Toner for brother monochrome laser printer #Printing

I’m hoping this draws the attention of Randy Singer. Randy, you’ve been a proponent of Brother printers for years on this list, and many of us are happy campers because of your advice.

My own printing needs are modest, testified to by the first appearance of a “low on toner” warning approximately two years after an enormous carton—containing a new Brother LW5200-DW printer—arrived. addressed to me, at the front desk of the hotel where I was refuged from the Tubbs Fire in Sonoma County in October 2017. Translation: I’ve never purchased a toner cartridge for it.

Should I just call up Jeff Bezos and ask him to send the drone with a new cartridge suspended beneath it, or are there bargains in third party refilled cartridges that will serve me well for the next two years?

Any body else’s thoughts and experiences would be equally welcome, of course,

Jim Robertson

Thanks so much for that prompt reply. Looks as though Carrot Ink is a great source!

Now, I need to figure out why my new-home Macsupportcentral posts and replies aren’t being displayed by macOS Mojave’s Mail.app in threaded fashion. I’ve deleted all references to the old group from my “previous recipients” list in Mail, but obviously I have a bit more housekeeping to do.

I’m not Randy, but I can put in my 2?. I don’t know this printer per se, but laser printers often come with starter cartridges with very much less than a full charge of toner powder. If you use that little over two years then don’t worry too much. If this truly is a starter cartridge, then a “real” one will last you four years or more. Do you really have to aggravate yourself to save a pro rated cost of $5-10 a year? You can afford to wait, then, until you really need it and go to a local Staples or Office Despot and pay full price.

I went the laser printer (Brother MFC9130) route as I print so infrequently, the jets of ink jets dry out and render the printer a brick. And . . . ink isn’t cheap either. The toner powder doesn’t clump up or get unuseable. When I need to print, I turn the printer on and print. No wasted toner/ink to ‘clean the heads’ or wasted time waiting for the cleaning cycle. Being old, time is one thing I don’t have a lot of anymore! 8-D

I found that with three epsons ink jet printers. I have had to throw three away. I also being retired for many years I do very little printing. I switched to canon printers as their printer heads are washable. Have not had to brick any. Canon also update software regularly. They do take some time as you mention and full set of inks often cost as much as the printer. However with printing only few times a week I can afford an few extra minutes.

That is what happened to me. I had the Epson Workforce printers. They did a decent job if I could keep the heads clean. The heads are not removeable like the Canon printers. The only down side to the Brother laser printer is that photos are not nearly as crisp as with the ink jet. However, pictures do render fast.

I’ve found lots of toners on eBay, Amazon, and local classifieds that cost about 30% less than what Staples.ca here wants for a cartridge... The ones I bought were all factory sealed as new, and genuine Lexmark, last me about 6 months or 2-3000 prints! which is more than I get out of $100 of inkjet ink...
