SSD Question

I'm buying a new M2 MacBook Air and thought I would also replace my external HDD. I currently have a 1 TB WD HDD 5400 RPM and it¡¯s about 6 years old. My thought is to replace it with a portable SSD. I¡¯m trying to decide between the LaCie 1TB Mobile SSDs Secure USB-C Drive that they sell at Apple (I would be able to use an Apple gift card) and a Samsung SSD T7 that¡¯s on sale at Amazon.?

Can anyone give me the pros and cons of one vs the other? I¡¯m familiar with the Samsung because hubby has a T5 on his Mac mini. I know the LaCie is made by Seagate.?

Thanks!

I can¡¯t give you a lot of guidance, just some hints.

The Samsung T7 is highly regarded by just about everyone. It is fast (at least when new), runs cool, has good compatibility with the Mac, and it is dirt cheap right now. On the minus side, it has no overprovisioning at all. But that¡¯s a common tradeoff in an inexpensive SSD. Have a look at the great current prices on the rugged version right now:

SAMSUNG T7 Shield, Portable SSD, *RUGGED*
1TB $80
2TB $120
4TB $200

I don¡¯t know anything about the LaCie SSD. I DO know that before Seagate purchased LaCie that their quality had fallen off a cliff. I also know that Seagate-branded *external* rotating disk hard drives also have the worst quality of any generally known external rotating disk hard drive brand. Having two parents, both known for low quality goods, isn¡¯t encouraging. On the other hand, the drive you are looking at has not many, but good reviews on Amazon:

Hi Randy,

Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking along the same lines as you about?its parents. I just mentioned to my hubby about the LaCie being owned by Seagate and he said hell no, you know we stay away from Seagate drives as we've not had good luck with them. I'll be ordering the Samsung rugged just need to decide size.?

A tip¡.remember I said that those T7¡¯s have no over-provisioning whatsoever? Well, that means that the drive will start slowing down as it fills up. The larger the drive, the farther off that will happen. So it would probably be worth a few extra bucks to get one that is quite a bit bigger than you suspect that you will ever need.

This is true only for those drives with no overprovisioning?

Over-provisioning staves off the problem. So does having a full version of TRIM enabled. Unfortunately, some external SSD¡¯s have neither.

What does ¡°overprovisioning¡± mean, other than buying a large drive than you expect to need? Right now, no one has said it was a software or hardware feature other than buying a drive twice your expected need.

So that is what TRIM does.

TRIM and over-provisioning are different things.
