Re: Power Cable Failure

That is rare, but it happens.

I usually start with the basics, if to nothing else, to narrow the issue down.

Re: The ever-elusive target of "best" wireless network cell provider

开云体育

Looking at best cellular provider only, there are three basic areas to look at.?

You want 5G, but there are different functions that 5G can do. It can be very fast, but only at shorter ranges or in very specific areas. It can be used in very crowded areas, like maiir sporting events, but need special equipment to do that. Some forms if 5G can have better penetration through interfering obstacles, compared to other forms of 5G. 4G or LTE have much better penetration. Remember, 5G is a range of radio frequencies, not just one.?

Now the tricky part, you might be able to choose the best of one or two of those features, but you can’t have all three at once. Don’t drink the KoolAid, you can’t have all three, in all locations, no matter what they tell you.?

Then add to the mix, that you live in the state of wide open spaces. If the physical terrain or man made objects don’t get in the way. You need population density for them to maintain a dense network. You have previously commented when traveling a frequent route, you’ve had areas of poor or no signal. If they had enough business in those spots, they’d add a tower cover the void.?

Next there is the issue that of the large cellular networks, not providers, but networks, meaning cell tower owners, there are basically only 3. They are AT&T, Verizon & T-Mobile. The rest are purchasing time on those networks. There are maybe a couple of small regional networks, but they are worth speaking of here.?

What you as a customer have to do is to figure out what areas you use your cell phone in the most, then figure out which network gives you the best signal. Unfortunately, that may not be the same network in all the locations you frequently use your phone.?

Here is what I face, all 3 major networks are available in my area. There is a strong signal in much of my area, except in my home. I have been on all 3 networks. The best signal I can get at home is 2 out of 4 bars, but normally only 1 bar. Since the performance of all 3 is the same, I chose by price. It is bundled with Compost, I mean Comcast. It is a MVNO that uses Verizon.?

You have said you use cellular service from Spectrum, I assume bundled with your internet connection. ?Well:

?Spectrum Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that provides access toVerizon Wireless' cellular network.”

Re: VirusBarrier Scanner

My hard drive is 994 GB & I have 813 GB available.

The options I have set for daily scanning is Maximum Protection, should I change that to Essential Protection? Also, it asks if I want to allow locations to scan for Library, Applications & my name. Should I allow any of these locations? I don’t see a location for just my Downloads folder. Is there a way to select that location separately?

Thanks for your help Randy.

How big is your hard drive, and how long is it taking to do a scan? ?How long was it taking previously.

Keep in mind that you don't have to keep on scanning your entire drive with VirusBarrier every time that you run it. Once you've scanned your entire drive once, from then on you only need to scan new software you download. So you can confine your scans narrowly to your Downloads folder, and the file attachment folder in your e-mail program. (Just don’t install any software in those two folders until after you have ?done a scan.) ?Those scans should be very quick, and still perfectly effective.

I thought so. The reason we have them in the UK is because “ring mains” became a common thing to reduce costs when building houses after WW2.

I also have a few spare mains cables. Nothing like the number of USB chargers and cables, though!

I used to save every AC cable from a failed device, but that got pretty ridiculous because the only time I ever needed a spare was if someone else lost theirs. I still have dozens and have disposed of many more than that.

And now years of saving AC cables pays off!

Re: Power Cable Failure

I know it's probably not worth the time, but I wonder if it’s a failed connection in either plug rather than the cable itself.

I realize a 4K/HDR movie would take 4 times the file size or more (20-30GB for 1 movie), but I am not offered the choice to download that.

Jim, are you downloading the purchased movies to your Apple TV 4K, or to your Mac?

I haven’t checked to see if there’s a way to check the file size of purchased ?4K movies downloaded to your AppleTV box, but if you can see the 1080p designation for the file, I’d guess you could also see the file size.

Perhaps it’s a licensing issue (someone in the chain of intellectual property custody controlling the resolution of the files you buy vs. the files you rent?), or in more typical Apple fashion, someone deciding that actual 4K file movies that stay resident on your device would fill it up so fast as to reveal the limitations of the AppleTV 4K box, and “who would want to do THAT?.” In any case, that OUGHT to be a question that someone at Apple Support could answer.

But that raises another question. Do you know if there’s a way to store your 4K files (assuming you COULD obtain them) on a local network file server?

iFixit has a guide on this but I would not recommend it unless you are confident, careful, and have the right tools. They rate it as “moderate”. This is why Apple describes it as not user-upgradeable.

Or do I only get that if I buy a 4K version on BluRay?

I’m not sure I could do anything useful with the iPhone’s hot-spot.

I considered running an HDMI cable from the Mac to the AppleTV, but I’m not convinced that would make any difference.

Well, today I tried connecting a VERY long HDMI cable from the Mac to the LG TV, and I was able to play the movie perfectly well without problems.

Have a look at this article...

The splitter might be a good option if you can't get your phone or ipad to work as intermediary.

I've had the same issue with playing Amazon Prime videos on my MacBook Pro, though they play fine on the computer, the same error comes up when I plug it into my TV with a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (my Mac does not have native HDMI on it...) so there is an HDCP mismatch/non-compliance in the data chain. At the time, the splitter was recommended. Now I just have Prime available on my existing Roku box and it works just fine....
