National Preparedness Month: Ensuring Family Safety
2
For more information about the Klamath Falls ARES group, please visit https://www.klamathares.org/ National Preparedness Month: Ensuring Family Safety September is National Preparedness Month. In coordination with our partners at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service? (ARES?) is producing a series of weekly articles to help radio amateurs and their families stay safe. See previous stories: https://www.arrl.org/news/resilience-through-amateur-radio-for-national-preparedness-month https://www.arrl.org/news/national-preparedness-month-have-a-go-kit For a ham or any other public safety responder, whether paid or volunteer, it is not uncommon to be called out to provide assistance during disasters. We often do not know when we will be called or exactly what the call will involve. We also do not know how long we may be deployed. In the last edition, we focused on our go kit and the tools we should have to deploy as an amateur radio volunteer. But have we made sure our family is prepared for these times, whether we are deployed or will be staying home? As the theme of this month suggests, ARRL Director of Emergency Management Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, says it comes down to being prepared. "Make a plan with your family and ensure basic supplies are available including water, food and first aid capabilities. Do you have a generator or alternate power capabilities and do your family members know how to use it? Have a communications plan, including backup communications, with family members and friends," he said. Johnston says to ensure your family knows where to go if they must evacuate for some reason. Always remember your family and your health and safety should always come first. "Remember that there may be a time that you are the victim. There may be a time that you must turn down a request for assistance because you must take care of your family first. Ask if you can be put in a slot later down the roster to allow time to get your family to safety or have everything settled to ensure your family is cared for before deployment," said Johnston. ARRL recognizes the tremendous work ham radio volunteers put into serving their communities. "If your mind is not on the mission, you may be putting yourself and others at risk. Therefore, you should ensure your family's wellbeing before, during and after a major event," Johnston continued. Learn about how to become an ARES Volunteer on the ARRL website at www.arrl.org/ares. Icom D-Star/analog repeaters question!
4
Hello all, Now that we have a new 440 D-star repeater here in town being operated by the Hogback Amateur Radio Club, would the KBARA be interested in a 2 meter and/or 440 D-star repeater as well? There is a new in box Icom ID-RP4010V (440 version) and a new in box Icom ID-RP2010V (144 version) available from a ham in Virginia for $1000 each with free shipping. These repeaters normally cost $1,799.99 new. They would also need power supplies, duplexers, feedlines, antennas, and rack space to get on the air. These repeaters are ¡°mixed mode¡± in that they can act as both D-Star (digital) and FM (analog), so a D-Star capable radio would not be required to use them. They would be a great addition to the club¡¯s assets, especially with open space on Stukel Mountain, open space on Plum Ridge (if we¡¯re able to access it), as well as potential sites on Swan Lake Point or Applegate Butte if the owners would allow it for additional coverage in the Chiloquin and Sprague River areas. I believe Swan Lake Point would have the better coverage for those communities. Perhaps even could be used in the club trailer? Anyone have any ideas or questions or comments or concerns about such a thing for the club? 73, Erik KD6RRR

FWD from Other sources David Bell N2RSN From: Bobby Graves - KB5HAV <kb5hav@...> Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2024 08:10 To: 'Bobby Graves - KB5HAV' <kb5hav@...> Subject: [Non-DoD Source] RE: Tropical Cyclone Ernesto (UPDATE) Thursday, August 15, 2024 @ 9:00 AM EDT (1300 UTC) The information contained in this email is going to numerous amateur radio nets, government and non-government agencies, as well as various amateur radio news outlets. The Hurricane Watch Net will activate for Hurricane Ernesto tomorrow (Friday) afternoon beginning at 2:00 PM EDT (1800 UTC). Here are our activation plans. Activation Plans: Friday ? 20 meters: 14.325 MHz (USB) at 2:00 PM EDT (1800 UTC) until we lose propagation at night. ? 40 meters: 7.268 MHz (LSB) at 7:00 PM EDT (2300 UTC). We will remain active on this frequency overnight for as long as propagation allows. If propagation allows us to operate all night, we will suspend operations at 7:30 AM EDT Saturday to allow the Waterway Net to conduct their daily Net. Saturday ? 20 meters: we will resume operations on 14.325 MHz at 7:00 AM EDT (1000 UTC). ? 40 meters: we will resume operations on 7.268 MHz at 8:30 AM EDT (1230 UTC). During any Net Activation, we welcome and encourage all licensed amateur radio operators who are in the affected area of landfalling Hurricanes to participate and share your observed weather conditions. While we do look for measured weather data, we are more than happy to accept estimated data. Information we need in addition to your name, callsign, and location are, ? Wind Speed ? Wind Gust ? Wind Direction ? Barometric Pressure (when was the last time your barometer was calibrated) ? Rainfall¡how much and over what period of time ? Storm Surge ? Damage During our Net Operations, we are able to provide back-up communication for: Emergency Operation Centers, Storm Shelters, Non-Governmental Organizations, and other vital interests, which can involve military relief operations, involved in the protection of life and property before, during, and after a hurricane event. As always, we greatly appreciate the daily users and various nets who use 14.325 MHz and 7.268 MHz for allowing us a clear frequency. It certainly makes our job easier and I know those in the affected area appreciate it as well. Crater Lake Rim Runs 2024 CANCELLED
2
The event this year has been cancelled! Due to the bad air quality (200 at park currently with worse projection for tomorrow), for the safety of all, it's decided that cancellation of the Rim Run would be for the best. Thank you all who has volunteered to help out in this event. Below is a letter sent by the event race directors to registered runners. 2024 Crater Lake Rim Run Cancellation Notice. Rim Run Participants, It is with sadness that we feel that we must cancel the 2024 Crater Lake Rim Run. The air quality in all of Southern Oregon has taken a sudden turn for the worse and projections for this weekend do not look favorable. AQI numbers are in the unhealthy to very unhealthy category in all of Southern Oregon, including Crater Lake. Much thought and discussion has happened with directors and medical consultation these last six hours about the safety of not only participants, but also the hundreds of volunteers and spectators. The whole goal of the event is to promote health and fitness of all, and it would be imprudent to expose people to poor air quality. This is especially difficult and with heavy heart to cancel this year¡¯s Rim Run, with the passing of the race founder Bob Freirich this past spring. He loved this race and we always want to honor him through it with dignity and respect. We would ask (plead may be a better word) that you defer your registration to 2025. If you choose to do so, we will send you the 2024 Rim Run shirt. However, we understand that since the Run will not be held, a refund is an option as it is not honest to accept your money without providing the Crater Lake Rim Run Experience. If you choose for a refund, please let me know. We apologize for the suddenness of this email. We know many have or would have traveled from near and far for this experience. Sincerely Rob and Ken Coffman Race Directors -- 73 | Cyndi | KK7AZD | Chiloquin by Agency Lake HH 6101191 | HOIP 100097

Crater Lake Rim Runs 2024
6
Greetings all, Now that Field Day is over, it¡¯s time to plan for the the Crater Lake Rim Runs (¡°Rim Run¡±). One 6.7-mile run, a half marathon and a marathon, the Rim Run occurs on the second Saturday of August each year at the spectacular rim of America¡¯s deepest blue lake. Walt and I will once again be your Rim Run coordinators this year and we¡¯re looking for volunteers to help out with communications on August 10th. For most stations, a handheld radio is all that's needed to participate. We will talk about this more at the upcoming monthly meeting. Please check your calendar and let Walt or me know if you will be available to help out. -- 73 | Cyndi Albro | KK7AZD | Chiloquin by Agency Lake HH 6101191 | HOIP 100097 | kk7azd@...
