Re: To Catalina or not Catalina #Upgrading

Many thanks for your advice.

Jim, I do back with Time Machine, but have never cloned an OS. I've been using Macs since the '90s. I've been really lucky to have never needed to retrieve something.

Good to know about the ripped music. And VERY good to know about the printer, Bev.

Thanks again.

Debbi?

Howdy from Santa Fe?

iTunes goes away but not your music. All 25,000 songs, mostly ripped CDs, on my ?ac are still there and work.?

I’m a lazy MacBook Air user. And I’ve always trusted that system upgrades are going to improve my computing experience. I blithely click on the Install, it does its think, and I haven’t lost any functionality so far.

After reading the many messages of Catalina issues, I’m reluctant to pull the trigger. I’ve never made a back-up copy of my current OS prior to installing an update. I understand that some applications won’t work as they currently do (have been getting that warning for some time now), but I also understand that I can upgrade some and substitute others. I think I can work around that.

I’ve learned that all of the music I laboriously transferred from CD to iTunes will be gone (only iTunes purchases will transfer), but I mostly use streaming services for music now, so I don’t think that will be too hard to handle.

Here’s my issue: I’ve Googled and checked Canon’s website to see if my MX922 printer will be compatible and I guess I just don’t know enough about what I’m reading to figure it out.

I’ve updated my iPhone Xr and my iPad mini, with no issues. It’s really just the laptop-to-printer I’m worried about.

At this point, I continue to postpone the Catalina install, only because of the printer. Do any of you have a Canon MX922, and does it still work with Catalina?

Re: To Catalina or not Catalina #Upgrading

I spoke with an Apple Senior Advisor about 30 minutes ago and was told that all my music on i-Tunes will remain intact.
Its true that Apple is abandoning i-Tunes but the advisor informed me that i-Tunes is being split into four categories;
Music, Podcasts, Audio Books and Apple TV.

Whether the music currently housed in i-Tunes was downloaded or purchased, it will still appear under the new heading, Music.
Nothing should be lost.

It sounds like the settings for the display (in the Display Preferences) is not recognizing your screen. Sometimes there are settings you can adjust on the monitor itself that let you adjust the picture properties. Have you tried that?

Your 8G ram should be adequate. More ram may help but it might not make any difference. Is it faster loading if you don't have any other apps running?

It kind of sounds like your Finance software might be trying to load its database into ram (for faster access?). maybe not.

I think you should contact the developer of your software and see if they know about this problem. There may be some sort of maintenance procedure that will help keep the app running smoothly.

Unless they changed something recently, that is true of the 27” iMacs, but not the 21.5” ones, and he said he had the smaller one.

Not, I think, on the model of iMac he described…

I quit from the app, then relaunched it and reached a fully loaded UI by about 20 seconds. I should mention that I’m experiencing the same thing in Excel and Word, now that I’m Office 365/2019 for Mac (subscription based). I think that’s unforgiveable, too. I don’t blame my computer or my OS installation because everything else I do seems to run as quickly as it used to. In the early days of VW Dieselgate, (2015) I was a frequent user of an online Excel workbook that summarized the experience of many thousands of unhappy VW owners whom VW made happy by buying back their cars; the entire workbook was reachable by mere mortals only online, and it loaded and calculated incredibly quickly. I’ll have to try to see if I can find that amazing bit of work again and ask its author if he’s had the same experience with the newest versions of Excel and Word.

It kind of sounds like your Finance software might be trying to load its database into ram (for faster access?). maybe not.

You’re right. I should contact the developer. I’ll post again after I’ve done so.

By the way, adding RAM does not require taking the iMac appart. There are 2-3 screws holding a cover at the bottom center of the screen that lets you access the RAM slots.?

Actually, that’s not the case for my computer (iMac 18.1, 18.2. OWC, MacFixit, and many others have videos showing how to do it. Given that the back of the Motherboard IS reachable though that little cupboard on many iMacs, one must wonder whether perversity rather than the “runway model, you can never be too rich or too thin” distorted body image was the motivation for this design. Watch the videos; they will terrify some, but the one I watched ended with its author saying it had been a “fun” project.

I'm no where near Catalina, nor the current iTunes. I'm still on OS X 10.7.5.

I listen to a lot of audio books, and I rip them from discs to listen to them on my iPhone. I don't store the ripped files in iTunes, because of previous lost files.?

On occasion, I discover a title is missing. While the iTunes link to the file has disappeared, the file ?is where I left it. So all I have to do is drop the file or manually open it from iTunes to re-establish the link.?

I had seen the issue mentioned before, but did not think of the link before. i did ask if they made An external copy of ripped files or a copy of all media to an external drive.?
