws, I am sure, and welcome additions to make it better. Here goes.

1. join the NanoVNA group on "[email protected]" take time to read the files and comments from the message list to get aquianted (sp) with the group.
2. go to the file section and click on "nanovna-saver-redirect.html", sign up for the releases.
3. go the site and go to the bottom of the page and click on "nanovna-saver.v0.1.3.exe"
4. follow the install instructions to your computer.

I like a KISS approach.

Re: Abbreviated documentation for more simplistic tasks?

So a section that shows
all of the features with the computer
That varies by app.
I have worked on the manual for TAPR VNAR4 Windows software,
which is relatively mature and only recently adapted for nanoVNA.
The 7 nanoVNA apps of which I'm aware seem unique enough that
no single manual could do them justice.

what you can do without
Documenting nanoVNA device usage is a better bounded problem,

although confounded by firmware differences
and largely by problematic menu organization.
For example, it seems (to me) senseless to BACK out of TRACE selection
for e.g. FORMAT, SCALE and CHANNEL,
since those options apply only to the most recently selected trace.

So far as I know, TRANSFORM applies only for TDR, AKA DELAY(?).

Difficulty of actual MARKER manipulation on screen precludes demonstrating intended behavior.

Re: The Male Calibration Kit for AliExpress

Hi Rudi
I do not think there is anything required to add/change for the calibration settings.
There are several possibilities for the deviation you see above 800MHz.
1. Did you use a male SMA to N female adaptor directly fitted to the SMA female adaptor for Ch0 ?
2. Did you before using the NanoVNAuser ensure the NanoVNA was correctly calibrated directely at the NanoVNA Ch0 female adaptor with the supplied calibration kit ? and did a sweep og a 25 to 50cm SMA test cable show better result
3. The test cable is probably too long and shall be a N type cable with no adaptors fitted
4. You NanoVNA has a poor bridge as NanoVNA as far as I know has no internal error correction
There is probably more reasons and it would be better if you explained in details you setup
Kind regards
Kurt

Hello Kurt,
I have tried to apply your calibration paper.
I have connected 50 cm RG402 coax cable to the Reference Plane.
The nanoVNA-saver has an additional calibration with 5 segments.
Please see the attached nanoVNA-saver screen capture:

What can I enter in the window Calibration->Calibration standards in order to improve the measurement?

Re: Authorized Distributor with 6mo Warranty?

I received a NanaVNA from NooElec yesterday. It looks okay to me. I think it's a hugen original. Photos below. I ordered it Oct 12. They shipped it from upstate New York Oct 16 by first class USPS. I received it in central Texas in good condition Oct 18. Packing was two layers of bubble bags. The only thing looking like a "case" was the plastic box it ships in.

The promised extras were there - cables, couplers, and a cascade of attenuators. Re-sellers seem to like to sell a bundle like this to distinguish themselves otherwise they are just in a price war with others selling the same thing.

Shields are up. There is a 604020 450 mAh battery tack soldered in, no connector. There is no D2 voltage sense diode installed. The calibration kit looks to be the usual, nothing special there.

NooElec seems to be a small privately owned company. I think it has 50 employees or so. HQ seems to be upstate New York but I suspect it has most of its facilities in York, Ontario. I have bought from them before. They make and resell a range of small items for hams. While this is not the cheapest way to buy a NanoVNA it looks like a way to get a quality unit quickly in North America.

Revised documetn on the N male calibration kit

Hi All

Rudi pointed out that ohms law should be defined more clearly and that is
corrected as well some few lingual bugs.

Please change the document on the WiKi Oristo

Hello Kurt,
In order to minimize the confusion of beginners, please change Ohm's Law: R [Ohm] = U [Volt] / I [Ampere] or R = V / A.
