I have a brand-new 13" MacBook Air, and there is no start-up sound! Why do they insist on changing things that aren't broken? Is there any way to get it back? E.E.

Howdy. I've searched for a way to return the start up chime. I miss it and it's so Macintosh iconic that it shouldn't go away. But I haven't found a solution even though there are a number of what seem to be incorrect suggestions floating around the Internet. The least they could do is give us a toggle in Preferences to have, or not have, the chime…

Actually for me, I prefer not to have the sound. Sometimes when I unplug the speaker cable and then plug it back in, the chime still sounds when it shouldn’t which I always found annoying. Just my opinion.

I was kind of thinking that as portable computers ? are sometimes in areas where the BONG wouldn’t be appropriate, possibly the default OFF setting would prevent an embarrassment in an inappropriate setting. I too put in my feedback for an optional chime. The thread about it mentions that most computers made after 2016 don’t have the ability to chime, even with the terminal command suggested.

I have?the sound OFF by default. I only switch it on when I actually want to listen to something. This means I don't normally hear the "bong". I know it's supposed to be diagnostic, but if there's a problem with?startup, I expect it to be obvious?anyway.

My iMac is too old to have that issue. If I mute or turn the volume down all the way, the iMac (late 2012) will remember the state upon reboot. Not a big deal either way as it never goes anywhere. However it would be nice to have a choice on the laptops.

My experience with the chime is different: Bought my MacBook Air in Feb 2019. On opening the lid, MBA not only starts up, but also chimes. It is running Mojave, where it will be staying until I manage to move 32-bit files to an older MacBook Pro.?
As I did nothing to set up the chime sound, I have to believe it was the default setting.?
