Re: Looking for a good color printer that will work with my Mac running Mojave.

Did your printer ever work with Mojave? If so, did you happen to update the printer driver? And if so, did it stop working well with the new driver? That happened to me a few years ago. I went into time machine and pulled out the former printer driver and replaced the new one and everything works fine.

If that¡¯s the case with you let me know and I¡¯ll tell see if I can figure out where the files are for you.

I have an HP Photosmart 7525 that¡¯s several years old. It worked well with El Capitan and still works with Catalina so I guess it would work with other OS¡¯ in-between. I also have a Brother HL-6180DW laser printer that works with those systems. Good luck with your search.

Anne

I have three Epson printers that run under Mojave,

Epson WF-4530

Epson WF-100 for portable take with me printing

Epson WF-4730

When Apple was in the darkest of times HP pulled out, stopped making printers for the Mac community, Epson stayed with us, so I¡¯ll not have an HP printer.

Also, I can¡¯t remember the name or phrase but HP printers had a nickname due to all the viruses they introduced to our networks¡by now that may have been corrected.

I have no problems with any of them under the last several OS systems.

Apple, Google Bring Covid-19 Contact-Tracing to 3 Billion People

?for our daily coronavirus newsletter on what you need to know, and??for the latest news and analysis.

Apple Inc.?and Google unveiled a rare partnership to add technology to their smartphone platforms that will alert users if they have come into contact with a person with Covid-19. People must opt in to the system, but it has the potential to monitor about a third of the world¡¯s population.

The technology, known as contract-tracing, is designed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus by telling users they should quarantine or isolate themselves after contact with an infected individual.

The Silicon Valley rivals said on Friday that they are building the technology into their iOS and Android operating systems in two steps. In mid-May, the companies will add the ability for iPhones and Android phones to wirelessly exchange anonymous information via apps run by public health authorities. The companies will also release frameworks for public health apps to manage the functionality.

This means that if a user tests positive for Covid-19, and adds that data to their public health app, users who they came into close proximity with over the previous several days will be notified of their contact. This period could be 14 days, but health agencies can set the time range.

The second step takes longer. In the coming months, both companies will add the technology directly into their operating systems so this contact-tracing software works without having to download an app. Users must opt in, but this approach means many more people can be included. Apple¡¯s iOS and Google¡¯s Android have about 3 billion users between them, over a third of the world¡¯s population.

The pandemic has?killed almost 100,000?and infected 1.62 million people. Governments have ordered millions of people to stay home, sending the global economy into a vicious tailspin. Pressure is building to?and get the world back to work. Contract-tracing is a key part of this because it can help authorities contain a potential resurgence of the virus as people resume regular activities.

Still, this technology is controversial because it involves sharing sensitive health information from billions of people via mobile devices that are constantly broadcasting their location. Apple and Google stressed on Friday that their system preserves users¡¯ privacy. Consent is required and location data is not collected. The technology also won¡¯t notify users who they came into contact with, or where that happened. The companies said they can¡¯t see this data either, and?noted?that the whole system can be shut down when needed.

Such a close partnership between these longtime rivals is extremely rare. The technology giants have competed in smartphone operating systems, app stores, media services, and voice-recognition technology for years -- while trading barbs over the privacy of each others¡¯ platforms. However, both companies have been under pressure to use their prodigious resources to help fight the pandemic.

¡°All of us at Apple and Google believe there has never been a more important moment to work together to solve one of the world¡¯s most pressing problems,¡± the companies said in a joint statement.

The contract-tracing technology isn¡¯t the first step against Covid-19 for either company. Google launched an information website in March, while Apple has released its own screening tools for iPhone users. Apple has also donated over 20 million masks to health-care workers and has designed face shields, and Verily, a unit of Google parent?Alphabet Inc., is running virus-testing sites in some parts of California.

Other organizations are also working on contact-tracing. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology earlier this week??plans for a similar system. Some countries and third-party developers have also tried implementing contact-tracing on phones, but they have faced privacy and connectivity issues that the new system is designed to avoid.

Moving large numbers of emails causes iCloud to get out of sync... how to fix?

Hi all,

Last week, I decided to move the mouldering, festering pile of old email from my inbox to a DMZ mailbox, so that I could force myself to keep up with daily email while shoveling away the garbage bit by bit.

This attempt to get my email under control is going well on my laptop. It is hopelessly hampered on my iPhone by iCloud's general bugginess: The Great Mail Migration didn't sync properly to my iCloud account. Thus, my inbox on iCloud is a mix of the still-festering garbage and the nice fresh email.

How do I get iCloud's contents to reflect the contents on my laptop?

I've tried syncing the iCloud account. Nothing. I tried disabling and reenabling my iCloud account on my computer. Nothing. I looked online, and all I could find was people making request for Apple to include a force-sync option.

So... does anyone have any hints?

Thanks,

Bill

Another problem I was having was Time Machine couldn¡¯t back up to my external ssd drives. And disk utility and disk warrior couldn¡¯t fix the problems. I didn¡¯t even mention this to the support guy.

