How are u making out Kevin....
give a shout when u have some time. I went throught the Suse install again as it is on the net now, and it's a bit convoluted to say the least. I wanted to see where maybe you had problems. Not hard to find them...the description of the ISO's leaves a lot to be desired and the mirrors sites have to be looked at hard... So let me know whats up... this is a new suse on a different drive from ground zero..have to admit it was not fun or quick, untill I went back to the idea of getting right away from the suse ftp.. all in all it took me probably 10 hours from ground zero to gmfsk up and running...to long...but have to admit a few were nap hours when i just had to wait... Re: identifying modes
w1hkj
I know that Patrick is toying with the idea of trying to identify the digital mode automatically. But that can be a real nightmare. His waterfall video id is ok until someone complains that it is not digital ... he is using a form of sstv similar to what is used for the picc mode in gmfsk.
I hooked up the sound card to a set of amplified speakers and listened to all of the modes. That helped a little, but if it is one your not used to hearing your chances of guessing the right mode is very problematic. I'm getting good feedback from Jim, W6JVE, on the Kachina program. He has the rig / computer / soundcard all hooked up and running gmfsk in tandem with the Kachina CAT in various mods including RTTY. So far everything is working exactly as designed. MFSK-8 is a lot slower than MFSK-16 ... so you don't see it too much. Dave |

identifying modes
"dave cooper"
Felt like a rookie tonight...called a cq on mfsk16..was answered
but had no print. It felt and sounded like mfsk, did the usuall...rev..slide up and down...and scratch the head. Then a good friend of mine came on and said it was Olivaa...ok buy that...but before I got a chance the orginal caller came back and said that no it had been mfsk8 by a mistake on his part... Granted wide awake I probably would have probably not thought Olivia, but on the other hand, I doubt if i would have guessed mfsk8. Not sure I have ever hand an mfsk8 contact. I still like the idea of being able to identify the modes by the sound and feel of them. It just feels better, to know that I have that ability. To the point i guess..how do u feel about some of the mode indentifiers being used these days. Ever notice that some are up to twice as wide as the primary signal. The cw mode identifiers make sense to me, but then again I'm good at cw, while some would have a problem. Bandwidth and sound both are good clues, as is the picture on the waterfall, but its not a certain thing will all the variants these days. Maybe instead of the video ID's, CW ID's and such we need something more simple, and suits all including the hearing impaired that the digi modes have given the hobby back to. Just kinda rambling... but it got me thinking..a bit anyways.. |

Linux (Deb) Installed - Questions about HKJ gMFSK
"Kevin der Kinderen"
Got everything up and running on Debian for the most part. Still doing
some tweaking. gMFSK compiled and installed fine. Just finished a QSO with George K1EPT and Dave VE3IXI. Couple of issues presented themselves. Using an old TS-830S, I have no rig control so I didn't load hamlib. Not sure if this is related to the problems. First - the waterfall frequency scale is currently showing between 9000 and 10500 Hz. I know I'm not transmitting at these high audio tones. I found that by hitting the little box beside SYNC & the spinner box (showing 1015 - is this my audio freq?) that the scale shifts so that where I had the hairline moves all the way to the left. Now how do I get it back to where it's showing my actual audio frequency? Second - in the log section, BAND is currently showing 0.008556 and it cannot be edited. This looks like it corresponds to the waterfall's frequency scale. I expected this box to allow me to enter the band (either 40 or 7.000 - I only log the band, not the actual frequency). Third - I programmed a macro in F2 but every time I hit F2 it doesn't send the macro, it clears the log. Other than these issues, the QSO with Dave went great. I don't think I'm going to miss MixW so much. Think I can get a refund? 73, Kev - K4VD - SKCC 605 |

Re: This Weekend's Challenge... Linux Install
w1hkj
My personal preference for a development / ham platform is Debian. Mostly because it is maintained by a distributed group of geeks who will never charge for the distro. Secondly the upgrades are seamless and you can even update the OS without a reboot required. I have been using Debian for 7 months now without a hickup, and I really bash the system around with all of my development.
Suse is a very stable commercial distribution of Linux. I have used it in the past. Dave (ve3ixi) has more recent experience with that distro. Nearly all of the modern linux distributions allow you to choose the simple install (greedy, I get the whole disk) kind of a thing, or one in which you pick and choose what, how and where to install things. I maintain a separate partition for the usr directory and also a separate partition for the home directory. I also have a second HD with a mirror image of the OS, usr and home directories. Am I paranoid or what? I backup from the primary to secondary on a weekly basis. Check out the links on the linuxham site. Dave (hkj) |

Re: This Weekend's Challenge... Linux Install

Hi Kevin
Well I keep coming back to Suse and the GM version and 10.0 is version of my choice. Scsi--can't help u there but someone will if you need it Bittorrent or anydownload..ok..but stay away from the main Suse ftp. Try to use one of the US sites...the main site is way to slow. Work with kenerl.org or whatever they call it or ale.*** Just do a search for suse mirrors. After the intitial download of the iso and the making of the disk the install should only take about an hour or so... When u get to the point of the gmfsk install yak at me...have the pitfalls down pat and there are a couple. Good luck ya got my address...and to answer ur question about the harley starter...nope not in my closet.. Re: A stretch but... how about DominoEX support?
w1hkj
I have both the ZL2AFP source code and the specifications for dominoEX in hand and under study.
The source code is in Power Basic and is not a 1:1 conversion to gmfsk which is written in C and C++. I will announce when I am ready to solicite beta testers. Dave (hkj) |

A stretch but... how about DominoEX support?
Joe Veldhuis
I know it would take a great deal of work, but it would be very nice to
have support for DominoEX in gMFSK. At present I don't think there is anything on Linux that supports this mode yet, and although one can get the two windows apps that support it running under WINE, the result is cumbersome and unstable. Having the app crash in the middle of a QSO and refuse to start again is not good. ZL2AFP gives out the source code to the standalone windows app on request (zl2afp at internet dot co dot nz), at least porting that would be helpful if adding the mode to gMFSK is out of the question at the moment. -Joe, KD8ATU |

W1AW
"dave cooper"
Now the above has been a friend of mine for years. Spent more than
a few hours with the code and reading the bulletins. Had and still have respect for the station and its goals in our hobby. Now I have to ask, why the flagrent use of power and the changing in frequencies by just a few kHz. Sometimes I feel like the digi guys are in a battle with the founding station. I honestly don't mind giving a bit of lee-way to the guys who would be practicing code and or tuning there cw programs via the station. Maybe its just that I never noticed the up and down antics of W1AW before I started using digi modes... Dave (ve3ixi) |

Updates
"David Freese"
Just posted for ArgoV, DeltaII and Icom728. Improved the FLTK control
widget, FreqControl. You do not need to bother downloading the file unless you are following the development and want to see the changes or you are using this control in your own application development. There is no real change in application function. Dave (hkj) |

Re: My learning experience with IPC Perl gMFSK
w1hkj
Very nice Tim. The same kind of thing can be accomplished using tcltk (wish), or python. Perhaps some one would like to try their hand at either of those. Wish has a very easy to use gui interface and you can build some pretty slick applications that are all scripts.
