The CFA International Top Cat Challenge is a series of virtual cat competitions sponsored by CFA and the regions who choose to help spread the love of our hobby online during these unprecedented times. There are regional virtual qualifying events currently underway, and the culmination of the series is the International show, in which cats that have qualified (by entering the regional qualifiers) will be invited to enter the International. Cats who finish in the top 10 in their classes at the regional level will receive $2 off their entry into the International, and cats that are best in their class at the regional level receive a free entry. The regions have many other amazing prizes available also that have been donated to them by their regional exhibitors and clubs.

There is also a video-only portion to the International that does not require qualification, wherein you create a 30 second video of you handling your cat mimicking the way a judge would. of how to make a video submission for a Virtual Cat Competition!?

There will be 8 judges for the photo (invitational) event, and 8 judges for the video event. There will also be several fun rings judged by CFA celebrities. The proceeds of this event will be donated to the WINN Feline Foundation.?

Date of Sale for Kittens – be sure the DATE OF SALE on a blue slip, yellow slip or individual registration section of a litter application is filled in to indicate when the new owner(s) takes possession of the kitten. Please do not leave this section blank.

Email – even if you submit your paperwork the old-fashioned way through regular mail, please include an email address so we can contact you with any questions. Indicate If you wish to have mailed documents versus email.

Payment – it might sound obvious, but be sure to include payment (if not done online) and don’t send cash.

Best Practices regarding holding a show during the COVID pandemic .

COVID Waiver – all attendees at a CFA show, including judges, exhibitors, agents, vendors, clerks, stewards, volunteers, club members, etc. will be required to sign a COVID waiver upon entering the show facility. The waiver is available for advance review and for printing .

In May 2020, in response to the shut-down of shows due to the pandemic, the CFA Board of Directors conducted an exhibitor survey with 1,033 respondents.?Award options were presented.?The overwhelming choice was:?Award titles using all points and rings earned regardless of owner’s region of residence - this is the current scoring system. Titles being awarded include Regional Winner (RW), Champion (CH), Premier (PR), Grand Champion (GRC), Grand Premier (GRP), Grand Household Pet (GH), Grand of Distinction, Regional Breed Winner, Distinguished Merit (DM) and Champion/ Premier tiered titles. National Winner (NW) and National Breed Winner (BW) titles would not be awarded. This scoring method was adopted at the May 20, 2020 teleconference.

At the October 3/4, 2020 CFA Board Meeting, the following motion was made and seconded, and a lengthy discussion was had: Regional Awards, for all regions, will be suspended for Show Season 2020-2021.?Motion Carried. Currle, Anger, Dunham, Krzanowski, Byrd and Mastin voting no. Roy abstained.?

After the board meeting, the following online motion was made, seconded and carried on October 12, 2020:?Rescind the CFA Board decision to eliminate RW awards for the 2020-2021 season. Motion Carried. Calhoun, Colilla, DelaBar, Eigenhauser, McCullough, Morgan, B. Moser and P. Moser voting no.?The CFA Attorney has opined that this motion will be ratified at the November 10, 2020 teleconference.

Therefore, the May 2020 scoring system remains in place.?A follow-up survey is being composed by a team consisting of Cyndy Byrd, Kathy Calhoun and Vicki Nye to gather current data to achieve scientific, controlled results which the board members can use in formulating the best approach possible to our current challenges.?Please be on the look-out for an informational announcement about that survey and plan to participate.?Your opinion matters and is valuable to the decision-making process.

Congratulations to the winners of the first Regional Virtual Qualifying Event, hosted by the Great Lakes Region, which boasted 442 entries and over $2000 towards the CFA 2022 Annual fund, as well as $724 in Spectator's Choice votes for The Euclid Beach Cat Project. The Great Lakes did a fabulous job with professional presentations, which can be seen on the region's .

The Southern Regional qualifier closed on 10/12 with 368 entries. We look forward to watching their results!

The October issue of Cat Talk should be hitting our readers' mailboxes any day now (and on the digital platforms as well). Our traditional October is "Homecoming," a word with a multitude of meanings. This issue, we look at life with a senior cat and some of the challenges with that.

The Global Egyptian Mau Society just completed judging on CFA’s very first Breed-Specialty Virtual Cat Competition.?The show was open to Egyptian Maus only.??The event was a global competition from start to finish with 208 Egyptian Mau entries from 14 different countries representing cats from multiple registries.?The quality of entries resulted in tough competition in all five of the classes and 107 of the 208 entries made finals!

Judging was conducted in 5 completive classes: Maulets for kittens under the age of 4 months, Kittens for entries between the ages of 4 and 8 months, Championship and Alters for unaltered and alerted cats respectively over the age of 8 months, and Pets, which included non-Championship colors/patterns. Melanie Morgan, Gary Veach, Sharon Roy, and Yanina Vanwonterghem awarded Top 10 placements in Maulets, Kittens, and Championship, Top 15 in Alters, and Top 5 in the Pet class. Liz Watson judged Best of the Best which included the Top 3 Highest Scoring Maulets, Kittens, championship cats and alters.

The support and outcome of this undertaking is a true testament to the quality and dedication of the Egyptian Mau breeders, fanciers, and owners around the global.

