No VM IPL with V1.R1.1 #VMCE

I have Hercules 3.13
Running VM 6 pack vm370sixpack1_3 - All is good

Running V1.R1.1 using the included vm370ce.sh - I see the IPL 6A1 but none of the other VM messages. It appears VM does not IPL. The log doesn't offer any clues.
I would appreciate any pointers.

Could you show us what you do get in the?log? The complete log, please. We can afford the space. :-)

I can post a log of a successful run as well if useful for comparison, but it basically contains VM IPL, Operator login, autolog1 login etc.

I reproduced the symptoms. Change ARCHLVL in the configuration file (vm370ce.conf)

Excellent. All appears to be resolved. I will better understand these options now. I take it this is a known issue which I didn't stumble across?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Correct.? The configuration name changed during the transition from Hercules 3.x and the newer SDL Hercules 4.x version.

I use the Meld diff utility to see the changes from one release of VM to another. For windows, try Winmerge instead.

I am always keen to improve things through feedback, but am I to take it that R1.V1.1 is only aimed at, and tested with Hercules 4.x ?
On Mac installing Hercules 3.x is super easy, so that is the route I tooken.

Ant,

I'm not sure how many of the maintainers are using version 4, but many maintainers and users are still using version 3 for the same reason as you are, it is easy to install.

Due to my current lack of time, I've been waiting for a concise and nearly bullet proof set of installation docs/procedures for Linux before I attempt an install of version 4.

I don't know why maintainers of packages are so bad at updating Hercules
to version 4.

For macports, I added a comment, urging to do an update, to
. Maybe a separate ticket is
required to get some attention there.

Homebrew (which I don't use) is no better apparently.

Pkgsrc on MacOS does carry Hercules 4 (SDL) (thanks to yours truely).
See .
For version 4.3, I personally verified that it builds and runs on my
MacBook, but since it is for $WORK, I can't really use it to keep
checking.

Building Hercules from pkgsrc is easy (just follow the pkgsrc bootstrap
procedure at and do "make install" in
pkgsrc/emulators/hercules4sdl). But it does take a while, since it will
build all dependencies from source in pkgsrc context, even those you
might have already. And if you just want Hercules, that will also take
relatively much space for just the one package.

Because OFFICIALLY, there is no released version of Hercules version 4.? ALL ?versions of hercules version 4 are beta only. The package maintainers are correct not to update until there is an OFFICIAL release of hercules v4.

Eh? Since when are official releases of Hercules v4 only beta releases? What constitutes an "official" release?

Fish,

It probably has something to do with the flow, or the lack thereof, of SDL Hercules V4 into various Linux distributions, such as Arch, or Fedora, or even Ubuntu. I'm not saying a person can not acquire and install it on these distros. I have, and so have others, but you can't just issue the distribution's install command, and get V4.? For instance, for Fedora, this is what I see available, for all hercules.

There is a difference between the V3 and the V4 distributions of Hercules. Two different groups of develops, two different ideologies, two different implementations,

I would offer that V3.13 is stable, as I have not seen any new releases since 2017 (see below), however, they manage to keep a copy always available in at lease the Fedora development stream.

I would, also offer, that V4 is VERY active, with additions and changes, and fixes. This group, take a real pride in advancing the code to be usable for numerous IBM Operating Systems, What I haven't see, maybe because I am looking in the wrong place, is a quick install in a Linux Distribution of V4, as a .tgz, or .rpm. or deb, or whatever, which is visible to the new/curious user of Hercules and all that runs on it.

Mark,

I suspect that the Linux distributors are not aware of Hercules V4.
Perhaps the Hercules developers should point the Linux distributors in
the right direction. They will then test and package Hercules V4 up.

I suspect that there are a number of distributors who need to be pointed
in our direction.

Fish,

I know enough about RPMs to get myself in lots of trouble, so I will point you to some online help. From my experience, a part of the team developing a package, builds and tests the RPMs.

Another point, is that it is up to the developers to bring their wonderful solutions to the attentions of the Distribution Team. They have enough to do without looking for more work. :-)

And it has a pointer to getting your RPMs into the repository

Mark,

As you hinted, it gets quite complicated. Different distributions have
different package methods - RPM is primarily Red Hat based. Debian &
Ubuntu have a different method. As for Slackware, OpenSuse etc, who
knows:-).

Some distributions do have strict controls on the packages legalities
etc..
