From what's posted here:
, it appears that
Raspberry Pi engineers have decided sleep/hibernate are too costly to
pursue.
I received this response:

That refers to Pi 4 (well it doesn't refer to Pi 4, but it was before the
launch of Pi 5!)
On Pi 5, the suspend to SDRAM is implemented in the kernel and firmware (it
worked the last time we tested it, but of course might be broken at the
moment). What we're waiting for is support from the SDRAM PHY team at
Broadcom to provide the sequences to get into and out of self-refresh
mode...
We're expecting to have that sometime in the new year...

Hello
What chance do I have of getting Debian to run on my new RPi 5 ?
If it is possible to get debootstrap to start it going, I would apreciate advice.
I did try images from but they will not work on RPi 5 (only say they work up to 4) and the boot loader spat some error message when I tried to boot a trixie image.
I can run Raspbian - but I would rather not.
I can run some version of Ubuntu (the desktop version, but not the server), but again I would rather not.
I intend to run the machine as a kubernetes server. I think that I would prefer to use Ubuntu over Raspbian, but would much prefer Debian.
So, I could run it headless, but would prefer if I could use the HDMI output.
