The ONLY reason for using Hercules 3.x is because you heard about it, and can find it in the Fedora/Red Hat/.../[A-Z*]Ubuntu/... and other distributions list of available products, and have not yet found about the superior Hercules 4.

The problem with Hercules 3 and VM/370 CE is the use of VM Assists, also called EPCS:VM (did I get that in the right order?) Herc 3 does not support those, so you would need to turn them off in the configuration file. It is highly unlikely that Hercules 3 will ever have this fixed.
