Re: [Admin] [macsupportcentral] Finder applications opening default

I’m ashamed to say that I’ve only just read that section for the first time! The option to quote part of the message seems simple and intuitive and what I would recommend in most cases, a “default” action unless there’s a good reason not to.

Thanks!?

Yes, but mostly we just want to quote part of the message and selecting that before hitting Reply seems very simple and intuitive. You don’t even need to Copy (cmd-c) the selected text.

Brent – I respect your view. My non-data based view is formulated from having owned / administered / moderated several tech support groups dating from Yahoo groups to the current iteration, groups.io.

?

Not empirical but very informed anecdotal evidence. As an admin it is possible to view how users respond to posts in groups.io, either via the website or via an email app.

We are not strict here. Please do *not* be afraid to ask any questions you might have. It’s better to quote what you are replying to but it is *not* essential. We are all about helping, not enforcing rules!

Re: PDF reader pro

My instructions change the system default.

When you open a link to a PDF within a browser, the browser itself may act as the viewer by default. In fact, all the modern browsers that I’m familiar with do this now. Older versions pass the file to the system, typically defaulting to the system default. However, as Jim points out, many browsers can be configured to specify an application other than the default. For instance in Firefox the default PDF behavior (use the internal viewer) can be changed to use an external application of your choice. This setting is independent of the system default.

I’m curious. Many browsers offer to open html pages as PDFs. And, of course, many web pages offer links to pdfs. Are your instructions aimed at people attempting to open existing pdfs from the Finder, or also to opening them from within a browser because Doris, the original poster in this thread, was asking about opening pdfs from within her browser (and did not specify what browser she was using).

Thanks so much,

So you do this at the site instead of by email? I’ll see if there’s anything we can change.
