Re: Old back up in trash by mistake..Help!
#Mac
I did a really dumb thing when I looked at my back up drive. I saw that?the back up for my old Mac Pro was in there, and without thinking I sent?it to the trash. Jeannie What kind of a backup is/was this? A clone, a Time Machine backup, something else? I ask only because there is a (relatively) simple, safe way of deleting Time Machine backups. I got this from a website, and have used it many times in the past:

Everything you ever wanted to know about ScreenShots but weren't afraid to ask. I haven't tried or tested the "A" part, changing Default File Format, for a couple of years. The Terminal can be very useful and can be used without learning complex Unix commands. Tip. You can copy Terminal commands and paste them into Terminal at the prompt. Copy from this message, copy from article on the web, etc. A. Change Default File Format of Screenshots. 1. Launch the Terminal app (found in Applications/Utilities). 2. Change the screenshot format to JPG, TIFF, GIF, PDF, or PNG. At the Terminal prompt, type in the command: defaults write com.apple.screencapture type followed by a space, then type the relevant format suffix. ... (JPG, or, TIFF, or GIF, or PDF, or, PNG). 3. Press Enter. -Note. Just use Quit command to end the Terminal session. B. How to Change the Default Location for Screenshots. -Create a folder for your screen captures. -Launch the Terminal app (found in Applications/Utilities). Make sure you can drag this new folder into the Terminal window after typing in the following command. -Type in the following command and then press the spacebar, but don't hit Enter just yet: defaults write com.apple.screencapture location -Now drag the folder you just created into the Terminal window. The folder's path should appear after the command you typed in. -Press Enter. -Note. Dragging a folder into the Terminal window is a way to create a path to that folder without typing that command into Terminal. C. Use Screenshot app. -macOS systems used to include an app called Grab.app that was for doing a variety of screen captures. -macOS now has an app named Screenshot.app for doing this. By default it's on the Dock unless removed by user in which case it will be in the Applications folder. A white square tilted icon. (Tip: Most of the apps included by Apple have tilted icons.) D. Article on screen caps and where to save. <> E. Article on the older keyboard commands for screen captures. <> F. Drag a jpg from a website to Desktop. If you are using Google Images, Google has changed the behavior. You may see a bunch of images after a search. Click one and it should appear in larger form on the right of the Google window. Do a right-click on that larger image and pick Save Image as... from the Contextual menu. Some web sites restrict doing this. Others may place a sort of clear image over the actual image so it doesn't work (not sure how to describe it) and then the Screencap.app can be used. G. System Preferences > Keyboard panel > Shortcuts tab. -Take a look here for specific info on the several keyboard commands like Shift Command 3. Good luck. If it's to free space, it uses the same whether it's in the Trash or where it was originally.? I was going to suggest a Unix (Terminal) command, but I suspect that is what 'Trash It' uses. If you want to try it anyway, be very careful in getting it right. Start up Applications > Utilities > Terminal and copy-paste this rm -rf ~/.Trash/? then press enter.? If you get a permissions failure, try sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/ which?will prompt you for your password.? It will not be instant?as there must be a huge number of files in there, so be patient.? There *is* an option for Trash to empty automatically, but you need to select?it in Finder > Preferences > Advanced. That could be long wait, though. ;) BTW how much free space do you have? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIt is now located in my trash on my new iMac. I can not get it out of the trash. I have tried everything for 3 days.I let the computer run empty the trash since yesterday, and it only get up to a little under 400k and then stops. I tried Trash it, doesn¡¯t work, I trued going in to each file and doing a delete immediately. I had thought that if there were an option to put it back to the drive from which I had deleted it, then at least the trash would be empty and I could use it for whatever.?I did read somewhere that things can only stay in the trash for 30 day. If that is a fact, I only have 27 days to go. I know now I should have never tried to delete the back up from my old Mac Pro, But it is done, and now I have to try a way to ?either get rid of it, or get it back and let the os get rid of it as the back up disk gets full.? I also some some way to go into the registry, But I am not about to do that. ?I had a bad experience with that once, and am not about to try it again.? If I can¡¯t fix this, I guess I will have to call Apple care and see what they can do

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe more vendor and YouTube videos I watch, the more I think I can actually do all this myself, with enough time and patience. ¡ Not having started yet, one of the tips that I think I¡¯ll follow that¡¯s NOT listed on some of the videos is to test everything with the screen held in place by masking tape before applying the new adheseive strips. Sorry, I've mostly used laptops so I've never been without the built-in keyboard. I *think* so, because all the drivers and settings should be present on the clone you're booting from. The very last things to do before shutting the computer down to disassemble it are to update the clone backup, and to test that backup by booting from it. |

Still sitting on the fence regarding doing major surgery on my 2017 21.5¡± 4K iMac, I was all prepared to ask David to post after he¡¯d done the exenteration (that, for a surgeon, basically means removing most of the internal abdominal organs) and the facial surgery (removing and replacing the screen). Then I consulted MacTracker and discovered that back in 2011, Apple seemed to understand that mere mortals might want to work inside their machines, and actually DID supply an access door on them to replace the RAM with higher density modules. But then I re-read David Myers initial post and realizes he wants to replace the drive and clean the inside of the screen as well. So, David, I¡¯d be very grateful for a postoperative report, estimating:
The more vendor and YouTUBE videos I watch, the more I think I can actually do all this myself, with enough time and patience. I'm sorry but I'm still confused.? Get what "back to that external drive"? Where is it now?? Is "that old drive" another?drive?? Which Trash? On your computer?or on the external (or old?) drive? Each volume (drive or partition) has its own Trash, which not everyone realises. I hope we can clarify this. ;) Otto On Sun, 27 Oct 2019 at 02:45, Jeannie Girard <photojeannie8@...> wrote:

First of all, be sure you know how to take it apart and put it back together. Second, decide for yourself if it is worth it to do that with a 2011 machine.Barry, Thanks for your reply. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Initially, before cloning the clone backup back to the new SSD, <Option> wil NOT show you the SSD. Once it has a working OS on it, it will.
Jim, Thanks for your response. My plan is to boot to the clone backup drive and then format the new drive and copy the clone to the new SSD drive. I use a wireless key board and track pad. Do you know if these will work when I first turn on the computer after installing the new drive? |
