Subject: [k-bar-a] The Local 10m Tech net

?

Hello Everybody,

?

When I was living in the Portland?area about 10 years ago one of the local hams held a weekly net on 10 meters.? The main purpose was to encourage the local hams that held a Tech license to get on HF.? Did you know that it is legal for a person holding a Technician class license to operate on 10 meters using? the SSB phone mode between 28.3MHz and 28.5MHz?? The discussions were mainly technical?related to some aspect of the ham radio hobby; mostly with information for persons?wanting to upgrade to General.? I was a regular participant and even though I didn't need to upgrade I found the discussions quite interesting.??

?

I was wondering if there is any interest in starting a similar net here in the Klamath Falls area?? I was thinking 8 pm local time on Mondays but am open to suggestions.

Great idea. This will encourage those who have a Tech license to utilize it's full potential or, possibly upgrade. Being local, a vertical would be more advantageous but, my 3 elem yagi would work. Just a little over kill, hi, hi.

Just what I need.? Another reason to purchase an HF rig.? :)?

I'm game for it though.? The biggest struggle may be interest.? Do we have a user base to support it?? I would think the Portland user base was much larger but maybe we can pull a bit from outlying areas?

I'd give it a try and I'll go out and learn how to turn the radio on again and find 10m.

Was there a meeting tonight to talk about this. I don't have a zoom link or email stating where to meet.?

Crater Rim Run (K-BAR-A Trailer) Repeater on the air.

For those of you planning on volunteering for this year's Crater Lake Rim Run event it is time to program and test your radios.? For the event the trailer will be located at the turn-around atop the cloud cap lookout.? From cloud cap the trailer repeater will cover most of the park.? So to get ready for the event please program your radios.? The trailer repeater operates on VHF at 147.32MHz with a 118.8Hz tone.? For the next two weeks until the early morning of August 14th it will be turned on and activated at it's temporary location at my QTH on Wiard Street.? Thus most anyone in the local area should be able to use it to test the programming on their radios.? Currently it has a very short squelch tail so with my cheap Baofeng I could not tell if I could hit it but it was working.? I will try to lengthen the squelch tail a bit.

We will also have an APRS digipeater running in the trailer so feel free to bring your APRS tracker.? In fact, I would encourage it.

Lastly, this reflector only has about 40 members so far.? Thus, this announcement may not get to everyone so if you know anyone that should have received?it please forward this information and encourage them to actually join this reflector by sending me an email to WO7V@... and I will send them an invite to join.

Ham gear for sale

Heads for you all, Tim KC7OCZ plans to be selling some ham radio gear at the Keno Community Yard Sale on Friday and Saturday, July 30-31. He says he has the following, among other things-
Icom 746
Yaesu FT-2600M
Hamm series 2 rotator
antennas

You can go see his sale in Keno or try calling or messaging him at 541- two eight one, 52 five one.

Pardon my lame attempt at concealing his number from evil bots!

Communications volunteers for the Bootleg Fire incident #ARES-EmComm

Well I definitely learn something new every day. After the decommissioning of the local CAP organization, this is something I didn't realize they did within their organization.

October 16th. SwapToberfest. Rickereall, Oregon.

Hello Everybody,

Pandemic got you down?? Are you all itching for that good old ham radio swap meet?? ?Well it looks like the Mid Valley Amateur Radio club in Salem has decided to go ahead with Swaptoberfest this fall on Saturday, October?16 in Rickreall Oregon.? Rickreall is just a few miles west of Salem on highway 22.? I expect it to be very crowded this fall because of the pent up?demand from the pandemic.? As with any other ham activity, if you get there on time you will be late!

It is a fun time for all. One thing is paramount. The 13 mile mark is pivotal. This is where the 13 mile runners finish and the marathon runners continue on for 26.5 miles total. Keeping track of who stops at the 13 mile finish and, who continues on is important. Some marathon runners can't continue and will stop at this point. They need to listed as stopping at the 13 mile point and not continuing. Beyond the 13 mile mark each station needs to look at the runners for fatigue, limping or running exceptionally slow. In the past we've had a few runners collapse in between stations. That's why reporting the runners numbers passing your station is very important. Help needs to get to the runners as quickly as possible, This run is not for the faint of heart. I did the communications at several points for the run about 10 or more times in the past. Some new marathon runners thought they could handle it and ended up stopping at the 13 mile mark. It happens. Also make sure you carry plenty of extra water. Some stations are not well equipped and with the hams having the water and possibly extra paper cups really helps. This has been improving. Usually every station will have two flavors of gator aid and water to dispense to the runners as they pass by. The runners will throw the cups down a shorty distance past the station. Many station operators have kids with them and they pick up the used cups. You get to meet new people at the stations and after the race many runners will thank you for being there. I'd love to help once again but, The only station I;d feel comfortable at is the 13 mile point.

Things are mostly over by 1 pm or 2. It’s normally cooler up there, but maybe not so this year.

We need all the help that we can get, and it would be good if we get a surplus of people.

There is always the option of riding up and back with someone else.
