Ski Club Update
4
I want to let you know there may be a pretty simple way to set up the Ski Club as a non-profit entity without going through a bunch of paper work and hoops. It sounds good to me. Before we go down this road I wanted to check in to see if there is support for this idea, We may be able to become an affiliate of St. John's here on the Island. There is some precedent for this. As you probably know, Woods Hall is an entity of St. John's and gets the non-profit status from that relationship. I have talked to some leaders at St. John's and the response from them was very positive, but this would need to be approved by the full Council. I have written a proposal for the St. John's council that is attached.Their next meeting is March 11. Before I send it to St. John's council for their consideration, please respond with your input thoughts. Also, Ken Myhre has been keeping track of the time and expense to groom the trails so we have a baseline to know how much effort and expense is needed. Thanks Marty Vadis

Backyard and Golf Course trails both groomed today. Had to wait a long time for that new snow, but now both trails are in great shape and ready for action. If anyone skis the North End trail this week please report condition so I know when to run out there to re-groom. Enjoy!

Backyard and Golf Course trails groomed today. Both look great. Marnie reports that North End trail is still good, but warm weekend has exposed more wet spots, so come on cold and snow!

North End loop trail (3.9 miles) groomed today. Beautiful out there, and trail should be good all week. Good time to give it a try!

North end

Ken, Went in on North End trail today with sleds & chainsaws. Ronnie Nelson along with me. Poked in at Kromroy path towards engine block. Cleared that deadfall on Kromroy outlet and the big monster tree beyond that. Bunch of small stuff as well. Then sledded in to Big Swamp and turned around back out to Kromroy outlet. Burroughs trailhead to engine block looked dicey so didn¡¯t go in that way. Then went to back to Burroughs trailhead and sledded in about 1.5 miles the other direction on the trail. Wet conditions both ways but you can get in there on the sled. Middle mile of the short loop still an unknown...plan to get in there over the next week on ¡®shoes and see what¡¯s going on. Owe Ronnie some beers!...he took down most of that big monster! Ann went in with us as well with clipper & machete and cleared more small stuff. Now we just need some cold weather & fresh snow. Will update after in there next. Ol Haus

Both Backyard and Golf Course trails entirely groomed today, and they are in great shape. Amazing how wet it still is in the woods and on the course, but we¡¯ve been able to fill in snow in rough spots and re-route around the worst spot, so for now, we are entirely open and ready for weekend action. Happy Trails, Ken

Trail Report 12/31
Trail Report 12/31 Good news and bad news to close out 2019. First, the good news ... Both trails (Backyard and Golf Course) are packed, (mostly) tracked, and ready for a New Year¡¯s ski! Then the bad news ... The back loop on the Backyard Trail has a long stretch of standing water that almost got me while packing. For now I¡¯d recommend sticking with what is tracked, though it might be possible to skirt the wet area with skis. We need some cold weather to firm things up before that portion of the trail can be groomed going forward. Happy Trails, Ken

Trail Report for 12/23 Backyard and Golf Course trails groomed this morning and ready for holiday action. Get to ¡®em before the deer do! See trail detail below. I tried to clear Capser Trail yesterday but it is a mess. Made it only to Wilderness Park before running out of steam. Happy trails, all!

Trail Report for 12/3/2019 As of 2:00 this afternoon the golf course trail is packed and will be ready to groom tomorrow morning! Only got stuck once, but it was a classic bury-job. So much snow, so soft and light, makes it very hard to climb any real hills, and though I suspected as much, had to find out the hard way. I¡¯ll plan to groom the trail for classic skiing first thing in the morning, so here we go 2019/2020 ski season! Happy trails, Ken

Madeline Island Ski Club folks, Great meeting tonight at the library, and minutes to follow, but one bothersome item to clean up. Some folks who had replied to confirm their membership in this group message format haven¡¯t been receiving some posts, so can I ask a quick favor: Would everyone who receives this message send a quick, brief reply so I can confirm who is and who isn¡¯t getting these message posts? Thank you! Ken

Meeting on Wednesday, 12/4
Reminder: Meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) night, 12/4, 6:30-7:30 in the library! Please spread the word. Also, if anyone is able, please get onto the Backyard Trail with snowshoes and check for downed trees. We're going to try to get onto it with snowmobiles later in the week, but with all the snow, some packing now by foot would help. Please let Keith or Ken know if you find large trees downed on the trail so we can plan cleanup detail. Also, if you haven't already registered on the groups.ioMadeline Island Nordic Ski Club site, please consider doing that to improve our ability to communicate going forward. Winter is here! Marnie and Ken

Our Meeting on December 4
3
One of the chief benefits of this groups.io format is the ability it offers to engage everyone in dialogue over our common xc skiing interests. On that note, now that we've agreed the ski club is a good idea, can we begin to share and discuss topics in advance of our next meeting on December 4? We should discuss membership itself. What should that look like? One basic membership level for everyone? More than one level? How will we go about setting, collecting, and managing dues generated by membership contribution? How will we spend that money? After grooming the golf course trail and helping with the other trails last year, I have some experience with expenses related to grooming. I'd also like to hear from others about what they'd like to see in terms of the design of the golf course trail this year. Last year I worked hard to establish a skate track next to the classic track, but I don't think there are many skaters on the island yet and because it takes three times the time and energy to groom the skate track as opposed to the classic, I'm planning to begin with just a classic track on the golf course. I'm also planning to eliminate grooming a trail on the first couple of holes, those most exposed to the wind off the lake. Any other trail design thoughts? Also like to share a bit of good news. Bob Hartzell has graciously agreed to let us groom a trail from the golf course to the backyard trail by his rental units on the 5th fairway, just a kick and a glide down from Candi's house, and I've already physically cleared the way to doing that, so as soon as we get some snow we'll give that a try as well. Thank you, Bob! Your thoughts? What else should we talk about next week? Thinking snow, Ken

Welcome!

Hello Madeline Island xc skiers and ski ambassadors, and thanks for signing on. Let the ski club/trail talk begin! I proposed this format vs. Facebook to include more people in our discussions and make it easy to broadcast club news. Emails and replies sent to our email address: [email protected] reach everyone who has registered. Let¡¯s give it a try and see how well it works? I¡¯ve also created, but not launched, a private Facebook club page, but I worry that might complicate things for now? Snow coming down sideways across our front yard as I type this. Won¡¯t be long now until we are on those trails! Think snow, Ken
