The one thing that we do know that everyone will be celebrating is the end of 2020! It has been far too long since we have been able to get together (or at least see all of everyone's face in person!) Please remain safe so that we'll all be able to be together soon.
Wishing all of our Southern Region folks peace and health in the coming new year!

Southern Region To Offer Clubs Funding For Shows
|
|
Clubs are beginning to have "in person" shows again. Cotton States and Cat Club of the Palm Beaches both had very successful shows in November and December. However, as of this writing shows are not able to have spectators - and they are a large source of revenue for many shows.
After looking at the region's finances, the Regional Committee decided that the region would award $500 for Southern Region clubs holding shows from now through the end of the 2020-21 show season. This is specifically to help offset that lost revenue stream and will be sent to the club after the show is held. This is to avoid funds being sent to a club and then back to the region should the show be forced to cancel.

Cat Club of the Palm Beaches Show
|
|
submitted by Karen Lane
Cat Club of the Palm Beaches held their first cat show, live and in person, since the Covid pandemic of 2020 on December 5th and 6st. The entry limit for our show was 150 cats, in order that we bench our cats and allow ¡°social distancing¡± between our exhibitors. The show allowed no spectators, just our cats and their owners/handlers. Everyone¡¯s temperature was taken before entering the show hall and everyone wore their masks, not the cats, just the humans.?
We have a great number of people to thank for the success of this show. We live in Florida and our Governor has opened our state to almost normal, of course masks and distancing are required. The city of Sanford was kind and gracious and allowed us to be in their civic center. We filled our entry and our exhibitors followed all of the rules that were required for the safety of each other. It was strange with no spectators but it also allowed all of us to enjoy being together, with our cats, and renewing our friendships with each other. It seemed like ages since we all were together last.?
Our wonderful judges, Don Williams, Bob Goltzer, Carol Fogarty, Russell Webb, Kenny Currle, Hope Gonano, and, we secured the permission of CFA to invite two judges from TICA, Clint and Rene Knapp, Having judges from TICA was a wonderful opportunity for us to see new judges and have them handle our cats. All of our judges managed to do their job with masks on and most of the cats did not seem to notice that they looked like ¡°bank robbers¡±. It has been a long time since our cats had been have been to a show and handled, and some of our cats were almost a year old and this was their first show, our judges took the extra time when needed to make the cats feel comfortable.?
Cotton States was gracious to share all of their experience after having their show three weeks before us. They also shared thermometers, masks and wrist bands with us, and lots of ideas. Vicki Nye donated masks for our show and gave us guidance as we were going to be in ¡°uncharted waters¡± with all of the new requirements needed to have a fun and safe weekend.
|
|
There was one particular highlight of our show, I want to share. Some people who had been to our show in past years, stopped by the show hall as they were downtown, Sanford, and saw us at the Civic Center. Of course they wanted to come in and see the cats, but unfortunately we were closed to the public. They were so nice about their disappointment, we suggested that they come around to the large windows in the show hall and we would be happy to let them see some of the cats. The really was an emotional experience seeing people who really wanted and enjoyed seeing our cats and stand outside and pet our cats through the glass windows.?
Our first Covid show was a success and we are hoping to have another show in February, if possible. Our club members rose to the occasion and did the temperature taking, wrist banding, waiver fill out and greeted everyone just like it was Christmas. What a wonderful way to start the holiday season.?

Longtime Southern Region exhibitor Sandi Lewis was recently hospitalized due to a stroke. She is now home after completing her physical therapy and doing well. Many of you will remember her both as a Scottish Fold breeder/exhibitor, and for all of the hard work that she contributed for years on the regional awards banquets' booklets and posters.
Perhaps take a moment and drop her a card or give her a call. Her address is 153 Mill Acres Dr, Lynchburg VA 24503

