looking for resources regarding community building in online and onsite community settings such as work, education, religion

Greetings, Friends!
I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction toward resources and conversations around hybrid communities and sustaining them. More specifically, it seems that workplaces, educational settings, and religious worship settings will be exploring in more depth how to create, maintain, further develop community in situations in which some of their members will be gathered together onsite, and others online. I am researching different models, and I am particularly interested in how opportunities for community and relationship building can be embedded into these models. For example, one model that I am aware of that exists is referred to as hybrid classroom or hyflex, in which students can choose to be onsite in a physical classroom or zoom in to it and participate online synchronously. There are other models where students or workers learn or work together or collaborate asynchronously.??? I am wondering what kind of research and practice is being done with a community lens for these types of models. How can we best facilitate community? And I apologize if I am not as articulate as I would like to be... : ) I am still trying to figure out the language around this and am open to hearing more! Many thanks in advance for any ideas you may have! Warm regards, Caren Caren Levine |
Caren: Just to help level set what resources have you discovered so far that you have found valuable? Sean Murphy 408-252-9676 On Mon, Jul 6, 2020 at 10:26 AM Caren Levine <jlearn20@...> wrote: Greetings, Friends! |
Hi Caren - this is a great inquiry that I've been doing a lot of work around for the last 10 years.? There is a huge territory around how to create more structured communities of practice and communities that somehow engage in learning and knowledge building together.? I'm one of the founders behind Sutra.co and this has been the kind of work we've been developing around since 2015.? We've worked with communities out of Harvard, UNICEF, and even Burning Man.? Happy to share what we've learned if you're interested.? Just email me: lorenz@....

Hi Caren
I'm exploring the idea of commons, and commonspace, as a way to frame the sort of hybrid communities you describe ... and in particular how the use of online tools for neighbourhood mutual aid has introduced a lot more people to the potential. So - how do we help develop commonspace for conversation, collaboration etc using a blend of methods and facilitation? I recently came across the idea of Community of Inquiry (CoI) "as any group of individuals involved in a process of empirical or conceptual??into problematic situations.?"??More here??on how this has worked in practice in various situations.?? ? I'm looking at the possible use of??the platform that Lorenz has developed. (I'll get back to you shortly Lorenz:-). Sutra works on sets of interlocking circles for discussion and resources that I think could be ideal for a CoI, where people may pursue different strands of inquiry within a common framework. So the answer to "How can we best facilitate (hybrid) community?" might be set up a community of inquiry ... or rather circles of inquiry. Here's an example of Sutra used with other tools??... I'm sure Lorenz can explain the better. I should say I don't have any affiliation. David |
