Greetings, ? Does anyone in our group have an airbrush setup and know how to use it ? I am in the process of selecting colors for our RV4 and I need someone to paint some sample coupons for me.

Hi Mark,
I have this simple setup I've used for quite a few small area jobs (e.g., hobbies, models).
If you have liqiud samples, this allows a simple filling of a glass bottle to enable spraying it with the propellant which entrains the paint up through a small 'straw' of the sample bottle to the tiny spray gun nozzle.

Dave, ? Do you have to reduce the paint before spraying it ? Can it spray any type of paint ??

Good morning, Mark,
Thinner is always better for these small pick-up tube air-type guns.? Acrylic enamel is common for car paint.? It is very thin...as thin as, possibly thinner (viscosity-wise) than water.
While I haven't painted a plane (yet?), I see that Polyurethane (PU) is common -- no experience with how thick that is or what is used to thin it, however.
I also have two can-type air guns if you want to give them a whirl with a small compressor. Dave

I have about a dozen spray guns for various?uses. Maybe more. You're welcome to use any of them or I can paint your coupons if David isn't available.
I would not use an airbrush. The nozzle is too small to get good coverage and it won't lay down the paint the same as a bigger gun. If there is any metallic flake in the paint the airbrush may not even spray it. The TDS for your paint system will give a recommended nozzle size (1.3, 1.4, 1.8 or whatever).
The gravity fed guns don't waste much paint (whatever sticks to the sides). If you're using a 2k paint you have to throw out whatever you catalyze regardless.
You probably know this already but be sure to prep your coupons the same as you would the RV4 for final paint. Scuff, alodine, primer, whatever you plan on doing. Then follow the same paint schedule as in the TDS (coats, drying times, wet mils, etc). The base has a quite big effect especially on some of the less opaque colors (reds, oranges, yellows, even some whites). I'd also put a very slight bend in the coupons. There are rarely truly flat surfaces on a plane and a flat coupon can look different than a curved one,?especially with metallics. If only. I'm just too cheap to pay someone when I can spend 10x the time, almost the same money, and learn to do it myself. This was the last thing I painted. Epoxy primer, spray filler (Evercoat product of some sort), gazillion hours sanding, surfacer, base, clear. Never really took any good pics of it before I sold?it unfortunately. Even did the engine, engine bay and interior. Switched it over to EFI and a 5 speed after spending way too long trying to fix?a?flawed?holley clone. These are all during the build and before I tweaked fitments and waxed it. I wanted to put a turbo on it but sold it before that happened.