Winter Fire Safety Precautions
|
|
Pam DelaBar
The weather gets a bit cooler - cold actually - in the Northern Hemisphere and we all spend more time indoors, in our homes.?This time of year, especially during the holidays, we increase the demands on our electrical systems with our seasonal decorations and holiday baking. Decorative candles and toasty fireplaces bring joy and warmth
These things that can be so comforting and inviting can turn into our worst nightmare.
Within the past month, two catteries in CFA Region 9 (Europe) have experienced horrible tragedies:
Yury Novitskiy and his wife Irina Barkovskaya of Sybarit Cattery, well known throughout CFA for excellent Exotics, were awakened by, literally, their house burning down around them.?They lost everything: clothing, furniture, currency, credit cards, identification, home, and the cattery - all the cats and kittens perished in the fire.?Irina is still hospitalized in a specialized burn unit with both internal and external injuries from the fire.
The same situation occurred with the family of Elena ¡°Cattery Darlen Fleur¡±, well known Abyssinian breeder in Europe?- they also were awakened by fire and lost almost everything, including all winter clothing (winters are not kind in Russia) - and all female Abyssinians and their kittens perished.
Elena¡¯s fire was possibly caused by a failure in the electrical system somewhere in the house.?Yury and Irina¡¯s fire started somewhere between the first and second floors of the home within the chimney.
What can we do to hopefully prevent this in our own homes??
- Ensure the batteries in our fire alarms are fresh and the alarms are in working order
- Lessen the load on our electrical systems (LED lights do not tax the systems as much as regular lights),?
- Check the pilot lights on gas appliances to make sure they stay lit
- Water our fresh Christmas trees with WARM water
- Use electronic flickering candles instead of the ones with real flames
- Get the local chimney sweep out to clean the chimney (and never burn paper or soft wood in the fireplace).??
Make a plan how you and your family can evacuate your home in case of a fire, and include your cats and other pets in the plan.
If you can help, donations can be made to Yury Novitskiy and Irina Barkovskaya through PayPal at CFA.Region9@....?Collections for Elena can be received at .

Ever wondered about the history of cat breeds originating from South-East Asia, how the tabby got it¡¯s stripes, or how many points are allocated to the Persian head type? With back to school in full swing, it is a great time to ¡°hit the books¡± with your feline education. There are a plethora of education materials available on the web from registry, veterinary, breeder and enthusiast websites.
Have you ever really investigated CFA's website? The is a treasure trove of information on breeds and breed standards, including the breed presentations used to train judges. Section 11 in the Judging Program Rules applies to continued education requirements. All trainees and judges must accrue twelve (12) continuing education units (CEU¡¯s) over a five (5) year period to continue to be licensed as a CFA Judge. Breed Presentations listed with each breed are one way to earn credit towards their education. The web site also includes information on genetics and cat care as well as links to the Companion Cat World and CFA¡¯s Breed clubs. The website is so much more than just a place to register your cats.
One site for information on a large variety of topics is .?Messybeast is a non-profit library of cat-related resources. It is not affiliated to any registry, breed society, veterinary association or welfare society. This is a great place for information on color genetics and breed histories.
is an online magazine with many free and some members only related articles on everything from breed history, color genetics, to raising premature kittens, to grooming and showing. I learned how I can build an IKEA bed to give my ¡°kids¡± a new place to sleep and play.
Several veterinary schools have wonderful websites with many feline health related topics. and are two great sources.?You can even sign up to take a virtual class on pet CPR and find out the latest information on Covid 19 and cats.
The advances feline health by supporting research and education. They sponsor webinars that anyone can attend about feline health topics as well as a library of podcasts from their previous Feline Education Events.
These are just a small sample of resources to grow your knowledge on cats. Enjoy finding new things to learn to enhance your appreciation of the feline.

It is with disappointment that we have made the decision to temporarily close the Feline Historical Museum for six months effective December 11, 2020. Stark County, where Alliance is located, has been elevated to a PURPLE status, and we feel that we need to close the museum for the safety of both our visitors and staff.
We will re-evaluate during the next few months, depending upon how plans to reduce the COVID-19 virus work out in the United States. We do plan to re-open in the summer of 2021 when it is totally safe to do so.
Our museum manager, Karen Lawrence, will be returning to her home in Canada, and will take care of museum management duties from home for the next six months. We¡¯ll still be in touch through updates to our social media sites and various web sites.?If you need to reach Karen, please note a new Canadian cell phone number ¨C 289-929-7554. She can also be reached by email at info@....
We thank everyone for their continued support of the museum, and hope we can be in your travel plans come summer of 2021.
Wear your mask ¡ stay safe and healthy during the upcoming holiday season!