In the back of my mind I had wanted to do the upgrade but was resisting the urge because I just knew there would be issues I would have to deal with. And when every thing was said and done it was going to cost me money and time. I was correct on both counts

On April 1st I bit the bullet and did the upgrade to. It seemed to go okay but the machine was slow AND I had a bunch of apps that I hadn¡¯t used in ages that wouldn¡¯t work with Catalina and I had several Apple apps that had to be upgraded.

The first thing I did was to go through my list of applications - I wanted to cull out the ones that no longer worked and that I didn¡¯t want anymore. I had an old version of ¡°Clean My Mac which I upgraded (although I had to buy a year license - I¡¯ll cancel before it renews). Using Clean My Mac I deleted a bunch of apps.

Next I went through my apps for ones I had purchased over the years and wanted to upgrade - Disk Warrior 5.0, Toast Titanium 10, Photoshop Elements 12, Neo Office 2015.2, Vue Scan 9.6.06, and Graphic Converter 8.8.3.

I purchased Toast and Photoshop Elements upgrades first. It went okay but took a long time. Next I did Vue Scan and it, too went okay. Then I began having trouble. It would take forever to boot a program (spinning beach ball would last 30 seconds or longer) and the last straw was my desk top icons were gone but their names remained but were scrambled. I booted into recovery mode and was able to reinstall Catalina. Once that was complete everything seemed to be working okay, not great but okay. Apps still took a while to open but not as longs as before the second install.

Once the upgrade was complete Disk Warrior and Disk Utility were able to fix the Time Machine ssd drives (I had three not backing up - my iMac, my wife¡¯s MacBook Pro, and my MacBook air).

Next the App Store app notified me I had three 3rd party apps that needed an update and Pages, Numbers, and Keynote needed newer versions. I went to the update page and said update all. The update started and then the app froze. I closed the app and opened it - nothing. I rebooted the computer - nothing. I called Apple Support and after what seemed like hours but was probably 30 minutes I reached a tech - he didn¡¯t know what to do and passed me on to another tech who didn¡¯t know what to do. She talked with her supervisor and said I needed to reinstall the OS and I balked - I felt sure that wasn¡¯t the answer.

Finally I was connected to Richard an AppleCare senior advisor and self-described tech geezer who has been using Apple computers since the days of the Apple II. We did screen sharing and he went through my system files and had me delete a gazillion cache files and more (when I emptied the trash there were 30,000+ files being deleted.

Then he had me open Malware Bytes and scan the computer - fortunately there were no issues.

Next I opened Safari and he had me empty caches, clear history, and remove all files in the manage website data preference pane. He also suggested I should do these things regularly - he says he does it every night when he is through using the computer.

He also suggested that when surfing the net I should use a ¡°Private Window¡± unless I am going to a site where I will need to logon. He told me web sites sell ¡°pixels¡± to companies that use them to collect data etc. I don¡¯t understand it well enough to explain it to you but that¡¯s why he suggested using private window in Safari (File¡ª>New private window)

By the time all the files were deleted the App Store app had downloaded all the updates. Amazing.

I started this Journey on April 1 and today it is complete. As I said in the beginning I knew it would cost time and money and I was correct on both counts. Six days and $400 later my Mac seems to be operating just fine!

But the money you had to spend was for upgrades and applications, right? Was the any expense to actually get the Mac up & running?

?Hello everyone. I hope you ALL are healthy and staying safe.

I was having problems with mail on my iMac. I don¡¯t shut down my computer at night and if I left mail open it would crash. I called Apple support and was told they couldn¡¯t do any thing about the problem because my OS (El Capitan) was too old. They said I should upgrade the OS.

Thousands of Microsoft Servers Infected by Crypto-Mining Botnet Since 2018, Says Report

A malicious botnet has been targeting Microsoft SQL database servers to mine cryptocurrency for two years, according to a new report.

Guardicore Labs said Wednesday that in the last several weeks alone, the hackers had managed to infect close to 2,000 to 3,000 servers daily. As reported by?, the botnet has been dubbed "Vollgar" after the vollar cryptocurrency it mines alongside?monero?(XMR), and its "vulgar" way of operating.?

The attack brute-forces passwords in order to access servers with poor security. Once in, it executes configuration changes allowing the hackers to run malicious commands and download malware binaries.

Entities across health care, aviation, IT, telecoms and education in China, India, South Korea, Turkey and the U.S. have all been affected, according to the report.

The network of compromised computers was used to host all of the attackers infrastructure, with its primary command-and-control server based in China, according to Guardicore. That itself had been compromised by multiple attackers, the firm added.

In other security news, ZDNet reported earlier this week that QR codes ¨C now ubiquitous across the bitcoin industry as a mean of making it easier to make bitcoin payments ¨C have become?.?

The shockingly simple attack saw malicious actors provide a purported service allowing people to create a QR code for payments to their bitcoin addresses. However, the address inserted was the attacker's own.
