Re: Need advice on HV connectors

Kim Herron

My reply posts are taking a while to get to the list.? The moderators are delaying them, as well they should.? I'm still an unknown quantity.
?
HV is nothing to fool with.? It usually doesn't give you a second chance.??
?
I like those Alden connectors.? That's sorta what I had in mind.? I need to find a source (sources) for them.? They look very similar to the connectors another member here posted from Amazon.?
?
John Goller K9UWA suggested that I subscribe to this reflector.? He also had a very close call with a Millen HV connector that got him.? I do not want a repeat of either of those experiences.? I'm also not an amp builder, though I've worked on my share of them.? Right now, I have Kenwood TL-922 (that's a toy, I know), a Dentron DTR-2000, a Collins 30S1, and this homebrew I bought from Jacks estate.?
?
This amp and power supply has two purposes for me.? First is to use this amp as Jack built it on 160.? The other is to use the power supply as a basis to test amp tubes.? These two pieces together are about the size of a Henry 4K.? The power supply has a 240 volt variac installed in it
and he's got a 240 volt 2 pole Square D 20 amp breaker assy for an on/off switch.? No documents though.? So I'm working on the docs and the cable to get the thing back together and in one piece. The power supply for this thing is about the size of a 4K or a Collins 30S1.?
?
I digress here a minute.? I got real lucky when I was in tech school.?? Went to RETS electronics for broadcast engineering.? We were working on color TV sets and the school had OLD RCA CTC100's with metal anode tubes (1971). They were supposed to have rubber shields on the tubes. IIRC those sets ran at 30KV and were capable of delivering a bunch of current. ? I didn't know any better and the set I was working on was missing the shield.? I leaned on that CRT with the set running, while making convergence adjustments.? I found myself in a pile at the base of the concrete wall where the set had tossed me.? The instructor thought I was dead.? I swore right then and there I wasn't working on TV.? SO, I get real anal about HV. ?
?
Two things that RETS taught me.? One, there is never too much information.? When you ask a question, the more info you have the less likely you are to make an error or a poor decision.?? Two, there is no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb mistakes.? When you are working with HV, there is no room for error or mistakes.? That will get you DEAD!
