Re: Simple example of interfacing Octave with nanoVNA #octave

You need to load the instrumentation library
I am running latest Octave on W10

Hi Erik , I tried to use the Octave code , but i'snt works.
Wich version of Octave are you using , and wich OS.
May be my version of Octave 5.1.0.0 on win7 is not supporting the serial function.
any suggestion ?
Many thanks

Lajos, I'm NO expert on NanoVNAs, but I believe the difference you are seeing is due to 2 factors:
1. the total Over All Length of the 2 parts
or
2. the different dilectric constant of the 2.

Re: New version of NanoVNA-Saver: 0.2.1

Hi,

Great idea the higher resolution graph on nanovna saver. I mesured the very non ideal indoor 40 band antenne. The goal construct special tuner to shift 20 meter band electrically. I sweeep 6-15Mhz with osl calibration on nanovna, and nanovna saver calibrated too 10x101 point = 1010 point for better resolutuion. I re check calibration on nanovna and nanovna-saver, which is good. Open, shor, load good small point.

See attached images. With Sim Smith Chart original 1010 point segmented sweep has ripple. Original sweep now reduced to 101 point. Now ripple disappeared, of course the some detail too. Use 1:1 view on picture viewer, small ripple exist if not original size displayed.

101 point data useful on low memory nanovna and for beginnniers. For advanced users i think segmented method very useful on nanovna-saver. It will be more precise if use raw data from nanovna. I not know how to nanovna works, I see QRP firmware has a scanraw command. I think this is what we need. I think raw option is useful, but not for all user. So checkbox required.

I have calibration errors, i will send it next message. For calibration, interpolation beetween real calibration causes a strange error.

Lajos

Hi Kurt,

Thanks for the detailed reply and your other post on wvna calibration method. Very useful for me.

I use female open, not male open, not a big difference, but i not know why this error exist.

#86: On the Results of Measuring Two-Ports Using Only [NanoVNA] Channel [CH0]:

Hello,

Allow us, please, to announce that just we also additionally realized, in our sow,
the following simple facts, always facupov, of course, and thus we just upgraded
our previous division of the values involved in "Measuring Two-Ports Using Only
[NanoVNA] Channel [CH0]" and now : "or a [LeastVNA]", as follows:

- - - - - - (c) gin&pez@arg (cc-by-4.0) 2019 : start - - - - - -

(0) All values are expressed as (complex) (couples of) rational numbers of finite
length, but we can divide them to three 3 different sets, according to their different
origin, form, and precision :

(1) The set of nominal values of the three 3 Standards S, L, O, as they are given
by their manufacturer in the usual form of { -1, 0, +1 }. These numbers are exact.

(2) The set of 4 measured values : { s, l, o, g }, in the form provided by the
manufacturer of [NanoVNA], his current version of the updated firmware, or the
[LeastVNA] in use. These numbers are of fixed precision.

(3) The set of finally computed values, that is either the { S12S21, S22, G }
or just the {G} alone. The form of these numbers, as well as their precision,
which nowadays may be arbitrarily high and limited only by the available
application, computer memory, and run time, are defined by The Common User.

Simple example of interfacing Octave with nanoVNA #octave

Using the matlab script from QRP I created a rough Octave script.

The script can send commands to the nanoVNA and read S11 and S21
Nothing special but it works.....

Not really; Octave Forge has some signal processing

creatingrf [@] gmail.com has some RF support for Octave:

Re: Increasing measurement range (ohms) ?

Hi Alan,

I did some modelling and there are quite a few places where errors can creep in. I was a little surprised on the significance of Tx driver source impedance and balanced Rx output loading impedance have. It will take more analysis to understand what can be calibrated out.

The excitation driving source impedance has a resistor attenuator pad to improve the source impedance control but a compromise must be made on the tolerable drive signal loss. The capacitance of the synthesizer driver output and input of the SA612 effect high frequency end.

The sophistication of the calibration correction algorithm may be an area to examine as the correction algorithm for low Z measurements can be different from high Z measurement. How you might interpolate calibration points may depend on what is creating the errors, resistor matching, absolute resistor values, and/or stray reactance. At low freq end stray reactance effects are minimal but may have to begin to worry about spurious mixing products not being attenuated enough by LPF effecting ADC readings.

