The best point size is equivalent to a point size = 10 for a 96 ppp Arial font This is necessary because system or default fonts can be bigger if we have selected 120 ppp fonts (big fonts), and messages are too longs and they are truncated on display Perhaps rather than displaying the information about certain buttons, at least, in the status bar it would be easier to use tooltips. This way they appear in a more logical place and don't get truncated. peace, core -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFDhKopGAuLrxOyeJMRAt23AKCbT87jw2e8Mm8QA3lZ5zCiRyXDfwCeNVeL nU5Xf6EYWUgyQujCQTTEy9s= =xajw -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

Except for the EXE part (avid Linux user here) I'm all for it.

Hi,
I'm having a go at a quick and dirty EESCHEMA tutorial. It's being done with WINK, so will consist of screenshots and explanatory text boxes. It will be downloadable as a stand alone EXE file. It's just a simple 555 timer project (a bit boring,I know) but it will introduce most of the basic operations. Next will follow a CVPCB and PCBNEW tutorial to follow on. Hopefully it will be done in time for Christmas, but no promises. It will take this long because I have to learn WINK as well as review my kicad skills. Feedback on this will be appreciated. Font problem
Esteemed reflectees,
my problem is the font readability. A very small, Times faced font appears in the lower status bar as well as in many menus, ie. in the component library selection (but not in all menus). Tested the last version in both Linux and Win XP environment, both behaved nearly similar. Because of screen resolution used (1280 x 1024) I simply can't read a 6 pt. font, even worse if Times faced. Therefore I suggest to change this font to a bit bigger size with Helvetice face. Many thanks Martin Kratoska |

KiCad wiki
Bryan Stillwell
After seeing a request earlier this week for a KiCad wiki, I went ahead
and set one up at the following site: There's not much there currently except for some info on my friend Charlie's and my personal hacking on the KiCad codebase, but hopefully that will change quickly! The site isn't official in any way, but I would like to have it help kickstart a community of sharing among people that use KiCad. Currently I'm requiring people to be logged in to edit pages. The idea is that this will cut down on wiki-spam, but if there's a large outcry I can change this. Bryan |
Re: KICAD error

Hello Chuck,
2 Ideas : - You have bad sectors on your hard drive; in this case, you can try to rename your kicad directory as kicad_old_install, and re-instal one more time kicad in a new kicad directory, but in an other location on your hard drive. - A problem occured when you downloaded the kicad files; in this case, try (if possible), to download one more time the .zip file, and re-install it. Hoping this will help. Regards. ¸é¨¦³¾²â. ...chuck coffee <check_bud_gone@y...> wrote: from Elect. KICAD error

?I have a question, and I am a new user with Kicad, having moved from Elect. Workbench.? - I downloaded and installed both the Kicad-2005-10-27.zip and the doc_components-2005-09-07.zip files and have Kicad directory. I have even downloaded and re-installed Kicad- -2005-10-27.zip but am having the same problem. Machine is Athlon XP2200 with 1Gbyte Ram and SATA drive. Thanks chuck

What we need is a Wiki :) Can you do that on Yahoo? Tracy Making PCBs is a complex process as you say - I have only done it as a hobbyist, but I have created a couple of double sided boards for Surface mount chips which were commercially made. There are some who appear to be professionals on the list who may be able to advise. I am not familiar with the finer points for commercial SM production etc The process is Create Schematic components (hopefuly there will be enough ready made components in the libraries already) Draw schematic - you will be familiar with these no doubt. Read the help - it appears reasonably good. Try to create a copy of a simple circuit you already have Create netlist - this is a file with the names for all the "nodes" in a circuit and the pins that are connected to each. Associate "footprints" with each component. These are the PCB pattern for each component, with pin numbers which correlate to the netlist. Again there will be enough in the PCB library already with luck. If not you will have to create a footprint for some components using the module editor. Create the PCB In brief : Import components and netlist create outline/mechanical drawing of board Place modules in best positions Draw tracks - in theory this could be done by the computer In practice some human intervention is usually needed (how good is the autorouter in KICAD??) Check layout against netlist using DRC (Design Rule Check) and correct the (inevitable) errors Tidy up - a million details - drill sizes, placement of text on overlay, track widths etc etc Create plot files for PCB house - these are generally in Gerber format - I havent got to this stage yet with KICAD Gerber files can be tricky - I dont know how good KICAD is Hope this is a start Richard |
Getting Started
Tracy
Hello Everyone
I have been reading the list for a few weeks, you all seem much more advanced than me ;) I have been building electronic projects for a long time, but have not learned to use any PCB software (exept for PCBExpress ...) so I'm not really familliar with the process. I used to build 'dead bug' style but the new tiny components do not work well with that! Is there a very basic 'getting started' tutorial or example I can follow that is designed for a newbie like me? I know my project, my components, and everything to do with it, but I'm totally green on creating a schematic and pcb with any software at all. Basically, I need to create a 'hello world' pcb ;) Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, I'm overwhelmed with the large amount of data available for Kicad and PCB creation in general. Thank you all in advance! Tracy N4LGH |
Is there a way to 'Pan'/Feature request
I am a new user to Kicad and am acclimating from Eagle. One feature
that I haven't discovered (if it exists) is a way to 'pan' or 'scroll' the drawing via mouse; that is, apart from using the scroll bars. Is this feature implemented? Else, it would be a nice feature to add in future revision. Thanks, Dave |
