In KiCad 'Plug in and content manager', there

Most PCB fabs will remove this anyway. If you don't want to leave it
to them, KiCad can do it for you:
File > Fabrication Outputs > Gerbers > Gerber Options >
Subtract soldermask from silkscreen ==> Enable

JLCPCB do not put silkscreens on solder pads, so it is not a matter in this case. Just it will not apear on the pcb.

In addition to signifying required mechanical clearance (+placement
tolerance), the courtyards can also account for the "shadowing" by
tall components. This mostly affects PCBs with SMDs that will
reflowed by (predominantly) infra-red radiant heating.

Found it!?? (yes, PCBNew).
In the "objects" panel, references was unchecked. What confused me was that the indentation seemed to suggest it was relating to through-holes, as distinct from every component.

the Objects tab on the right-hand side (YMMV - I'm still using 7 and
I've not changed any default positions or visibilities of toolbars).

All my reference designators have disappeared??
Using Kicad 8.0.5
Somehow, I've made all my reference designators invisible... And, I can't get them to come back. I've been through Edit->Text and Graphics Properties (which I'm accustomed to using to change text sizes) but I can't get the ref des text to return.? I've looked everywhere I can find, and everything seems as normal.
Any guesses on what I might be missing?
