I know that Patrick is toying with the idea of trying to identify the digital mode automatically. But that can be a real nightmare. His waterfall video id is ok until someone complains that it is not digital ... he is using a form of sstv similar to what is used for the picc mode in gmfsk.
I hooked up the sound card to a set of amplified speakers and listened to all of the modes. That helped a little, but if it is one your not used to hearing your chances of guessing the right mode is very problematic.
I'm getting good feedback from Jim, W6JVE, on the Kachina program. He has the rig / computer / soundcard all hooked up and running gmfsk in tandem with the Kachina CAT in various mods including RTTY. So far everything is working exactly as designed.
MFSK-8 is a lot slower than MFSK-16 ... so you don't see it too much.