Texas Agency Reviews Rules for the Licensed Breeder Program
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is undergoing a state-mandated review of its rules for the Licensed Breeder Program. This is a routine four-year undertaking required of state agencies that is different than the sunset review process discussed in the July 2020 issue of . The sunset review process evaluates agency and program effectiveness every 12 years. It was this process that lead to the Commission's recommendation of abolishing the Licensed Breeder Program. That review process is still underway. For those interested, public comments on the Commission¡¯s recommendations are located .
Unlike the Sunset Commission review of program efficacy, TDLR reviews the program's rules to determine whether to readopt, revise, or repeal the rules. The agency assesses whether the rules are obsolete, reflect current legal and policy considerations, and aligns with departmental procedures. TDLR cannot change the law underlying the regulations in this process. The Licensed Breeders Administrative Rules are in Title 16, Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 91, available online .?Comments can be submitted . The deadline for comments is December 21, 2020.

We have again lost another beloved member of our cat fancy. Barbara Callison passed away due to the Covid-19 virus. As Kim Everett Hirsch stated it so well ¡°Barbara was one of the most determined people that I have ever known. They had 83 entries and this was pretty good under the hard situation of Covid-19. Their first show had big success.
|
|
|
Nishinihon Cat Club had their traditional Christmas show at Osaka as usual. The club prepared all things for protect us from the risk of Covid-19.??Entry was 63.
At the both of show halls, exhibitors did their best to protect themselves with face shields and masks.
|
|
We will have two more shows in Tokyo: on December 13 and the last weekend of December.
We wish we will have no infected person later.
Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!

The Winter Cat Show, sponsored by Purina Proplan, Russia, was a virtual competition conducted on 5-6 December.?What made the event unique was it was a collaborative effort with the sponsor and five cat associations:?CFA, FIFe, WCF, AFC (Russian), and ICU (Russian), and that Zoom technology was used in evaluating the entries.
|
|
The sponsor supplied a specific technology expert to each ring and worked to coordinate the overall competition with the five organizations.?A translator was available to assist judges in having the exhibitors handle their cat to show the different attributes.?Judges were also able to communicate their evaluation of the cat to the exhibitor.?No awards or titles were given in each judging, but each judge did present a top ten final (ranking) for kittens, championship, and premiership.?On Sunday, each association nominated its top kitten, cat, and premiership cat to compete with the other association¡¯s top in each category.?One judge from each association was picked for the top competition judging panel.?The nominees were presented ¡°live¡± by Zoom for evaluation by the judges.?A lovely Bengal kitten won overall Best Kitten, a red and white Persian neuter (nominated by CFA) was overall Best Neuter/Spay, and a very flashy copper-eyed white Persian male (a CFA nomination) was honored as Best Cat.
Edelweiss Cat Club worked with the ¡°live¡± technology and developed a very smooth running system.?Three minutes was allotted to each entry and both judges and exhibitors had a time to expect the judging for any specific exhibit.?The exhibit numbers for finals were sent to the ¡°master clerk¡± so that the exhibitors were available for the finals presentations.?The CFA judges - Sharon Roy, Irina Kharchenko, Teo Vargas-Huesa, and Pam DelaBar - all agreed this was a very well run competition, highly professional, and was a much more interesting experience than ranking photographs.?Well done, Edelweiss Cat Club.
The last Region 9 CFA show for 2020 was held in Yl?j?rvi, Finland.?This show, hosted by Sophisto Cat Club, was the third 2-ring show conducted in the October-November timeframe and joined with the Sherwood Manx club and Cat Fanciers of Finland for this ¡°trifecta¡± - all shows met and exceeded COVID19 requirements set by both national and regional authorities (we do joke that Finns invented social distancing). Several cats were able to complete their requirements for the champion or premier titles, and we had some new grands as well.
Our last Region 9 Zoom meeting for 2020 was held 8 December to discuss topics from the CFA board meeting 1 December and also to project what we need to continue to expand CFA in Europe.?We signed off with a toast (with a favorite beverage or two) for good health and prosperity in the New Year.?We pass on our best wishes for all of CFA to stay safe and stay healthy and hope to see everyone at a show in 2021.

China is moving forward and now we have many approved NGO cat shows. The clubs in China are working very hard on promoting the CFA shows in the different districts in China.
Our Team One judges are doing a fantastic job in judging the cats at the shows. I have been sent quite a few videos from the different shows and there handling is fine and they do present the cats in a professional manner. Congratulations to them all.
Last but not least our WeChat program is moving along nicely. I think once this is completed it will make the entry clerk job much easier.

