Charging anomalie after 15.3 update

I'd appreciate feedback, please, whether this is something peculiar to my machine or more widely known / experienced.? Any further hints and tips would be a bonus!
?
I am using a MacBook Pro 15-Inch "Core i9" 2.3 Touch 2019 2.3 GHz.? Since updating to 15.3 from 15.2 it has been reporting its battery charge erratically.? Yesterday I saw it was at 1% so I immediately put it on charge, whereupon the charge was displayed as 51%.? Something similar happened today and I recorded the battery charge - please see the attached screenshot.
?
After 09:17 the machine was not connected to the charger, but the charge (apparently) went from ~70% to ~25% in next to no time, then back up to 45%, then down to ~15% and then up again to ~25%.
?
It seems to me probable that it is the very low readings which are erroneous as the green lines in the screenshot show the sort of linear decline one might reasonably expect.
?
The battery health is reported as "normal".

Download "Coconut Battery" here:
<>

I have found it to be a very helpful battery analyzer.

Also I seem to recall that a complete cold reboot used to be helpful in calibrating the battery readout. Never hurts...

Thank you Jim. ?Coconut Battery tells me that battery health is 80% but otherwise adds little.? If I'm quick enough, I'll see what it says when I next see a sudden drop in charge.
?
Given that this only started happening with 15.3, I'm strongly suspecting a bug but you never know ...

Have you checked whether a specific app/process is causing the battery drain?

View energy consumption in Activity Monitor on Mac

There are a couple things that can cause excessive battery drain after an OS upgrade:
* Your system can experience Spotlight reindexing and possibly other system updating, which can be intensive. ?This can take hours, depending on the system. ?If this is what's happening, then plug in your Mac and leave it on for it until it's complete.
* Sometimes an app doesn't behave properly after a system upgrade. ?If you notice something like that in Activity Monitor, then check with its vendor for an update.
* If all else fails, you should be able to contact Apple Support about problems caused by an upgrade. ?However, do the previous steps first. ?Someone previously posted Apple Support's phone number as?1-800-275-2273

Thank you for helping think this through, Bev.
?
The problem (as I perceive it) is not a sudden or severe battery drain, but rather the fact that the battery miraculously recharges itself without external power.
?
My working assumption, which is obviously open to challenge, is that the OS is mis-reporting or mis-measuring the battery state of charge.

You can still call Apple Support if you think this has something to do with the upgrade.

Do a search in Apple Support for “calibrate battery”.

Thank you, Brent.? I did as you suggested, the found items were mainly about iPhone batteries, but one result said that battery calibration was no longer required after OS 14.
?
I recall calibrating batteries in previous laptops - discharge fully, recharge fully - can't hurt to try it.

It turns out that the 15.3.1 update seems to have fixed the problem.? For the moment all I can say is that since I did that update the problem has not recurred (yet?).? But taken with the fact that the problem started with 15.3, it looks as if it was a bug.
?
Thanks for helping.

Please forgive me for being the bearer of bad news, but when your laptop battery is at 80%. generally it is considered to be end of life.

Of course, if you are still getting good run time from a charge, and things aren’t acting flaky, then there is no harm in waiting until those things start being a problem.

Point taken, Randy.? I was puzzled, tho', that the OS is claiming that the battery condition was "normal".

The OS isn’t very accurate in this regard. That’s why Coconut Battery exists and is so often recommended. Coconut Barrery is highly accurate.
