Hello all,

I've had yet another family incident that is going to have me wrapped up the next several days, so I will be once again missing our Field Day fun. Hopefully I'll get to stop by at some point to at least say hello and cheer you all on, but it's not looking very promising. I hope it's a great weekend operating and I'll see you all as soon as I can.

W7VW Field Day 2021

Hello everybody,

The W7VW field day event for the second year was held just outside the Klamath Falls airport.? Although very dusty and hot the site offers the space to erect several antennas and the proximity?to the city.? It turns out that this year was actually the best.? ?Band conditions were a little improved over last year but the thing that made the effort outstanding was the participation.? Except for the GOTA station and the single QSO that Al completed on 2 meters all the Q's were done by either CW or Digital using FT8.? And for the first year since I have been involved the club trailer was never shut down.? At about 10 pm on Saturday the "night shift" took over and ran the unit until morning.? This effort shows up in the total score of 2472 which is much improved over last year of about 1600.

Unfortunately, we failed?to keep a sign-in sheet for all of the participants that helped with the setup, teardown, and operation.? The following list is from memory so if I have failed to mention someone please let me know and, after offering a full apology for missing you as a participant, I will sign you up to keep track of the list of participants next year.? Regardless of whether you are on the list or not, I would like to thank everyone who participated and helped out with the operation.

Field Day Operators and participants:

Lisa Johnson K7NSP

Al White W7KHD

Bob Edgar AG7FR

Jeff Eastburn KJ7IRV

Dale Severns KJ7RGW

Jim English WO7V

David Bell N2RSN

Chuck Huckabay KJ7KWR

Dennie Dunkinsun WA7YPR

Jimmy Huckabay KC7WJ

Charles Boening K7AKT

Kevin Joo KJ7LLE

Eric Munson W6HIH

Sydney Fowler KB7GAB

Brandon Fowler AE7BF

For the second year in a row Lisa Johnson, K7NSP was our safety officer.??

With the addition of a pair of "egg beater" antennas for the club trailer, this year we tried very hard to complete at least one QSO by using a Satellite.? ?After a lot of work, we were able to hear a couple but were never able to actually complete a QSO.? Oh well, we learned a lot and there is always next year.?

Some of the notable QSOs were some DX in New Zealand.? We also worked at the ARRL headquarters station W1AW on CW.?

Another thing different this year is that there were actually 2 active operating positions in the club trailer.? The night shift composed of Jeff, Bobby, and Dale was running FT8 on both of them on 80M and 40M.? In the morning we switched to run on 40m and 20m.? As much as you might think of 20m as being the money band most of the Q's were completed on 40m.

The FT8 mode is very easy to operate, but you have to pay attention to what is going on.? That being said it is entirely possible for a single operator to run two radios on two bands simultaneously.? In fact, this is exactly what was being done for the last 12 hours of the operation.

The setup on Friday was a little disappointing due to the poor performance of the R-7 antenna on the tower.? Early Saturday morning it was determined that the coax feed on the tower was bad.? ?We will be replacing both of these in the near future.?

So for those of you that would like to see a little more detail the following is the summary sheet by the field day entry submission to the ARRL.

Field day egg beater antennas

Hello everybody,

Field day this year will be held at the Klamath?Falls Airport in?the?same location as last year.? Setup is late afternoon on?this Friday June 25th.? Operations begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday June 26th and extend to Sunday June 27th.? A pot luck picnic will follow and everybody is welcome.? We are in need of CW operators but any ham regardless of class that wants to put their butt in a chair and operate any mode is welcome.??

In preparation for field day we decided to add some satellite antennas to the club trailer.? We purchased a set from M squared and mounted them on the tower.? The bicycle chain and sprockets?keep them in the proper orientation?regardless of whether the tower is up or down.? Here are a couple pics:

I wasn't there but I know that the USB dongle, in many cases, can be stored in the mouse for safe keeping.? Just wanted to throw it out as an idea.