The Dear Meow club conducted a CFA show on November 14 in Hong Kong. Following the government gathering instructions and restrictions, and Hong Kong government laws and regulations of social distancing, the club set?an entry limit of 50.
|
|
|
All the owners wore a mask in the show hall. All those who attended filled out the CFA Covid-19 declaration form and emailed it to the entry clerk along with the entry form. At the show hall, the check in counter had the visitors declaration form regarding their whereabouts in the past 14 days and the temperature of those entering was checked.
|
|
The club provided masks and hand sanitizer for the exhibitors. We also had an air dehumidifier in the show hall.
Kit Fung (above) and Suki Lee (right) were doing the SSP rings.

China Associate Judges - It's Official!
Approved China Associate Judges
|
|
CONGRATULATIONS!
In June 2020, a radical new experiment was begun in CFA called the China Associate Judge Program that we hoped would be a success, both in bringing new talent to the judging rings in China, new ways to train using the most modern technology, and keeping us active in areas that are challenged with judge availability.?
A small group of ten Chinese candidates from diverse areas and affiliations within CFA were selected. They each received an invitation to go through the program. All ten accepted the challenge and named themselves ¡°Team One¡± or T1. Today, we are proud to announce that all ten candidates have successfully completed the rigorous training and testing conducted by Committee Chair Anne Mathis and her committee, and?all ten?have been approved by the CFA Board of Directors to advance to the status of?CFA Associate Judge.
Congratulations to the following CFA Associate Judges:
Gavin Cao - LH Associate Judge (Approved CFA SH Judge)
Yi Chang - LH Associate Judge
Eva Chen - LH Associate Judge
Howe Gao - SH Associate Judge
Chris Li - SH Associate Judge
Katherine Liu - SH Associate Judge
Allen Shi - SH Associate Judge
Agnes Sun - LH Associate Judge
Mulin Yang - LH Associate Judge
Kitty Jie Zhang - SH Associate Judge
Here are a few helpful pieces of information about CFA Associate Judges (note Gavin Cao is an Approved CFA Shorthair judge, so this applies only to his LH Associate Judge status):
-
These individuals will be?Associate?CFA judges, not CFA judges.
- They will be approved to judge in China ONLY.
- They come in as single specialty, which means that the shows in China will have a lot of specialty rings!
- IF they choose to take the next step to become a regular CFA judge they will apply using provisions as broken out in the Judging Program Rules section 3.8.
- There must be at least one regular CFA Judge at every show.
When the Program began, no one had a crystal ball and no one could have imagined that borders would still be closed and tremendous challenges would still exist with show production. Our Associate Judges can now fill a need that we are sure will surprise everyone. Please join the CFA Board of Directors in congratulating our new Associate Judges. We wish them continued success!

The 2020 CURES4CATS Campaign is Underway!
|
|
The fourth annual Cures4Cats Day, Saturday, October 17, kicked off our end of the year giving campaign. This year's campaign theme will recognize the significance of diabetes mellitus in cats.
Diabetes is a common and growing malady affecting cats much like their cat loving humans. Approximately one in every 230 cats will develop diabetes during their lifetime?and this is expected to increase by 18% over the next ten-years.?
?
This Cures4Cats campaign aims to educate, engage, and encourage our donors and partners to help more than ever to find better and more effective treatments for this disease. Raising funds for further research will enable improvements in diabetic cats¡¯ longevity and quality of life.
The campaign will continue through December 31, 2020 and this year our goal is $15,000! We also have a matching fund up to $15,000! For more information about Feline Diabetes, CURES4CATS, or to make a donation, click the button!

?Planned Giving Tips
By George Eigenhauser
|
|
Many companies have programs for their employees to make charitable contributions through payroll deduction at work.?Charitable giving through these programs makes donations simple, easy, and automatic and makes your record-keeping a breeze.?Just keep a copy of your W-2 or other document furnished by your employer that shows the total withheld for charitable donation.?You should also keep a copy of the pledge card that shows the name of the charity.?For federal workers (civilian, postal and military) you may make charitable donations through the Combined Federal Campaign.?State, county, and municipal employees may be able to participate through similar charitable giving programs.?A few private companies even match employee contributions (up to a limit) to qualified nonprofits.?If your employer participates in donation matching you can double the impact of your gift without you giving another cent. Check with your employer to find out if they have a charitable giving program and how you can participate.?
