Re: Running Linux on a Chromebook
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMy son and I linuxized a retired Toshiba ¡°Swanky¡± chromebook.? Right now it¡¯s running NixOS with the xfce desktop, which handles the odd hardware (sound card, etc.) quite well. ? We did this in order to run FLDigi and JS8Call for digital modes, and that works well so long as the Chromebook can access an NTP server (it¡¯s onboard clock is atrocious). ? We had to break the write protect on the onboard storage and add an expansion SD card to gain enough space for the OS.? Probably not for the faint of heart, but it was a fun hacking job! ? 73 KD2HBV ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>

Re: Running Linux on a Chromebook
Darrin, Thank you for mentioning Midnight Commander.? It may help me here.? I recall the Norton Commander and there was a time when I used it in my DOS days. 73, Andy, ka2uqw

It will have a dual window that makes it easier to copy and is mouse enabled.

Re: Running Linux on a Chromebook
Frank? First you need to get the proper file. the zip file is for windows. from Linux open a browser search fldigi download.? Select?source forge, download files - it should be fldigi-4.2.06.tar.gz then go to : ? for install?instructions. Are you running?Pengwin?linux? This is a linux version optimized?for Windows subsystems for Linux. Maybe not the best choice for a chromebook. search for "best linux for a chromebook", some good choices.? Also , yes, linux has a learning curve, it will take time and effort to learn. It is a journey. I've been using linux for 20 years and still learning. Lots of help out there. Let us know how it goes Thanks Dan KC2STA On Wed, Jan 29, 2025 at 3:30?PM Frank Katalenas, N2UMC via <fkatalenas=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Running Linux on a Chromebook
Thank you for the links provided in your reply,? ?I will need to check them.
FYI this is as far as I have progressed.
?
My terminal is open it shows:
?
fkatalenas@penquin:~/fldigi-4.2.04/fldigi-4.204$
?
I guess I'm not too far along in the process?
I do have a windows machine on order for my shack, but I will have some time to play and learn Linux.
My goal is to work digital modes.
?
Thanks again for your advice

Re: Running Linux on a Chromebook
Due to my own personal experience I would never recommend a chromebook for Linux install beyond experimentation.? I have had several chromebooks and none of them ran efficiently or effectively any Linux software I wanted it to run.? Due to the lack of driver support, nuetured hardware, and other things I have abandoned chromebooks altogether in favor of used laptops or Windows PCs, and then installing a fullfledged Linux OS.? My flavor is Ubuntu.?
?
Based on your description you stated you unzipped and nothing...??
?
I have a couple of questions.? FLdigi in Linux is distributed as a build from source app.? Meaning you have to compile it before you can run it.??
?
What flavor of Linux is on your Chromebook? (Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, etc)?
?
Did you follow the Sourceforge Wiki HOWTO instructions to compile and install FLDigi??
?
If you didn't compile it, it won't run.??

Re: Running Linux on a Chromebook
you must be in the dialout group for fldigi to function properly. however i dont think that would cause?it not to run at all. Open a terminal,? then type fldigi. Does it open? if not what is the terminal telling you, look for errors. Thanks Dan KC2STA On Tue, Jan 28, 2025 at 8:07?PM Frank Katalenas, N2UMC via <fkatalenas=[email protected]> wrote:

Adrian,
Thank you.
That Soundcard/Devices tab must be in a later version of Fldigi than the 4.2.03 version that I have.? I don't have the pipewire selection available on the tab.
But I will keep it in mind when I can upgrade.?
As of now the latest .deb file I can access is for Fldigi 4.2.03.? I see that a 4.2.06 tar.gz file is available but I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to build an installation from it.? So I will have to wait until a later version is available in .deb format.?? Or I will have to learn how to install from the tar.gz file - maybe give it a try soon.
Thanks again,

Bob, I much appreciate your quick reply.? I think you have found my problem.
I never thought about the recording tab as having the effect that it does.
The pulldown was set to "Monitor of PCM2903C CODEC"
I changed it to simply "PCM2903C CODEC" and that solved the problem.? I now have audio to Fldigi.
I will have to look up what the "Monitor" function is!!!
Thanks again so much for your help.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Bill IME a PulseAudio server string is not needed except in special cases. (like connecting to a server on another machine) My first thought is that fldigi is defaulting to another sound card source, that isn't the rig. In my Pavucontrol for example the recording tab has a pulldown source selection for the PC sound card and the Icom. Might yours be set wrongly? eg the internal PC sound card rather than the rigs. (however your hardware is setup) Oh and also check the recording source isn't muted. Also check for input on fldigi by toggling the WF, FFT & SIG button. You may have to adjust the waterfall offset and range values. (between the WF and x1 buttons. Cheers Bob VK2YQA On 29/1/25 13:57, Bill, K4AJ via

I have successfully installed Fldigi 4.2.03 on Ubuntu 24.4 I have good rig-control between Fldigi and my transceiver. But I am unable to get audio from my transceiver to Fldigi. ? I do have audio from my transceiver to my computer because I can see it on the Pulse Audio Volume control bar-graph. ? Ubuntu 24.04 uses Pipewire for audio, but W1HJK indicates that this is not an issue with Fldigi. ? On Fldigi configuration/Soundcard/Devices I select PulseAudio but I have no clue how to determine the Server string. Therefor this is probably the issue I am facing. ? I have looked up Server string in the file fldigi_def.xml <PULSESERVER></PULSESERVER> Putting that in for the Server String field on the configuration window, I get a Pulse Audio error: ¡°Connection refused¡± ¡°Is the server running?¡± ? But there is no PulseAudio server in Ubuntu 24.04 ? Anyone have any ideas about getting the audio into Fldigi? ? Thanks. ? ? ? |
