My new Imac with the M4 chip arrived Monday, and I have a small annoying problem. I have always used the shortcut option command eject to put my mac to sleep. According to everything I have seen on line, it is still the same, But when I try to use it, I get an empty desktop back and it is asking me for my password. When I put it in, the complete desktop reappears, But It has not gone to sleep . I can make it go to sleep by going to the apple menu and clicking on sleep..But I sure would like my old shortcut back!
Thanks,
?Jeannie

More keyboard mysteries!
What is the “eject” key on a Mac keyboard? Perhaps it was linked to ejecting a DVD on older keyboards?

yes that is what it is for, although on the new keyboard , it just is a recessed circle

I am running a much older macOS, Catalina, which still has Sys Prefs, instead of Settings, so this is just a shot in the dark. Try reassigning the keyboard shortcuts for that task. That task is not available this far back, so I have to ask, did you use 3rd part app to make the shortcut? There also used to be a way to put a Mac to sleep by another action, is the shortcut there?

I found out the if I hold those keys down for 15 seconds it will work<but the I need to use my password to open again, even though I have used settings to say no passwords. If I go to the apple menu I can click on slept and when I wake up the fomputer,no password is needed. Jeannie?

It’s a recessed circle with a real purpose, if we’re talking about the right upper corner of the keyboard. If that’s it, it’s the Touch ID key.

Have you looked at <>?

If that is for Touch ID, then that button alone is probably log out, not sleep, and would require a password to log in.?

You can create your own keyboard shortcuts. ?See: Create keyboard shortcuts for apps on Mac Select “All Applications”, “Sleep” (minus the quotes), and try to find an unused key combination.

???
The Touch ID button on MacBook keyboards can be used to power down (not a forced and precipitous restart that doesn’t close files, just an organized shutdown that DOES close files if you press and hold the Touch ID for several seconds. It can also bring up accessibility choices if you tap it rapidly 3 times, but I DON’T think it can be used to sleep the machine or log out the active user. Of course, it’s primary purpose is to log IN to the current account when the Mac is sleeping.