This unusual year made it easy to lose track of state bills and local ordinances. The usual procedures would change unexpectedly leaving everyone – from lawmakers to the public – scrambling to adjust to the monkey wrenches thrown at legislative processes. Legislative priorities quickly focused the limited time and resources on pandemic related legislation with animal bills largely limited to time-sensitive topics. Some measures were enacted while others were simply not heard regardless of need, merit, or improbability.

Many of the 2020 bills or ordinances were retail pet store proposals prohibiting or restricting the sale of cats, dogs, and rabbits on the theory of eliminating “inhumane” breeding. In California, these addressed specific problems that had arisen with enforcement of previously enacted legislation. California Assembly Bill 2152 was signed by the Governor and removes the option for stores to legally acquire “rescue” animals but added express provisions for “showcasing” by public agencies and shelters with a newly narrowed definition for “animal rescue” groups. The state of Colorado, as well as local jurisdictions located therein, Fairplay and Silverthorne, also considered the issue. There were also bills considered in Florida, Kansas, and Naperville, Illinois. The Naperville ordinance allows pet stores to only sell dogs and cats obtained from or displayed in cooperation with humane or welfare organizations or animal rescue groups and revised the rescue definition to exclude relationships with breeders or brokers to deter use of fraudulent rescue groups as happened in Chicago and California.

Evanston, Illinois went further than a pet shop ban by prohibiting sales of cats and dogs from all but USDA licensed breeders. There was no exemption for hobby breeders.

The New Hampshire pet vendor definition thresholds were once again the subject of legislation this year.

Georgia considered a bill that would have required surety bonds of up to $500,000 for all pet dealers. The March 2020 issue of What’s Hot explains why this would include anyone having a single litter.

Honolulu, Hawaii adopted a mandatory microchip ordinance.

As usual, there were bills relating to animal cruelty. One of these was the Florida Allie’s Law bill that would have mandated veterinarians report animal cruelty. Note that a number of states do mandate veterinarian reporting, some just allow it and some have no law at all.

In 2002, the George Sydney and Phyllis Redman Miller Trust designated Winn Feline Foundation as one of its advisor organizations. Winn has subsequently been provided an unprecedented opportunity to make annual recommendations for grant awards to the San Francisco Foundation, trustees of the Miller Trust. The total grant funding varies each year, and this year, the amount was $137,720. On October 6th, 2020, Winn Feline Foundation’s Board of Directors, along with 10 Primary Grant Reviewers and 3 Scientific advisors, met to review 13 submitted grant proposals and determine which proposals to recommend to the San Francisco Foundation for funding. We have no news to report this month. Most of us are still sequestered due to the ongoing Pandemic. We do however send our thoughts and prayers to those of us living in the path of the horrible hurricanes and torrential fires.

The Nishinihon Cat Show in Osaka on August second this year was his last job. In the midst of the pandemic of COVID, he, with his last power, encouraged us, cat fanciers, to do our best.

I would like to congratulate him on his many wonderful achievements as an ambassador of CFA Japan. My fond memory with him was at the Japan Pet Fair, he enjoyed the large audience of tens of thousands of people and fascinated and entertained people. Raptor was embraced by the audience, let them touch his wonderful coat without hesitation, and conveyed the characteristics of cats and the wonders of life with cats. Many cat fanciers were born thanks to him.

His booth was always decorated with the American flag, the hometown of American Shorthair, and he became the top star with his wonderful appearance and personality as a representative of American cats. Whenever there was a show, Raptor with his beloved partner went to work and guided beginners comfortably and kindly, and invited people to see what a wonderful event the cat show was.

Sadly, it was time for God to reach out to Raptor to cross the Rainbow to rest forever.?The time has come Raptor was dignified to the end and was held in the lap of his beloved partner and went to sleep while talking about his memories. Thank you Raptor.

Region 9 Europe is looking forward to starting shows; the first will be a two ring show in Ylojarvi, Finland on 18 October.?Several of our countries and areas have limits on the number of people allowed at any gathering, so show production has been difficult to plan.?Additionally, our judges are in several different countries which may require up to fourteen days quarantine if coming in from a “red zone”.

We are looking forward to sharing photographs from our first Finnish show and the first show for the Sherwood Manx club.?We will additionally have two more 2 ring shows in the same facility in Ylojarvi, Finland in November.

We are so lucky and very fortunate to be able to pair with the North Atlantic Region for the Regional Qualifying Virtual Event - appropriately named Paws Across the Sea!?And I bet both regional directors will have something to brag about when the events are completed.

The first CFA Show in Asia was held on September 5, 2020 in Bangkok, Thailand.?Organized in cooperation with the Malaysia Cat Fanciers Club.

I’m happy to announce that mainland China has received approval from the NGO and will be putting on the first approved CFA show in October 2020. This is just the beginning more shows to follow in the months ahead.

We also now have 5 new entry clerks to represent the different areas in China. With this new program, all entries for the China shows will be entered in China and will not have to go through Hong Kong. The 5 new entry clerks have gone through a training program and have done well. I wish them all the best and am sure they will do a great job!!

Gavin Cao has been developing a new program for WeChat and I will report on that at a later date.

Lastly I want to thank Gavin Cao and Eva Chen for their help and input in moving mainland China into the future.