But this is a low cost 'hobbyist' unit. I would like to see a better synthesizer IC and mixer IC but that would run up cost. I have a NanoVNA, NavoVNA-F, and N1201SA unit. I like the N1201SA with its better AD4351 synthesizer chip and high frequency capability but it is limited on low freq end and doesn't seem to have open source code available. My N1201SA was built with AD4351 chip which could go down to 35 MHz but firmware stops it at 137.5 MHz as if it has the AD4350 chip. I would definitely go for the extra bucks of the NanoVNA-F over the original NanoVNA. The -F has 5v boosted supply for mixers where the original NanoVNA runs directly from 5v USB that drops to LiIon battery voltage when USB supply ls not connected. The -F also has the more powerful M3 processor and extra flash memory along with several other improvements including a real housing.

Re: Homebrew Female SMA standards and T-Check

Hi Allison
Sure they will work fien with thee NanoVNA as the difference in offset delay is very small as the NanoVNA is designed for ideal calibration kit except the open is compensated by 50fF. But you are not calibrating to the calibration plane of the Female adaptor of the NanoVNA or the Male adaptor at the end of the test cable if using a such. However the Display/Scale/Electrical delay in the NanoVNA can fix it if you enter the offset delay of the male versus female short.
Kind regards
Kurt

One last, many of the HP loads are air, the most often home made open and short are PTFE loaded, there is a VF difference.

The HP load is definately air (minimal dielectric) to the resistance.
The open and short are for my set air.

I have them to calibrate the HP4191A I have and work well for the nanovna.

Hugen,

What will be the price of the new version? And when it comes out, will the older version still be available?

Re: Homebrew Female SMA standards and T-Check

Hi Rudi,

The MATLAB T-check script is part of a package of scripts written by Dick Benson, W1QG, and downloadable from the Matlab Central:

Please note that it requires MATLAB's "RF Toolbox", so I do not know if it is compatible with Octave. Give it a try, maybe it will work.

And note that the T-check script works with an S2P file.

Best of luck!

Re: Homebrew Female SMA standards and T-Check

Allison, Dave, and Kurt, many thanks for your replies.

Dave -- thank you very much for the "flush thru" description. That explains a lot, and it was a key bit of info that I lacked.

Kurt -- I'll attempt some accurate characterization when I return home (I am "on the road" at the moment). I found some APC-7 terminated airline in the back of a drawer a few days ago, so that should help me characterize C0. Thanks very much for your advice.

Allison -- I am intrigued as to how you are using your 4191A. I have one, too, but I've been using it with the stock fixture. Am I correct in assuming your are adapting its APC-7 to an SMA cable, and then making your measurements at the end of that cable? And where are you defining your reference plane?

Again, thanks to all.

Re: My nanoVNA does't go into DFU mode #improvement

I would like to thank all the replies to my initial message. Unfortunatelly, the firmware was an old one that didn't allow me to go into a config menu. I also made sure to jumper the boot0 and Vcc.

In the meantime, I had a great assistance from Igor, PY3IG, who told me to install the proper Win10 driver. Once done, everything else went smoothly. My hats off to Igor for his assistance and Youtube videos.

Re: My nanoVNA does't go into DFU mode #improvement

Windows 10 has the drivers on board, not necessary to run Zadig. The device should show up under "Ports (Com? & LPT)" as "Serial USB Device (COM3)" eg ,? NOT under "Serial Bus-Controllers". if so DELETE the drivers there. Then connect the device to an USB port, the drivers will be installed on the right place automatically. Then run DFUse to flash the firmware.

Success

I received a nanoVNA last week and tried to upgrade it. I ran Zadig and updated the drive according to Zadig's default suggestion.
Once done, I sort circuited the boot0 and Vcc terminals, connected the USB cable to my computer running Win10, but couldn't see it in DFU mode under Device Manager. Am I missing something?
I did installed the D2 diode before all that so to have a battery level on display.

Hi Oscar,

Use it and don't worry about being a clone or not a clone.
If Hugen hadn't cloned from edy555, you wouldn't have to worry now.
By the way, everyone works from a set, if there is a difference, it is revenge of the scrap.
